Sharp Barron Regularity Results for Coulombic Many-Electron Wave Functions

Authors: Pingbing Ming, Hao Yu

Abstract

We establish sharp Barron regularity for Coulombic many-electron wave functions after extraction of the universal cut-off Jastrow factors. Following the factorization of Fournais et al.\cite[Definition1.4]{FournaisEtAl2005}, for a Coulombic eigenfunction ψψ we define the successive quotients by

φ=e−F2,cutψandφ3=e−F3,cutφ=e−(F2,cut+F3,cut)ψ.φ=e^{-F_{2,\mathrm{cut}}}ψ\quad\text{and}\quad φ_3=e^{-F_{3,\mathrm{cut}}}φ=e^{-(F_{2,\mathrm{cut}}+F_{3,\mathrm{cut}})}ψ.

Then

φ,φ3∈Bs(R3N)for every s<2.φ,φ_3\in\mathcal{B}^s(\mathbb{R}^{3N}) \qquad\text{for every }s<2.

This range is optimal among universal factorizations. No factor depending only on the particle number and the nuclear data, but not on the eigenfunction or its eigenvalue, can make every corresponding quotient belong to B2\mathcal{B}^2. We also determine the exact endpoint growth. Writing ε=2−s\varepsilon=2-s, we prove that, for either u=φu=φ or u=φ3u=φ_3, there is a computable constant MM independent of ε\varepsilon such that

∥u∥B2−ε≤Mε2∥u∥B1.\left\|u\right\|_{\mathcal{B}^{2-\varepsilon}}\leq\frac{M}{\varepsilon^2}\left\|u\right\|_{\mathcal{B}^1}.

For the unperturbed two-electron atom we prove, with a constant independent of ε\varepsilon,

∣∥φ3∥B2−ε−32πZ∣φ3(0,0)∣ε2∣≤Cε.\left|\left\|φ_3\right\|_{\mathcal{B}^{2-\varepsilon}}-\frac{32πZ\lvertφ_3(0,0)\rvert}{\varepsilon^2}\right|\leq\frac{C}{\varepsilon}.

Hence the quadratic rate in the upper bound is sharp whenever ∣φ3(0,0)∣≠0\lvertφ_3(0,0)\rvert\neq0, as is the case for the ground state.

Sharp Mixed Spectral Barron Regularity of Coulombic Many-Electron Wave Functions

We establish sharp mixed spectral Barron regularity for eigenfunctions of molecular Coulomb Hamiltonians. The mixed norm is a Fourier L1L^1 norm with one isotropic weight and coordinate-product weights, and therefore detects regularity invisible to the isotropic Barron scale. For a nonempty set II of electron indices on which the wave function is antisymmetric, we derive an explicit admissible region for the isotropic order ss and the coordinate orders α,βα,β. This region is optimal as a uniform statement over the class of clamped-nuclei Coulomb Hamiltonians. For fixed-spin components with two occupied spin blocks, it reduces to s+α+β<1s+α+β<1; in the fully spin-polarized class it reduces to s+α<1s+α<1. In particular, if Iσ\mathcal I_σ denotes the family of occupied same-spin blocks determined by σσ, then every fixed-spin spatial component ψσψ_σ satisfies, for every 0≤α<10\leqα<1, (∑I∈Iσ∏i∈I⟨ξi⟩α)ψσ^∈L1(R3N).\left(\sum_{I\in\mathcal I_σ}\prod_{i\in I}\langleξ_i\rangle^α\right)\widehat{ψ_σ}\in L^1(\mathbb{R}^{3N}). For a fully spin-polarized state, Iσ={{1,…,N}}\mathcal I_σ=\{\{1,\ldots,N\}\}.

Regularity of Second-Order Elliptic PDEs in Spectral Barron Spaces

We establish a regularity theorem for second-order elliptic PDEs on Rd\mathbb{R}^{d} in spectral Barron spaces. Under mild ellipticity and smallness assumptions, the solution gains two additional orders of Barron regularity. As a corollary, we identify a class of PDEs whose solutions can be approximated by two-layer neural networks with cosine activation functions, where the width of the neural network is independent of the spatial dimension.

Large Electron Model: A Universal Ground State Predictor

We introduce Large Electron Model, a single neural network model that produces variational wavefunctions of interacting electrons over the entire Hamiltonian parameter manifold. Our model employs the Fermi Sets architecture, a universal representation of many-body fermionic wavefunctions, which is further conditioned on Hamiltonian parameter and particle number. For interacting electrons in a two-dimensional harmonic potential, a single trained model accurately predicts the ground state wavefunction while generalizing across unseen coupling strengths and particle-number sectors, producing both accurate real-space charge densities and ground state energies, even up to 5050 particles. Our results establish a foundation model method for material discovery that is grounded in the variational principle, while accurately treating strong electron correlation beyond the capacity of density functional theory.
