Padamitra: Grounded Glossary Generation for Classical Sanskrit

Abstract

We introduce grounded glossary generation, a structured task requiring models to recover semantically meaningful Sanskrit phrases and produce translation-grounded meanings from a sloka-translation pair, formalizing the traditional patha commentary practice as an evaluable NLP objective. We construct a benchmark of 31,316 sloka-translation-glossary triples from the Valmiki Ramayana and Srimad Bhagavatam, paired with two metrics: Jaccard for phrase recovery and Meaning Faithfulness for semantic consistency. Across zero-shot, few-shot, and instruction fine-tuned variants of Gemma-3n-E4B, Gemma-3-12B, Phi-4, and Qwen3.5-9B, instruction fine-tuning substantially outperforms prompting, while explicit segmentation yields gains. Error analysis identifies over-segmentation of sandhi and samasa compounds as the dominant failure mode, pointing to morphological modeling as the key bottleneck for faithful Sanskrit lexical decomposition.

Naamah: A Large Scale Synthetic Sanskrit NER Corpus via DBpedia Seeding and LLM Generation

The digitisation of classical Sanskrit literature is impeded by a scarcity of annotated resources, particularly for Named Entity Recognition. While recent methodologies utilise generic Large Language Models (LLMs) for data augmentation, these approaches remain prone to error and often lack the reasoning depth required for classical grammar. In this work, we introduce Naamah, a high quality silver standard Sanskrit NER dataset comprising 102,942 sentences. We propose a methodology that combines entity extraction from DBpedia with the generative capabilities of a 24B parameter hybrid reasoning model to create grammatically natural and synthetically diverse training data. We utilize this dataset to benchmark two transformer architectures: the massive multilingual XLM RoBERTa and the parameter efficient IndicBERTv2.

SalamandraTA at WMT 2026 Terminology Shared Task: Hard Examples Are Better Teachers

Terminology-aware translation asks for more than a correct translation: the output must use the exact terms a glossary prescribes. The standard recipe, fine-tuning on glossary-annotated translation pairs, hides an inefficiency: for most examples the glossary prescribes exactly what the model would have produced anyway, so they teach nothing about following a glossary. We therefore keep only the examples where the model's own translation contradicts the glossary. In a controlled study at fixed data volume, this selection alone raises term accuracy from 78.7% to 89.9%. The filtered data, built by a two-way synthetic pipeline on open models, is part of the instruction-tuning mixture of our public release SalamandraTA-7b-instruct v3.0, which, used exactly as released and wrapped in a document-level inference pipeline, forms the BSC submission to the WMT26 Terminology Shared Task Track 1. At the official WMT26 evaluation, our system achieves 94.2% term success at 74.6 chrF++, with only two of the twenty-two submissions outperforming it on both metrics. On last year's benchmark, it also surpasses our GRPO-based system, despite being trained solely with ordinary supervised fine-tuning.

SCRIBE: Diagnostic Evaluation and Rich Transcription Models for Indic ASR

Automatic speech recognition replaces typing only when correction costs less than manual entry - a threshold determined by error types, not counts: fixing a misrecognized domain term costs far more than inserting a comma. Word error rate (WER) fails on two fronts: it collapses distinct error categories into a single scalar, and it structurally penalizes agglutinative languages where valid sandhi merges inflate scores. We introduce SCRIBE, a diagnostic framework offering categorical error decomposition into lexical, punctuation, numeral, and domain-entity rates via sandhi-tolerant alignment with domain vocabulary injection. Human validation confirms SCRIBE aligns with expert judgment where WER does not. We release SCRIBE, an LLM curation pipeline, benchmarks, and open-weight rich transcription models for Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada.
