Identity-Aware Human-Object Interaction Motion Captioning

Abstract

Existing human-object interaction (HOI) motion captioning methods typically describe what happens while referring to the subject using generic terms such as "a person" or "someone", without grounding the caption in subject identity. To address this limitation, we introduce Identity-Aware Human-Object Interaction Motion Captioning task. This task requires each generated caption to specify both the subject identity and the corresponding HOI motion. For example, the model generates "Sub_ID lifts the chair" rather than "A person lifts the chair". For this task, we design identity-aware HOI motion captions based on the BEHAVE and InterCap datasets. We further propose ID-HOINet, which learns from multi-view videos while supporting single-view identity-aware HOI motion caption generation. ID-HOINet contains two core components: Multi-View Identity-Motion Learning Module (MVIML) and Two-Stage Caption Rewriting Strategy (TSCR). MVIML learns from multi-view videos by modeling dependencies across temporal stages and camera viewpoints, capturing identity and interaction motion features. At inference, the TSCR first retrieves the subject identity and generates identity-agnostic HOI motion captions. TSCR then rewrites these captions with the predicted identity to produce the final identity-aware HOI motion captions. Experiments demonstrate that ID-HOINet achieves state-of-the-art performance. Code will be released upon acceptance.

MotionAtlas: Detailed Region Captioning for Motion-Centric Videos

We propose MotionAtlas, a system for detailed captioning of motion-centric videos, comprising (1) a dedicated human-annotated benchmark, (2) a scalable, high-quality pipeline to construct training samples, and (3) a family of powerful Video-MLLMs. Unlike conventional global motion captioning datasets, we focus on region-aware motion captioning: given a video and a spatiotemporal mask, the model generates precise descriptions of motion within the target region, thereby alleviating visual clutter and motion entanglement and enabling reliable, quantifiable evaluation. Concretely, we first build MotionAtlas-Bench, a comprehensive benchmark comprising 2,073 multiple-choice questions, meticulously annotated for a curated set of high-quality, motion-centric videos, to evaluate fine-grained motion understanding of the objects in question. Second, we design a rigorous and scalable data pipeline that leverages self-bootstrap refinement to suppress fine-grained hallucinations, yielding 159k high-quality motion captioning data. Third, we design a tailored training data composition strategy, which achieves consistent and substantial performance gains across diverse baseline Video-MLLMs, including Molmo2 and Qwen3-VL. For instance, MotionAtlas-4B surpasses Qwen3-VL-4B by an average of 5.2 percentage points across general motion benchmarks. The benchmark, dataset, and code have been released.

Beyond Anonymous Captions: Grounding Character Identity in Video Captioning and Question Answering

Linking people's appearance and actions to character identities is essential for understanding video narratives. We present a framework for identity-aware video captioning and person-centric question answering that combines automatic character identification, explicit spatial grounding, and task-specific adaptation. Starting from LSMDC v2 movie clips, our pipeline matches detected faces to actor reference images, tracks characters across frames, and builds inputs with identity-linked bounding boxes. A strong vision-language model generates identity-aware captions and questions, which are manually verified and filtered to create a benchmark of 750 captioned clips and 3,000 person-centric questions. We study five grounding strategies combining textual coordinates with visual face or estimated person boxes across Video-MLLM families at roughly 2B, 4B, and 8B parameters and larger frontier models. Combining visual face boxes with textual coordinates yields the most consistent performance across scales and significantly improves overall performance over coordinates alone. Smaller models tend to over-assign known identities when the queried person is not grounded, while larger models better recognize such UNIDENTIFIED cases. We introduce BAC by LoRA fine-tuning Qwen models at 2B, 4B, and 8B scales on about 32K identity-aware captioned clips. Across all scales, BAC outperforms every other evaluated model family of comparable size. BAC-8B reaches 93.20% overall QA accuracy, ranking behind only GPT-5.6 Sol among the frontier models evaluated in our study. Overall, explicitly communicating who is where, together with lightweight task-specific adaptation, substantially improves identity-aware video understanding without changing the underlying architecture. We release the benchmark, training data, code, and BAC checkpoints at https://github.com/momentslab/beyond-anonymous-captions.

AgentHOI: Multi-Agent Reasoning for Human-Object-Interaction Video Generation via Implicit Representation Alignment

Recent advances in video diffusion models have spurred interest in human-object interaction (HOI) video generation, which demands fine-grained control over interaction logic beyond single-subject animation. However, existing HOI methods rely heavily on explicit motion control, limiting scalability and generalization across diverse objects and interactions. In this study, we propose AgentHOI, a text-driven HOI video generation following a thinking-before-generation framework that bridges the gap between high-level textual intent and physical execution through multi-agent reasoning over perception, interaction, and motion planning. Building upon the generated interaction plans, we further strengthen text-driven motion understanding. We introduce an implicit text-motion alignment strategy that distills text-to-motion priors into the video diffusion model, enabling robust HOI synthesis without explicit motion inputs at inference. Experiments show that AgentHOI significantly improves interaction naturalness, object appearance preservation, and adherence to complex textual instructions across challenging object-centric scenarios such as wearing and riding.
