Human-AI Agent Interaction in a Business Context

Abstract

As AI agents are increasingly integrated into core business processes, understanding and designing effective interaction patterns between humans and AI agents becomes crucial for value creation. This study identifies and evaluates principles and criteria for a positive User Experience (UX) with AI agents, along with methods for its measurement. We identify user expectations and needs to facilitate adoption, build trust, and support user-centered decision-making by development teams. Using a mixed-methods approach that combines qualitative and quantitative techniques, we explore interaction patterns between humans and AI agents. The findings from this exploratory research serve as the basis to develop a survey experiment which evaluates the effectiveness of specific design elements on a larger scale. This foundational research contributes to the development of more intuitive and effective human-AI agent interactions in business settings.

A Framework of User Experience Principles for Human-AI Agent Interaction in the Workplace

As AI agents become integral to business workflows, establishing guiding user experience (UX) principles is crucial for ensuring user trust and successful adoption. To address this, our study uses a multi-method approach - combining participatory design workshop, paper-and-pencil, expert review, meta-analysis, and in-depth interviews - to identify and validate a design framework of eight core UX principles for human-AI agent interaction in the workplace. Together with their underlying criteria, these principles provide actionable guardrails for designers and software engineers, creating a foundation for developing effective and human-centered AI agent interactions. This study contributes to a structured foundation for future empirical studies on agentic AI in enterprise settings.

Design Principles for Human-Agent Interaction

AI agents are rapidly evolving into autonomous systems capable of sustained interaction, tool use, and long-term collaboration. Yet their real-world adoption remains limited, suggesting that the key barrier lies not only in technical capability but also in a lack of design knowledge for successful human-agent interaction. This position paper argues that AI agents should not be solely evaluated or deployed based on autonomous task capability alone; because agents interact with, adapt to, influence, and sometimes fail humans, human-agent interaction must be treated as a core design and evaluation target for agentic AI. We present 14 design principles that articulate the ideal human-agent relationship across four interaction stages: initially, during interaction, over time, and when things go wrong. We use these principles to evaluate nine agent systems to illustrate that these design principles can provide actionable guidance for AI design teams to systematically design and evaluate agents that are usable, trustworthy, and effective in real-world interactive settings.

Imperfectly Cooperative Human-AI Interactions: Comparing the Impacts of Human and AI Attributes in Simulated and User Studies

AI design characteristics and human personality traits each impact the quality and outcomes of human-AI interactions. However, their relative and joint impacts are underexplored in imperfectly cooperative scenarios, where people and AI only have partially aligned goals and objectives. This study compares a purely simulated dataset comprising 2,000 simulations and a parallel human subjects experiment involving 290 human participants to investigate these effects across two scenario categories: (1) hiring negotiations between human job candidates and AI hiring agents; and (2) human-AI transactions wherein AI agents may conceal information to maximize internal goals. We examine user Extraversion and Agreeableness alongside AI design characteristics, including Adaptability, Expertise, and chain-of-thought Transparency. Our causal discovery analysis extends performance-focused evaluations by integrating scenario-based outcomes, communication analysis, and questionnaire measures. Results reveal divergences between purely simulated and human study datasets, and between scenario types. In simulation experiments, personality traits and AI attributes were comparatively influential. Yet, with actual human subjects, AI attributes -- particularly transparency -- were much more impactful. We discuss how these divergences vary across different interaction contexts, offering crucial insights for the future of human-centered AI agents.
