Abstract

Does high image fidelity imply readable screen content in 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS)? We introduce 3DGS-SC, a controlled static screen-content dataset and benchmark for examining this mismatch. Ten procedural scenes provide fixed multi-view splits, exact cameras, screen masks, text boxes, and transcripts. The protocol separates whole-image fidelity, screen-region fidelity, OCR readability, and edge preservation. In the reported five-method comparison, LightGaussian exceeds Mip-Splatting in screen PSNR by only 0.08 dB, yet trails it in OCR accuracy by 12.7 percentage points. Across all ten method pairs, screen-PSNR and OCR orderings disagree in seven cases. These aggregate results expose a method-selection failure of fidelity-only evaluation. Complementing prior text-aware 3DGS research, 3DGS-SC targets controlled monitor interfaces and exact annotations; scene-wise robustness and acquisition effects remain open validation questions.

Drop-In Perceptual Optimization for 3D Gaussian Splatting

Despite their output being ultimately consumed by human viewers, 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) methods often rely on ad-hoc combinations of pixel-level losses, resulting in blurry renderings. To address this, we systematically explore perceptual optimization strategies for 3DGS by searching over a diverse set of distortion losses. We conduct the first-of-its-kind large-scale human subjective study on 3DGS, involving 39,320 pairwise ratings across several datasets and 3DGS frameworks. A regularized version of Wasserstein Distortion, which we call WD-R, emerges as the clear winner, excelling at recovering fine textures without incurring a higher splat count. WD-R is preferred by raters more than 2.3×2.3\times over the original 3DGS loss, and 1.5×1.5\times over the current best method Perceptual-GS. WD-R also consistently achieves state-of-the-art LPIPS, DISTS, and FID scores across various datasets, and generalizes across recent frameworks, such as Mip-Splatting and Scaffold-GS, where replacing the original loss with WD-R consistently enhances perceptual quality within a similar resource budget (number of splats for Mip-Splatting, model size for Scaffold-GS), and leads to reconstructions being preferred by human raters 1.8×1.8\times and 3.6×3.6\times, respectively. We also find that this carries over to the task of 3DGS scene compression, with ≈50%\approx 50\% bitrate savings for comparable perceptual metric performance.

SPLATIFY: Reproduce, Discover, Innovate! From Papers and Ideas to Trainable 3DGS Code

The rapid growth of 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) research demands significant effort to reimplement papers before building on them. We introduce SPLATIFY, a multi-agent framework that converts 3DGS papers into trainable gsplat-based implementations, where generic paper-to-code methods and frontier models fail. SPLATIFY achieves this through five innovations: (1) A context-free grammar for gsplat over a modular method template with extension points for losses, densification, rendering, and optimization, constraining synthesis so generated code satisfies gsplat's architectural invariants by construction. (2) Architectural elements for faithful reproduction: fork-aware citation recovery retrieving component-level code at function-level granularity, Graph-of-Thought synthesis in topological dependency order, RAG-guided in-context example selection from over 20 verified implementations, and visual feedback combining PSNR-guided regeneration, Gaussian-level structural checks, and VLM-driven patching. (3) Knowledge-driven compositional improvement that autonomously finds weaknesses and composes complementary regularizers, losses, and densification strategies to improve upon original results. (4) Interdisciplinary method discovery where agents retrieve physical priors from outside the 3DGS literature and compose them with rendering knowledge to produce methods for previously unaddressed scene types. (5) SPLATIFY-Bench, an evaluation framework across 30 diverse 3DGS papers. On papers without public code, SPLATIFY matches expert implementations while reducing development time from weeks to minutes, and through compositional discovery further improves PSNR by up to 2.4 dB. We additionally demonstrate novel methods for volumetric nebula rendering and other scientific domains, synthesized entirely by SPLATIFY.

When 3D Gaussian Splatting Recovers Real Surfaces

When does 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) recover the true scene surface rather than just overfitting view-dependent appearance? We answer this by developing a mathematical framework based on a first-hit rendering abstraction that cleanly isolates geometry from appearance. We prove that geometric misalignment forcefully converts spatial textures into high-frequency angular signals via parallax. This establishes a strict identifiability window: if angular capacity is bounded, surface-consistent solutions are mathematically preferred; if unrestricted, the same images can be perfectly explained by an incorrect, opaque billboard geometry. Experiments on synthetic stress tests confirm this prediction, showing billboard failures emerge precisely at high angular capacities. Conversely, in the real-world datasets we evaluate under standard capture protocols, reconstructions remain surface-consistent even at high SH degrees, which is consistent with the prediction that rich spatial texture can push billboard solutions outside the tested angular-capacity range.
