KrishokChat: A Citation-Grounded Dataset and Benchmark for Bengali Agricultural Advisory

Abstract

We present KrishokChat, the first citation-grounded Bengali agricultural instruction-tuning dataset for crop advisory in low-resource settings. We establish a foundation of 290 hierarchical Knowledge Nodes, extracting disease symptoms, management practices, chemical dosages, and verbatim citations from 129 domain-filtered agricultural manuals. Every training instance inherits a verified citation header, guaranteeing 100% citation provenance. Using a Partitioned Seed Generation Matrix, these nodes are expanded into 139,200 supervised fine-tuning pairs, and augmented with 5,300 chemical safety and 1,000 adversarial safety instances, yielding 145,500 QA pairs across 18 crop categories. To evaluate real-world performance, we introduce the Farmer Benchmark, comprising 1,001 authentic farmer queries curated from field surveys and digital portals. Empirical evaluation on Gemma-4-E2B reveals that while fine-tuning on KrishokChat vastly improves structured formatting, standalone models still struggle with exact chemical dosage generalization. This highlights the dataset's true value as a verified knowledge base for retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) rather than mere parametric memorization. Fine-Tuning General-Purpose Large Language Models for Agricultural Applications:A Reproducible Framework and Evaluation Protocol Based on Qwen3-8B

General-purpose large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated strong abilities in opendomain question answering, information extraction, and text generation. Agricultural applications, however, are domain-specific, region-dependent, time-sensitive, and safety-critical. Without data governance, expert evaluation, and evidence constraints, an agricultural assistant mayproduce unreliable advice on crop diseases, pesticide use, fertilization, or policy interpretation.To avoid presenting unverified simulated numbers as real experimental findings, this paper doesnot report any model-performance claims that have not been produced by an actual training runand expert evaluation. Instead, we propose AgriTune-R, a reproducible and auditable frameworkfor adapting general-purpose LLMs to agricultural tasks. The framework selects the publiclyverifiable Qwen3-8B model as the recommended base model and integrates agricultural datagovernance, instruction construction, LoRA/QLoRA parameter-efficient fine-tuning, retrievalaugmented generation, expert evaluation, and safety control for high-risk questions. The contributions are: (1) a structured workflow for agricultural LLM adaptation; (2) an evaluationprotocol for agricultural knowledge QA, pest and disease consultation, cultivation management,and policy explanation; (3) an expert-review rubric combining factuality, safety, evidence consistency, and uncertainty expression; and (4) a clear separation between protocol design andempirical conclusions, providing an executable baseline for future empirical studies.

PlantExpertVQA: A Visual Question Answering Dataset for Benchmarking Vision-Language Models in Plant Science

Existing plant-disease datasets target classification and detection, leaving vision-language models unable to support interactive, reasoning-based diagnosis. To address this, we present PlantExpertVQA, a large-scale visual question answering (VQA) dataset designed to advance vision-language models for agricultural decision-making. It is compiled from 45 open-source datasets, including the widely used PlantVillage corpus, and comprises 765,186 high-quality question-answer (QA) pairs grounded over 150,841 images spanning 38 crop species and 89 disease conditions. Questions are organized into 3 levels of cognitive complexity and 9 distinct categories. Each was phrased following expert guidance and generated via an automated two-stage pipeline: template-based QA synthesis from image metadata, followed by multi-stage linguistic re-engineering. The dataset was iteratively reviewed by domain experts for scientific accuracy and relevance. We find that current frontier vision-language models, including recent open-source instruction-tuned multimodal LLMs, perform poorly on PlantExpertVQA. However, parameter-efficient fine-tuning of a compact 2B-parameter model on a small fraction of the dataset yields substantial improvements across all question categories, demonstrating its effectiveness for domain adaptation.

Agri-CPJ: A Training-Free Explainable Framework for Agricultural Pest Diagnosis Using Caption-Prompt-Judge and LLM-as-a-Judge

Crop disease diagnosis from field photographs faces two recurring problems: models that score well on benchmarks frequently hallucinate species names, and when predictions are correct, the reasoning behind them is typically inaccessible to the practitioner. This paper describes Agri-CPJ (Caption-Prompt-Judge), a training-free few-shot framework in which a large vision-language model first generates a structured morphological caption, iteratively refined through multi-dimensional quality gating, before any diagnostic question is answered. Two candidate responses are then generated from complementary viewpoints, and an LLM judge selects the stronger one based on domain-specific criteria. Caption refinement is the component with the largest individual impact: ablations confirm that skipping it consistently degrades downstream accuracy across both models tested. On CDDMBench, pairing GPT-5-Nano with GPT-5-mini-generated captions yields \textbf{+22.7} pp in disease classification and \textbf{+19.5} points in QA score over no-caption baselines. Evaluated without modification on AgMMU-MCQs, GPT-5-Nano reached 77.84% and Qwen-VL-Chat reached 64.54%, placing them at or above most open-source models of comparable scale despite the format shift from open-ended to multiple-choice. The structured caption and judge rationale together constitute a readable audit trail: a practitioner who disagrees with a diagnosis can identify the specific caption observation that was incorrect.
