TokenMapper: A Step Toward Interoperable Speech Token Translation

Authors: Tal Kozakov, Tal Rosenwein, Eliya Nachmani

Abstract

Neural audio codecs discretize speech into token sequences, but the resulting token spaces differ in vocabulary and codebook structure, preventing direct communication across models. This limitation affects applications such as conversational voice agents and speech to speech translation systems where multiple speech models must interact. As a result, transferring information between speech systems typically requires decoding to waveform audio and re-encoding with a second tokenizer, increasing latency and introducing potential information loss. To address these limitations, we present TokenMapper, a direction aware framework for direct token to token translation between heterogeneous speech tokenizers in the discrete domain. TokenMapper supports structurally mismatched token spaces, including mappings between single codebook and multi codebook representations, under a shared effective token rate. Experiments on GLM-4-Voice, MiMi and DualCodec show consistent cross model performance. Specifically, translation WER approaches native reconstructions within 2.5-6.8% absolute WER, human MOS for TokenMapper outputs ranges from 2.29 to 4.39, following the same direction level trends as UTMOS and end to end latency is reduced by 4.8-94.5% relative to waveform bridging, reaching up to 972 ms per utterance. These results provide a practical step toward cross model speech token interoperability without intermediate waveform reconstruction.

UniAudio-Token: Empowering Semantic Speech Tokenizers with General Audio Perception

Semantic speech tokenizers have become a widely used interface for Audio-LLMs, owing to their compact single-codebook design and strong linguistic alignment. However, their focus on linguistic abstraction induces acoustic blindness, limiting their applicability beyond speech-centric tasks. We propose UniAudio-Token, a framework that empowers semantic tokenizers with general audio perception without compromising speech ability. Instead of altering the semantic paradigm, UniAudio-Token mitigates its information loss through two key innovations: (1) Semantic-Acoustic Primitives (SAP) provide structured supervision by decomposing audio into linguistic content, vocal attributes, and auditory-scene primitives; and (2) Semantic-Acoustic Equilibrium (SAE) introduces a content-aware gating mechanism that adaptively restores fine-grained acoustic details from shallow layers. Extensive evaluations show that UniAudio-Token learns comprehensive universal representations while preserving high-fidelity speech generation. When integrated with downstream LLMs, it outperforms all single-codebook baseline tokenizers on both understanding and generation tasks, effectively serving as a unified audio interface. We publicly release all our code, including training and inference scripts, together with the model checkpoints at https://github.com/Tencent/Universal_Audio_Tokenizer.

wav2tok 2.0: Scalable Audio Tokenization Maintaining Explicit Pairwise Token Alignment for Efficient Audio Retrieval

Learning discrete speech representations that preserve similarity across variable-length utterances is central to query-by-example spoken term detection (QbE-STD). While wav2tok introduced CTC-based sequence alignment to enforce token consistency, its tightly coupled clustering and alignment training recipe limits scalability. We propose wav2tok 2.0, a scalable alignment-aware speech tokenizer built on the BEST-STD backbone. wav2tok 2.0 employs staged training, first learning discriminative, speaker-invariant representations via contrastive learning and vector quantization, and then enforcing pairwise token consistency using a CTC alignment loss and a novel DTW-aligned framewise prediction objective with adaptive weighting. Experiments show that wav2tok 2.0 consistently outperforms BEST-STD and general-purpose tokenizers on QbE-STD while remaining efficient and scalable.

Speech Codec Probing from Semantic and Phonetic Perspectives

Speech tokenizers are essential for connecting speech to large language models (LLMs) in multimodal systems. Speech tokenizers are expected to preserve both semantic and acoustic information for downstream understanding and generation tasks. However, emerging evidence suggests that the term "semantic" in speech processing does not align with linguistic lexical-semantic, leading to a mismatch between speech and text modality. In this paper, we systematically analyze the information encoded by several widely used speech tokenizers, evaluating their lexical-semantic and phonetic content through three tasks. Our results show that current tokenizers primarily capture phonetic rather than lexical-semantic structure, deriving practical implications for the design of next-generation speech tokenization methods.
