Detail Continuation over a Trustworthy Coarse Scale for Autoregressive Super-Resolution

Abstract

Hallucination remains a persistent challenge in generative super-resolution (GSR), where reconstructed results may contain visually plausible yet weakly supported content, structural deviations, or unnatural textures with respect to the low-resolution (LR) input. Existing GSR methods have extensively explored the trade-off between perceptual realism and reconstruction fidelity, but the division between preserving reliable coarse-scale information and restoring more uncertain fine details is often handled implicitly within the overall restoration process. Visual autoregressive (VAR) modeling provides a natural opportunity to revisit this issue, as its coarse-to-fine next-scale prediction offers an explicit scale-wise generation interface. However, existing VAR-based SR methods still inherit the original full 1-to-NN autoregressive generation path, even though, for super-resolution, coarse-scale information in LR is often relatively more reliable, while long autoregressive chains may accumulate prediction errors. Motivated by these observations, we propose \textbf{K2N}, which reformulates VAR-based SR from full-path generation into a kk-to-NN detail continuation process. Specifically, early coarse-scale states are established directly from LR, while only the remaining finer scales are restored autoregressively. Experimental results show that K2N remains competitive with the VARSR baseline on standard SR metrics, while exhibiting clearer advantages on hallucination-focused evaluation. These findings suggest that explicitly rethinking the generation path in a scale-wise manner can be a promising direction for improving the reliability of generative super-resolution. VARestorer: One-Step VAR Distillation for Real-World Image Super-Resolution

Recent advancements in visual autoregressive models (VAR) have demonstrated their effectiveness in image generation, highlighting their potential for real-world image super-resolution (Real-ISR). However, adapting VAR for ISR presents critical challenges. The next-scale prediction mechanism, constrained by causal attention, fails to fully exploit global low-quality (LQ) context, resulting in blurry and inconsistent high-quality (HQ) outputs. Additionally, error accumulation in the iterative prediction severely degrades coherence in ISR task. To address these issues, we propose VARestorer, a simple yet effective distillation framework that transforms a pre-trained text-to-image VAR model into a one-step ISR model. By leveraging distribution matching, our method eliminates the need for iterative refinement, significantly reducing error propagation and inference time. Furthermore, we introduce pyramid image conditioning with cross-scale attention, which enables bidirectional scale-wise interactions and fully utilizes the input image information while adapting to the autoregressive mechanism. This prevents later LQ tokens from being overlooked in the transformer. By fine-tuning only 1.2% of the model parameters through parameter-efficient adapters, our method maintains the expressive power of the original VAR model while significantly enhancing efficiency. Extensive experiments show that VARestorer achieves state-of-the-art performance with 72.32 MUSIQ and 0.7669 CLIPIQA on DIV2K dataset, while accelerating inference by 10 times compared to conventional VAR inference.

Everything at Every Scale: Scale-Invariant Diffusion with Continuous Super-Resolution

Creating images from noise is image generation; reconstructing fine details from coarse inputs is super-resolution. Despite their practical differences, both can be understood as reversing information loss across scales. We introduce SKILD\textbf{SKILD}, a S\textbf{S}cale-invariant K\textbf{K}-Space I\textbf{I}mage L\textbf{L}earning D\textbf{D}iffusion model that unifies generation and continuous super-resolution within a single unconditional framework. Both natural images and critical physical systems exhibit scale invariance, and we leverage it to design a forward process that attenuates image content from fine to coarse scales while injecting spectrum-matched Gaussian noise, making scale an explicit coordinate of the diffusion dynamics. The same trained reverse process performs generation and continuous super-resolution by varying only the starting timestep: no task-specific architecture, no conditioning branch, no classifier-free guidance, no retraining per scale factor\textit{no task-specific architecture, no conditioning branch, no classifier-free guidance, no retraining per scale factor}. Empirically, SKILD reaches FID 2.652.65 and Inception Score 9.639.63 on unconditional CIFAR-10, performs 2×2\times--8×8\times super-resolution on ImageNet from a single unconditional checkpoint while outperforming conditional models across perceptual metrics, and reconstructs critical Ising models whose connected four-point correlations closely track the ground truth.

Adversarial Error Correction for Visual Autoregressive Generation

Visual Autoregressive (VAR) models have emerged as a powerful paradigm for image synthesis by performing hierarchical next-scale prediction. However, VAR models are inherently prone to cascading error propagation, where subtle coarse-scale mispredictions are amplified across the hierarchy, ultimately distorting the final synthesis. To mitigate this, we propose AID-VAR, a plug-and-play framework that enhances pre-trained VARs through Adversarially Injected Diagnosis. Instead of a standard passive generation, AID-VAR introduces a proactive error-correction mechanism inspired by the adversarial feedback in GANs. We deploy a discriminator to diagnose fidelity gaps at each scale transition, coupled with a lightweight guidance injector. This module operates as a non-invasive adapter that refines the feature manifold of a frozen VAR backbone, effectively steering the generation toward the distribution of real images without destabilizing the pre-trained latent space. Furthermore, to rigorously evaluate this cross-scale progression, we introduce the Inter-Scale Consistency Score (ISCS), a novel metric that quantifies the fidelity and structural alignment between consecutive resolution scales. Experimental results across various backbones demonstrate that AID-VAR delivers sharper textural details and fewer structural distortions with negligible overhead. For instance, AID-VAR-d20 achieves a 16% improvement in FID with only a 3% increase in parameters. These results establish AID-VAR as a highly efficient and scalable pathway for upgrading large-scale VAR generators, enhancing global coherence and local detail without altering training data, base architectures, or sampling schedules.
