CoorGrasp: Coordinated Contact Control for Adaptive Dexterous Grasping Under Uncertainty

Authors: Mingrui YuYongpeng JiangYongyi JiaRen YiXiang Li

Abstract

While recent research has focused heavily on dexterous grasp pose generation, less attention has been devoted to the execution of planned grasps. Under shape and position uncertainty, open-loop execution often yields uncoordinated contacts, causing undesired in-hand object motion and even grasp failures. To address this, this paper proposes a tactile-driven model predictive controller for adaptive and delicate execution of diverse dexterous grasps. Our approach emphasizes multi-contact coordination across both approaching and grasping phases, with three key novelties: (i) coordination-aware phase separation, (ii) arm-hand coordination to compensate for position errors, and (iii) adaptive force coordination to increase contact forces in a balanced manner. An analytical model is employed to relate contact forces to robot joint motions for predictive control. Our formulation imposes no restrictions on grasp types or contact configurations and integrates seamlessly with state-of-the-art grasp pose generation methods. We validate the approach through large-scale simulations involving 15k grasps across 478 objects on three robotic hands, and real-world experiments on 8 objects. Results demonstrate that our method achieves higher grasp success rates and reduced undesired object movements.

AdaDexGrasp: Adaptive Dexterous Grasping via 3D Visuo-Tactile Representation Fusion

Humans achieve stable and adaptive grasps by seamlessly integrating visual perception and tactile feedback, a capability that remains challenging to replicate in robotic systems. Existing robotic grasping approaches predominantly rely on visual inputs and lack mechanisms for tactile-guided adaptation after contact, limiting robustness and generalization. To address this challenge, we propose a unified visuo-tactile-fusion grasping framework that integrates grasp generation, feasibility prediction, and adaptive refinement. At its core, our method introduces an efficient visuo-tactile representation that tightly fuses object geometry with tactile feedback by associating tactile signals with finger identities. This unified representation supports contact-aware grasp pose generation during planning and tactile-guided refinement after contact, enabling the system to reason about fine-grained finger-object interactions and adjust grasps dynamically. Comprehensive experiments in both simulation and real-world environments demonstrate that our approach significantly enhances grasp success rates and generalization across diverse objects.

Control Architecture for Safe Grasping of Fragile Objects Using a Coarse Position-Controlled Gripper

Robots are increasingly used in unstructured environments. The need for them to safely grasp unknown objects without damaging them becomes crucial. Humans achieve this by sensing and quickly responding by adjusting their grasping force. Similarly, effective grasp acquisition in robots requires compliant interaction strategies that can adapt to uncertain object properties and adjust to any instabilities during manipulation. We present a geometry-aware force/torque-based contact estimation method for a coarse position-controlled gripper, combined with an adaptive admittance controller for safe grasp acquisition. The desired contact forces are estimated online to keep stable contact with objects of unknown properties. This enables compliant and stable grasps while avoiding excessive forces. Experiments with objects of different sizes, shapes, stiffnesses, and weights show that the proposed algorithm not only prevents slippage but also applies minimal force to safely grasp an object without causing excessive deformation.

SECOND-Grasp: Semantic Contact-guided Dexterous Grasping

Achieving reliable robotic manipulation, such as dexterous grasping, requires a synergy between physically stable interactions and semantic task guidance, yet these objectives are often treated as separate, disjoint goals. In this paper, we investigate how to integrate dexterous grasping techniques, i.e., physically stable grasps for object lifting and language-guided grasp generation, to achieve both physical stability and semantic understanding. To this end, we propose SECOND-Grasp (SEmantic CONtact-guided Dexterous Grasping), a unified framework that enables robotic hands to dynamically adjust grasping strategies based on semantic reasoning while ensuring physical feasibility. We begin by obtaining coarse contact proposals through vision-language reasoning to infer where contacts should occur based on object properties, followed by segmentation to localize these regions across views. To further ensure consistency across multiple viewpoints, we introduce Semantic-Geometric Consistency Refinement (SGCR), which refines initial contact predictions by enforcing semantic consistency across views and removing geometrically invalid regions, yielding reliable 3D contact maps. Then, we derive a feasible hand pose for each contact map via inverse kinematics, generating a supervision signal for policy learning. Our approach, trained on DexGraspNet, consistently outperforms baselines in lifting success rate on both seen and unseen categories, achieving 98.2% and 97.7%, respectively, while also improving intent-aware grasping by 12.8% and 26.2%. We further show promising results on additional datasets and robotic hands, including Shadow Hand and Allegro Hand.
