Can LLMs Follow the Pulse of a Crisis? Evaluating Crisis Sentiment in Bangladesh's July Uprising

Abstract

Crisis sentiment analysis is especially challenging for low-resource languages such as Bangla, where language, context, and public reaction shift rapidly. We introduce UNRESTSENT200K, a Bangla crisis sentiment dataset with approximately 200K Facebook and YouTube comments from the July-August 2024 Bangladesh uprising. The dataset covers five event-aligned phases, from early escalation and internet blackout to regime transition and a later flood crisis. Each comment is linked to its parent post, enabling evaluation with and without discourse context. All comments are annotated through a fully human process involving 14 native Bangla-speaking annotators and senior validation, achieving substantial agreement (kappa = 0.73, alpha = 0.71) and 94.2% blind-audit agreement. We benchmark fine-tuned encoders, prompted LLMs, and LoRA-tuned LLMs. Results show that parent-post context consistently improves performance, while temporal shift across phases causes large performance drops. Strong LLMs perform well, but still struggle with sarcasm, implicit political references, and phase-dependent meaning. UNRESTSENT200K provides a benchmark for studying context-aware and temporally robust sentiment analysis in low-resource crisis discourse. MultiSoc-4D: A Benchmark for Diagnosing Instruction-Induced Label Collapse in Closed-Set LLM Annotation of Bengali Social Media

Annotation automation via Large Language Models (LLMs) is the core approach for scaling NLP datasets; however, LLM behavior with respect to closed-set instructions in low-resource languages has not been well studied. We present MultiSoc-4D, a Bengali social media dataset benchmark, which contains 58K+ social media comments from six sources annotated along four dimensions: category, sentiment, hate speech, and sarcasm. By employing a structured pipeline where ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Grok individually annotate separate partitions, while sharing a common validation set of 20%, we diagnose LLM behavior systematically. We discover a prevalent phenomenon called "instruction-induced label collapse", wherein LLMs show a systematic preference towards fallback labels (Other, Neutral, No), leading to high agreement rates but under-detection of minority categories. For example, we find that LLMs failed to detect 79% and 75% of instances with hateful and sarcastic content compared to a human-calibrated reference. Furthermore, we prove that it represents a "label agreement illusion", statistically validated via almost null Fleiss' Kappa (κ0.001κ\approx -0.001) on sarcasm detection. Across 40+ LLMs, we benchmark this annotation bias propagation within the training pipeline, regardless of architectural differences. We release MultiSoc-4D as a diagnostic benchmark for annotation biases in Bengali NLP.

LLM-guided Semi-Supervised Approaches for Social Media Crisis Data Classification

Semi-supervised learning approaches have been investigated as a means to enhance the analysis of social media data in disaster management contexts. In this work, we present the first empirical evaluation of large language model (LLM) guided semi-supervised learning for crisis related tweet classification. We compare two recent LLM assisted semi-supervised methods, VerifyMatch and LLM guided Co-Training ( LG-CoTrain), against established semi-supervised baselines. Our results show that LG-CoTrain significantly outperforms classical semi-supervised approaches in low resource settings with 5, 10 and 25 labeled examples per class, achieving the highest averaged Macro F1 across events. VerifyMatch achieves competitive performance while also demonstrating strong calibration properties. As the number of labeled examples increases, the performance gap narrows and Self Training emerges as a strong baseline. We further observe that compact semi-supervised models can, in some cases, outperform very large LLMs operating in zero-shot settings. This finding highlights the potential of transferring knowledge from LLMs into smaller and more deployable models through LLM guided semi-supervised learning, offering a practical pathway for real world disaster response applications. BenSyc: Benchmarking Conversational Sycophancy and Human Alignment in LLMs for Bengali Contexts

Large language models (LLMs) increasingly participate in emotionally sensitive social conversations, where responses may shift from balanced support toward excessive validation or escalatory alignment. Existing sycophancy research primarily focuses on factual agreement and instruction-following settings, leaving culturally grounded conversational sycophancy underexplored. We introduce BenSyc, the first benchmark for studying conversational sycophancy in Bengali social contexts. Starting from 11,840 Reddit posts and 170k comments collected from communities across Bangladesh and West Bengal, we construct a human-validated benchmark with binary labels and a fine-grained five-level taxonomy spanning Invalidation, Neutral, Support, Validation, and Escalation. We evaluate more than 15 open and proprietary LLMs on conversational alignment classification and response generation tasks. Results show that distinguishing empathetic support from reinforcement-oriented validation remains challenging even for frontier instruction-tuned models: the best system achieves only 61.8 Macro-F1 on binary detection and 61.7 Macro-F1 on five-class classification. In generation settings, several models frequently produce strongly validating or escalatory responses in emotionally charged situations. Our findings highlight substantial variation across model families and conversational behaviors, underscoring the importance of culturally grounded multilingual benchmarks for evaluating socially aligned conversational AI systems.
