Reachability Guarantees for Cart-Pole Swing-Up and Stabilization

Authors: Mohamed Khalid M Jaffar

Abstract

The cart-pole swing-up is a canonical benchmark for nonlinear control of underactuated systems, yet an end-to-end guarantee linking the global swing-up maneuver to the local stabilizer is seldom formalized. We present a reachability analysis of a switched energy-based/LQR controller that certifies convergence to the upright equilibrium from a compact set of initial conditions. The swing-up law is derived from an energy-error Lyapunov function; canceling the autonomous conservative term yields a strictly sign-definite Lyapunov derivative, and convergence follows from LaSalle's invariance principle. We also propose an augmented Lyapunov function to regulate the steady-state cart velocity to zero, for which we establish almost-global convergence. For the controller handoff, a switching region is designed to lie strictly within the LQR region of attraction, formally certifying the swing-up-to-stabilization transition. Numerical simulations corroborate the theoretical analysis.

Zero-shot Transfer of Reinforcement Learning Control Policies for the Swing-Up and Stabilization of a Cart-Pole System

Reinforcement learning (RL) is a powerful and convenient tool to modernize controller design. In this work, we study the zero-shot transfer of RL-based control policies from simulation to hardware for cart-pole swing-up and stabilization. The two policies are trained independently, and the handoff is implemented in Simulink via switching logic. We apply a first-order action smoothing filter to prevent hardware damage from high-frequency oscillatory actuation. Pairing this bandwidth-aware filtering with sensitivity-guided domain randomization (DR) and a simple linear curriculum learning (CL) schedule, we obtain a swing-up policy that in all of our experiments injects sufficient energy for handoff into the stabilizer's region of attraction. The stabilization policy rejects disturbances within the tested range, and the swing-up policy can re-engage after larger perturbations and restores the pendulum to the inverted position.

Real-Time Nonlinear MPC via Sequential Quadratic Programming with Structure-Exploiting ADMM and Interior-Point Methods for Underactuated Double-Pendulum Swing-Up

The 4th "AI Olympics with RealAIGym" competition, to be held at IJCAI-ECAI 2026 in Bremen, challenges participants to develop a global control policy for swinging up and stabilizing an underactuated two-link system in its upright position. In contrast to previous editions, participants develop and evaluate their control strategies directly on remotely accessible CloudPendulum hardware, with limited interaction time and without prior knowledge of the system's model parameters. This paper presents an optimal-control-based approach employing real-time nonlinear model predictive control implemented using sequential quadratic programming. The results demonstrate that the proposed SQP-based MPC controller achieves reliable swing-up and stabilization performance, while maintaining robustness against disturbances.

Learned Lyapunov Shielding for Adaptive Control

We augment the Slotine--Li adaptive controller for Euler--Lagrange systems with three learned components: a structured-quadratic Lyapunov function VψV_ψ whose positive-definiteness follows from a Cholesky parameterization, a residual Soft Actor--Critic policy that adds bounded torque corrections to the analytic baseline, and a physics-informed neural network that estimates unmodeled dynamics. A closed-form safety filter, derived from the single affine constraint V˙ψ+αVψ0\dot V_ψ+ αV_ψ\le 0, projects every policy output onto the safe set without requiring an online QP solver. We prove: global feasibility of the filter under a drift-decay condition on the control-degeneracy set; exponential stability under exact shielding, with a robust extension whose margin depends on the PINN approximation error; almost-sure convergence of the three-timescale policy--certificate--multiplier updates to a KKT point; and a PAC generalization bound for the certificate over compacts. On a 2-DOF manipulator with nonlinear friction and variable payload, the learned certificate accounts for most of the empirical gain: tracking error drops by 41% on nominal friction and 24% on aggressive friction at the centroid of the training distribution. A 7-DOF scalability study on a Franka Emika Panda confirms clean convergence of the full pipeline at industrial scale, identifies the conditions under which gains over exact model-based baselines should and should not be expected, and documents a warm-start pathology of the learned certificate that has practical implications for deployment.
