AI-Driven Synthesis for High-Tech System Design: Automating Innovation

Authors: Luuk OerlemansSteven WesterhofTheo Hofman

Abstract

This article addresses the combinatorial complexity inherent in modern high-tech system design by presenting automation-in-design (AiD) as a transformative paradigm. We propose computational design synthesis (CDS), a framework utilising deep learning and generative AI to automate the creation of novel systems. Two case studies (e-drive system design and spatial dimensioning problem) serve as proof-points for this approach. The AI-driven methods used in the case studies represent a fundamental shift in engineering, advancing from simulation-based optimisation towards autonomous design with minimal human supervision.

Enhancing Creativity in 3D Generative Design via a TRIZ-Inspired Text-to-CAD Framework

Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated significant potential in supporting engineering design tasks, including computer-aided design (CAD) automation. However, most existing LLM-based 3D CAD generation approaches primarily focus on geometric precision and instruction-following performance, often overlooking the fundamental aspect of creative design exploration. This study presents a TRIZ-inspired text-to-CAD framework that leverages LLMs to generate high-quality, editable CAD models while systematically exploring creative design alternatives. The framework integrates the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ)-embedding deep human insights from extensive patent records-into LLM prompting strategies, enabling autonomous generation of innovative CAD variants that address technical contradictions. Through a comprehensive three-stage pipeline of design generation, enhancement, and optimization, the framework produces structurally diverse CAD models from well-crafted prompts. The present study implements and evaluates the first two stages, while positioning the design optimization stage as future work. A product design case study (chair) demonstrates that the TRIZ-inspired text-to-CAD framework generates multiple creative design alternatives by systematically applying TRIZ inventive principles such as segmentation, anti-weight, dynamics, and composite materials, achieving 4.0-14.7% mass reduction across all enhanced designs while maintaining structural integrity. The key findings suggest that integrating systematic innovation methodologies with LLM-based 3D CAD generation bridges the gap between precision-focused synthesis and creativity-focused exploration, advancing toward autonomous design systems where AI makes design decisions independently, supporting human decision-making in human-AI collaborative design for engineering applications.

AutoDesign: Meta-Harness Optimization for Long-Horizon Agentic Design

Transforming multimodal sources into condensed and structured media outputs can be fundamentally conceptualized as a long-horizon agentic process centered on a model-harness system. While an ideal harness system should align with human design priors and accumulate reusable experience through empirical exploration to drive recursive self-improvement, existing paradigms remain static and fall short of this capability. In this paper, we present AutoDesign, a framework that aligns with human design priors, where a meta-harness optimizer guides a code agent to recursively improve harness based on rollout feedback. To instantiate and evaluate this framework, we focus on the academic paper-to-poster generation task and introduce PosterBench, comprising a 100-paper Main Track spanning five disciplines and PosterBench-mini, a shared 10-paper subset for controlled evaluation. On the PosterBench Main Track, AutoDesign achieves the highest score of 78.32, surpassing the closed-source commercial system Claude Design by 7.45 points. Across seven controlled code-agent-model configurations, integrating the learned DesignHarness consistently improves performance, increasing the average PosterBench Score from 54.99 to 67.39 (+12.4%). In a fully autonomous long-horizon loop, it executes 253 tool calls and 11 editing turns within 40 minutes for under $3, reaching average conference-poster quality in human evaluation. A system-blind human study further demonstrates that AutoDesign achieves the highest human preference among evaluated systems.

A3D: Agentic AI flow for autonomous Accelerator Design

Accelerating applications through the design of hardware accelerators can significantly enhance system performance and energy efficiency. Despite advances, such as high-level synthesis (HLS), designing accelerators for complex applications still remains highly labor-intensive, demanding considerable expertise in understanding workloads to be accelerated, hardware design, micro-architecture, and EDA tool usage, posing challenges for application domain experts. Therefore, most accelerator solutions are limited to applications with a regular predictable dataflow. Advances in AI have enabled agents that perform autonomous planning, reasoning, execution and reflection, leading to unprecedented potential for automation through agentic AI. We present A3D, an Agentic AI flow for end-to-end Automation of hardware Accelerator Design. A3D automates workload analysis, performance bottleneck identification, code refactoring for HLS compatibility and micro-architecture generation. A3D also generates diverse accelerator designs by automatically exploring the speed-area tradeoff space. Recent efforts have explored the use of AI for specific tasks such as design space exploration in HLS, leaving several tasks to still be performed manually. A3D addresses the challenges in applying modern LLMs to accelerator design by judiciously partitioning tasks among specialist agents, orchestrating process loops with specialist and verifier agents, utilizing pre-existing and custom tools, and employing agentic RAG for codebase and proprietary EDA tool documentation exploration. Our implementation of A3D, using commercial components like Claude Sonnet 4.5 and the Catapult HLS tool, demonstrates its effectiveness by generating accelerator designs with no human intervention from complex scientific applications like LAMMPS (molecular dynamics simulation) and QMCPACK (quantum chemistry).
