The First ChineseBabyLM Challenge: training data-efficient and cognitively plausible language models for Chinese

Abstract

This paper describes the first ChineseBabyLM challenge, which will be held in the 2026 NLPCC conference. The challenge calls for researchers to train language models from scratch with 100 million Chinese tokens and evaluates the models on 3 tracks of tasks: NLU, cognitive alignment and Hanzi knowledge. There is no restriction on tokenizer, model architecture and the number of training epochs. Details of the challenge can be found in https://chinese-babylm.github.io/.

Child-directed speech facilitates production, not comprehension, in BabyLMs

Recent studies suggest that child-directed speech is not conducive to language learning in BabyLMs. However, current evaluations focus predominantly on comprehension and not production, which is central to usage-based theories of language acquisition which argue how CDS facilitates early language use through constructional ''frames'' (frequent lexical patterns with open slots). We introduce a novel generation-based evaluation inspired by such theories in form of a frame-completion task, and compare Llama models trained with CDS, the BabyLM corpus, and web-crawl data (FineWeb-edu) on comprehension benchmarks and our novel framework. Our results reveal a clear dissociation between models' comprehension and production capabilities: while FineWeb-trained models excel at minimal pairs, CDS-trained models produce grammatical completions substantially earlier in training and concentrate probability mass on appropriate slot-fillers. These findings show that comprehension benchmarks underestimate what CDS affords to BabyLMs.

Subword Segmental BabyLMs: Learning to Tokenise for Sample-Efficient Pretraining

In the standard LM training pipeline, subword tokenisation is applied as a preprocessing step. Subword segmental language modelling is an alternative paradigm in which tokenisation is learned during training, allowing the model to discover subword units that optimise its training objective. In this paper, we present our submission to the 2026 BabyLM Challenge, for which we develop two new subword segmental LMs: SubSegGPT and SubSegDeBERTa. SubSegGPT is a decoder-only model that learns tokenisation during autoregressive pretraining. SubSegDeBERTa is an encoder-based model that jointly learns to generate and tokenise masked words. We train both for the Strict and Strict-small tracks. Our top submission to Strict is SubSegDeBERTa, which achieves notable gains in zero-shot evaluation. Our top submission to Strict-small is SubSegGPT, which outperforms tokenisation-based baselines. Our results show that learnable subword tokenisation can improve sample-efficiency for BabyLM pretraining. We analyse the subword learning dynamics of our models and find that tokenisation gradually converges on subword units that balance morphological alignment and fine-grained segmentation.

Right Tool, Right Job: Native-Language Evaluation, Tokenizer Sensitivity, and Methodological Findings from a French-Only BabyLM

We submit MéTRON-FR, a 125M GPT-2 pretrained on 92.47M words of French, to the BabyLM 2026 Strict track. It scores 85.97 +/- 0.17% on QFrBLiMP (a native Quebec-French benchmark of grammatical minimal pairs) and 62.80% on the BabyLM-weighted leaderboard. A cross-lingual GLUE (General Language Understanding Evaluation) protocol that combines French task-data translation with rank-16 LoRA (Low-Rank Adaptation) produces a sharp task-type gradient: relational tasks gain measurably, while world-knowledge tasks regress. Bilingual Lexicon Induction aligns the French embeddings to GPT-2 at p@1 = 68.84 +/- 8.61%, 18X above chance, suggesting cross-lingual alignment tracks acquired grammatical competence rather than training duration. An ablation study shows that single-token zero-shot scoring is dominated by tokenizer and template artifacts at the child scale, motivating tokenizer-swap sensitivity, placebo-controlled prompting, and native-language minimal-pair benchmarks as standard diagnostics.
