Abstract

An unreliable language model can be made to produce reliable physical designs if the authority to assert is moved out of the model: the model proposes, and a deterministic engine alone certifies, returning certified, impossible, or unknown. We introduce Physics-Anchored Certification (PHACT), a propose-certify loop spanning five scientific domains, and identify what makes such a certificate trustworthy. A checker that accepts a model-supplied value can be forged; deriving the certified quantity from fixed inputs instead makes forgery impossible by construction. Across eighty adversarial trials spanning two models, two decoding temperatures, and a deliberately faulted engine, this contract produced zero false certifications.

Physics as the label for measuring and correcting materials reasoning in multimodal models

Vision-language and language models increasingly interpret materials data, yet benchmarks report that they hallucinate invalid properties and violate physical law. Evaluation matches final answers to scarce human labels, while discovery agents verify final proposals or density functional theory (DFT) execution. Neither measures the physical consistency of a model's reasoning chain. Materials data carries its own physics, making a large class of materials reasoning verifiable without annotation. We introduce MatPCR, a label-free benchmark whose programmatic oracles check diffraction geometry through Bragg's law, scale bars, spectral peaks, and Materials Project-grounded checks of near-hull stability, computed band-gap class, and net magnetization. We define the Physical-Consistency Rate over image and structure inputs; introduce Constraint-Grounded Self-Verification, an agentic loop whose gain survives self-refinement and equal-compute re-prompting controls; release an open verifier useful in distribution but near chance on all six held-out constraint types; and derive an exact identity for how oracle error displaces the reported rate.

Testing Frontier Large Language Models' Physics Literacy in Parallel Physical Worlds

Current large-language-model (LLM) physics benchmarks are usually scored by answer accuracy, which cannot distinguish genuine reasoning from recall of familiar problem patterns and reveals little about where a model's reasoning breaks down. We introduce an auditable four-stage diagnostic that evaluates whether an LLM can reason inside an unfamiliar physics framework through induction, formulation, prediction, and review. The diagnostic combines locked pre-registrations, fresh sessions between stages, dual-LLM judging, and a human-audit pathway, and we apply it to three parallel physics worlds: a single-equation counterfactual world (F=mvF=mv), a historical framework (Aristotelian mechanics), and a four-domain counterfactual world (Decay World). Across Claude Opus 4.7, GPT-5.5, and Gemini 3.1 Pro, the three worlds yield composite PASS rates are 6/15, 6/15, and 0/15 respectively (content \land structural for F=mvF=mv and Aristotelian, content axis only for Decay World where the structural axis is out of scope). The most pointed empirical pattern is a qualitative-versus-quantitative asymmetry: in Decay World, models almost never predict the wrong direction of change, but frequently compute the wrong ratio by slipping back to standard-physics relations. The protocol also surfaces two methodology findings: LLM-judge reliability does not transfer across frameworks, and Stage 4 self-review is weak in every framework, with the model's own review wrongly reporting no earlier error in at least two-thirds of the trials that actually contained one. We release the full prompts, responses, verdicts, and audit records.

GeoCert: Certified Geometric AI for Reliable Forecasting

Forecasting systems in science must be accurate, physically consistent, and certifiably reliable. Most existing models address prediction, constraint enforcement, and verification separately, limiting scalability and interpretability. We introduce GeoCert, a geometric AI framework that unifies forecasting, physical reasoning, and formal verification within a single differentiable computation. GeoCert formulates forecasting as evolution along a hyperbolic manifold, where negative curvature induces contraction dynamics, intrinsic robustness, and logarithmic-time certification. A hierarchical constraint architecture separates universal physical laws from domain-specific dynamics, enabling certified generalization across energy, climate, finance, and transportation systems. GeoCert achieves state-of-the-art accuracy while reducing computational cost by 97.5% and maintaining better certification rates. By embedding verification into the geometry of learning, GeoCert transforms forecasting from empirical approximation to formally verified inference, offering a scalable foundation for trustworthy, reproducible, and physically grounded scientific AI.
