Abstract

Prior avatar embodiment research has studied tracking completeness (how faithfully the body, hands, and face are sensed and reproduced) and personalized appearance in isolation, each requiring specialized lab equipment. How these factors interact on consumer hardware remains an open question, because no existing system unifies body pose, face, hands, and personalized appearance on a standalone headset. We present FlowAvatar, a system enabling real-time personalized look-alike avatars with full-body pose, hand articulation, facial expression, and eye gaze tracking from sparse egocentric inputs on consumer XR devices (Meta Quest Pro). Our pose model achieves competitive spatial accuracy and state-of-the-art temporal consistency on the AMASS benchmark against prior works with comprehensive spatial and temporal losses validated through architecture and loss ablations, while running in real-time. Two user studies (N=12, N=10) provide converging evidence that tracking completeness and personalized appearance serve complementary roles: tracking completeness broadly improves perceived motion quality, while only their combination achieves positive total embodiment.

FFAvatar: Few-Shot, Feed-Forward, and Generalizable Avatar Reconstruction

Avatar reconstruction has traditionally relied on per-subject optimization that requires hours of computation or on expensive preprocessing that limits scalability. We introduce FFAvatar, a generalizable feed-forward framework that reconstructs high-quality, animatable 3D Gaussian head avatars from few-shot unposed portrait images in seconds. FFAvatar fuses information from multiple source images into a unified canonical Gaussian representation through Multi-View Query-Former, which is animated via FLAME parameters predicted end-to-end directly from pixels, eliminating the overhead of offline FLAME extraction. We further propose a three-stage training curriculum that achieves both broad generalization and high-fidelity reconstruction: (i) scalable pretraining on extensive monocular video data with over 1M identities to learn strong generalizable priors; (ii) multi-view fine-tuning on a small but high-quality dataset of 360-degree captures to enhance geometric fidelity and extreme-view awareness; and (iii) optional personalization that adapts to specific identities for maximum fidelity within 500 optimization steps. Extensive experiments demonstrate that FFAvatar sets a new standard for identity preservation, geometric consistency, and animation fidelity. On the NeRSemble benchmark, it outperforms the state-of-the-art LAM by a substantial 5.5 PSNR gain. Furthermore, FFAvatar enables real-time deployment, reconstructing avatars in 2 seconds without personalization and 10 seconds with personalization, while supporting 49 FPS animation on a single NVIDIA A100 GPU.

SARAH: Spatially Aware Real-time Agentic Humans

As embodied agents become central to VR, telepresence, and digital human applications, their motion must go beyond speech-aligned gestures: agents should turn toward users, respond to their movement, and maintain natural gaze. Current methods lack this spatial awareness. We close this gap with the first real-time, fully causal method for spatially-aware conversational motion, deployable on a streaming VR headset. Given a user's position and dyadic audio, our approach produces full-body motion that aligns gestures with speech while orienting the agent according to the user. Our architecture combines a causal transformer-based VAE with interleaved latent tokens for streaming inference and a flow matching model conditioned on user trajectory and audio. To support varying gaze preferences, we introduce a gaze scoring mechanism with classifier-free guidance to decouple learning from control: the model captures natural spatial alignment from data, while users can adjust eye contact intensity at inference time. On the Embody 3D dataset, our method achieves state-of-the-art motion quality at over 300 FPS -- 3x faster than non-causal baselines -- while capturing the subtle spatial dynamics of natural conversation. We validate our approach on a live VR system, bringing spatially-aware conversational agents to real-time deployment. Please see https://evonneng.github.io/sarah/ for details.

PHAF-Personalized Hand Avatars in a Flash

We present PHAF-Personalized Hand Avatars in a Flash, a personalized photo-realistic hand avatar which provides high quality multi-view renders from just two images (dorsal and palmar views).Unlike slow optimization-based techniques, PHAF generates fast personalized textures for real-time deployment on edge devices. Our approach combines semantic guided mesh alignment and densified texture extraction to transfer high-frequency details efficiently. A view-based inpainting network refines textures ensuring smooth, continuous appearance. PHAF generalizes to novel viewpoints and leverages a parametric hand model for accurate articulations, making it compatible with standard graphics engines. Experiments show it is comparable to existing methods in visual fidelity while drastically reducing texture generation time by 30 times, enabling practical AR/VR applications.
