Losing My Composure: Predicting Compositionality Over Time

Abstract

We explore the phenomenon of semantic change of German and English noun compounds, with the objective of investigating and modeling gradual changes of meanings and degrees of compositionality in the past and over time. To do so, we introduce the Compositionality Trend Prediction task, which is evaluated against a novel dataset of in-context compositionality ratings sampled across several decades of diachronic corpora for 23 German and 26 English target compounds, uniquely providing per-decade ratings and corresponding trends over time. These per-decade compositionality ratings allow us to investigate empirically untested hypotheses of generalized trends in compositionality over time, such as the idea that compounds should become less compositional (less transparent) over time. Beyond our empirical observations from the diachronic compositionality annotations, we perform experiments with semantic vector representations of varying complexity, as well as several temporal granularities for training these representations on diachronic data, resulting in about 100 models of each representation type, each covering a different 1--5 decade slice of a diachronic corpus. Contrary to the decisive tendency posited in the literature, we find only a small negative trend in compositionality over time in our target compounds. In our computational experiments, we find that using models trained on narrow time slices of diachronic data (single decades, or incrementally expanding temporal windows) align better with the per-decade compositionality ratings than those trained on an entire half-century window, the latter setting being an analog for the prevalent modeling approach of training representations on an entire half of a corpus' data. Additionally, we find static representations to be competitive with contextual representations in the Compositionality Trend Prediction task.

Investigating More Explainable and Partition-Free Compositionality Estimation for LLMs: A Rule-Generation Perspective

Compositional generalization tests are often used to estimate the compositionality of LLMs. However, such tests have the following limitations: (1) they only focus on the output results without considering LLMs' understanding of sample compositionality, resulting in explainability defects; (2) they rely on dataset partition to form the test set with combinations unseen in the training set, suffering from combination leakage issues. In this work, we propose a novel rule-generation perspective for compositionality estimation for LLMs. It requires LLMs to generate a program as rules for dataset mapping and provides estimates of the compositionality of LLMs using complexity-based theory. The perspective addresses the limitations of compositional generalization tests and provides a new way to analyze the compositionality characterization of LLMs. We conduct experiments and analysis of existing advanced LLMs based on this perspective on a string-to-grid task, and find various compositionality characterizations and compositionality deficiencies exhibited by LLMs.

ChronoLens: Measuring Language Change Across Time, Languages, and Linguistic Levels

Historical language change affects morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, yet computational studies typically examine these levels with incompatible representations and therefore cannot determine whether they evolve together across languages. We address this problem by asking how the magnitude and direction of change vary across linguistic levels, languages, and historical periods within a single analytical space. We introduce ChronoLens, a framework that combines frozen multilingual language models, feature-aligned crosscoders, and post-hoc linguistic interventions, and apply it to 44.98 million documents and approximately 17.2 billion tokens from five parliamentary traditions spanning 1803--2026. The resulting sparse representations agree substantially more strongly with linguistic statistics than dense embeddings or a pooled sparse autoencoder (ρ=0.72ρ=0.72 versus 0.290.29 and 0.280.28), and reveal that morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics generally change by comparable amounts within a language, while languages differ markedly in when, how far, and in which direction they change. These findings show that historical language change is a structured, multidimensional process: similar magnitudes can conceal different trajectories, and meaningful cross-linguistic comparison requires measuring both distance and direction.

Rational Communication Shapes Morphological Composition

Human languages expand vocabularies by combining existing morphemes rather than inventing arbitrary forms. Communicative efficiency shapes lexical systems at multiple levels (Gibson et al., 2019), yet morphological composition -- combining morphemes through compounding or affixation -- has rarely been modeled as a historically situated speaker choice among competing morpheme sequences, leaving unanswered why a language settles on one morpheme combination over other plausible alternatives. We ask whether a trade-off between listener recoverability and speaker production cost can predict attested compositions over contemporaneously available alternatives. Here we show, within the Rational Speech Act (RSA) framework (Frank & Goodman, 2012; Goodman & Frank, 2016) using a time-indexed lexicon constructed from Corpus of Historical American English (COHA) and Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA), that across 4323 naturally occurring English compounds and derivations spanning 1820--2019, attested compositions are systematically ranked above unattested alternatives generated from contemporaneously available morphemes. Models integrating semantic informativeness with production cost outperform semantic-only and cost-only baselines on Mean Reciprocal Rank (MRR) and top-k accuracy (Acc@k), with the advantage of the Pragmatic Speaker model (S1S_1) over the semantic-only baseline growing as the candidate set expands, where meaning alone leaves morphological choice underdetermined. These findings suggest that lexicalization reflects a communicative trade-off between expressiveness and efficiency, extending rational accounts of communication from utterance-level choice to the internal structure of words.
