Abstract
We propose a continuous learning formulation for non-forgetting tasks with the spherical parameter space in asymptotic regime . Each task has an optimum , minimizing its corresponding loss function on sphere. We reduce each task to an acceptable loss region modeled by a geodesic ball on centered at with radius . To model task dependencies (similarities), task optima are distributed by a Neyman-Scott clustered point process . Cluster centers form a homogeneous Poisson point process on sphere, while intra-cluster task optima follow a von Mises-Fisher distribution with mean and concentration . Each task learning algorithm is considered to be a channel , where is the learned parameter of task and . Since in continual learning, the learner does not need to reach exactly to successfully learn task , to avoid forgetting as well as reliable learning, it only needs for the learned parameter vector to enter . Using this model, we derive an upper bound on ensuring as and , where is a constant. Finally, for tasks sampled uniformly from , we derive an upper bound for total information theoretic capacity under the non-forgetting constraint for each task.
Continual Learning
Continual Learning studies how models acquire knowledge from changing data streams while retaining or selectively revising what they learned before.
