Abstract

Most cooperative Vision-Language Navigation (VLN) methods assume unlimited communication, not considering real-world applications where bandwidth is restricted and information efficiency is critical. We introduce \textbf{bandwidth-constrained cooperative VLN} and propose \textbf{hindsight gating}: a lightweight supervised gate that labels communication-critical steps post-hoc from navigation failures, avoiding the high variance of REINFORCE. Contrary to the intuition that agents should communicate when uncertain, we observe a consistent counter-intuitive pattern: trained gates fire predominantly in early episode steps and more often when agents are confident, across all budget levels (B{1,3,5}B \in \{1,3,5\}). We explain this through \textbf{recurrent hidden-state alignment}: early communication injects grounded trajectory representations that persist and compound through subsequent Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) updates, achieving +0.072+0.072 cumulative alignment gain with B=3B{=}3 transmissions, approaching unconstrained communication (+0.078+0.078) at 260% greater alignment efficiency than random gating (+0.020+0.020) and 320% greater efficiency than entropy-based gating (+0.017+0.017). Our results establish a new communication regime for bandwidth-limited embodied agents: synchronise representations early, navigate independently later. ReflectVLN: Training Vision-Language Navigation Agents with Reflective Reasoning

Existing vision-language navigation methods often couple a VLM with waypoint decoders to produce multi-step action plans, but they typically lack an explicit closed-loop mechanism for tracking semantic progress, diagnosing execution failures, and recovering from error accumulation in long-horizon navigation. To address this gap, we propose ReflectVLN, an agentic VLN framework that organizes decision-making through bidirectionally interactive intention and execution agents. The intention agent performs subtask decomposition and reflection, generating executable subtask descriptions as corrective plans. Conditioned on these descriptions, the execution agent grounds them into short-horizon actions under current observations while monitoring sub-goal progress and detecting off-track behavior. Crucially, ReflectVLN enables closed-loop bidirectional communication: the execution agent emits progress and deviation signals to trigger reflection and subtask updates on demand, and the intention agent returns structured guidance that reconditions subsequent actions for recovery. To encourage temporally coherent decisions with interpretable intermediate rationales, we introduce Action Chain-of-Thought (Action-CoT), a path-conditioned dual-query training scheme for action generation. Experiments on standard VLN benchmarks show that ReflectVLN improves success rates and path efficiency under a constrained data budget, with favorable training cost and fewer high-level intention calls at inference time, while providing interpretable intermediate decisions for analysis and collaboration. Air-Ground Collaborative Vision-and-Language Navigation via Shared Bird's-Eye Maps

Air-ground collaborative Vision-and-Language Navigation (VLN) pairs an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a global bird's-eye view and an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) with a local first-person view, yet the setting remains largely unexplored: existing training-free methods solve single-agent tasks but offer no collaboration mechanism, and a recent CARLA-Air evaluation found no stable cooperative behavior across five state-of-the-art VLA models; naive semantic communication or bidirectional coupling even degrades performance. We establish AGC-VLN (Air-Ground Collaborative VLN), the first training-free baseline for air-ground collaborative VLN. The key insight is that training-free methods decompose navigation into VLM-based semantic reasoning and deterministic geometric execution, exposing a collaboration interface: the UAV's global view, over which it renders the UGV's reported pose and the VLM-anchored target as CAR/GOAL markers with distance labels, yielding a shared bird's-eye map. From this map, the UGV acquires global spatial context its first-person view cannot provide, plans a road-following path with a frozen VLM, and executes it under closed-loop control; in parallel, the UAV runs 3D-SPF, a spatial-search upgrade of SPF that localizes the target in the downward view and flies toward it. On 100 closed-loop episodes in CARLA-Air's Town10HD scene, AGC-VLN reaches a 77.0% joint success rate, a collaboration gain of +27.0% over the weaker individual agent (the UAV, 50.0%), and exceeds the strongest published single-agent baseline (Travel UAV, 53.0%) by 24.0 points, stemming from the complementarity of the UAV's global view and the UGV's road-following execution. Efficient-VLN: A Simple yet Strong Baseline for Efficient Vision-Language Navigation

While Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have demonstrated significant promise in Vision-Language Navigation (VLN), existing agents remain heavily constrained by systemic bottlenecks across inference, training, and data collection. Specifically, they suffer from prohibitive latency due to visual history reprocessing, action leakage during sequence-packed training, and suboptimal exploration in self-correction data collection. To overcome these intertwined challenges, we present Efficient-VLN, a highly efficient and robust baseline that systematically resolves these issues through three simple-yet-effective mechanisms. (1) Inference: We introduce KV-cache reuse with contiguous RoPE, enabling the model to process only the newly observed frame at each step for real-time inference. (2) Training: We propose packed training with an action-isolating mask to accelerate throughput while effectively bridging the training-inference gap by preventing action leakage. (3) Data Collection: We employ an Adaptive DAgger to dynamically balance autonomous exploration and oracle guidance, enhancing error-recovery capability without escalating computational costs. Extensive evaluations show that Efficient-VLN significantly advances the state-of-the-art across the R2R-CE (73.2% SR) and RxR-CE (75.6% SR) benchmarks. Meanwhile, it yields a 28% latency reduction compared to the previous state-of-the-art StreamVLN, establishing a new paradigm for streaming MLLM-based navigation.
