Abstract

As the Arctic transitions toward a seasonally ice-free state, capturing the complex morphology of submerged sea ice is crucial for advancing models of ocean-ice-atmosphere heat exchange and monitoring under-ice habitats. Currently, sub-surface ice mapping is predominantly achieved through acoustic sensors such as multibeam sonar. While sonar provides robust large-scale geometry, it lacks spectral and high-resolution textural information required to record fine morphological features - a critical limitation in under-ice environments, where sparse visual features and degraded sensing conditions challenge the capture of detailed structural and optical surface properties. We present a benchmark for vision-based under-ice 3D reconstruction using real-world data from the MOSAiC expedition and synthetic data generated in an Unreal Engine-based underwater robotics simulator. The benchmark evaluates Structure-From-Motion (SfM) and monocular depth estimation, with quantitative comparison enabled through cross-modal registration to upward-looking multibeam sonar.

Why 3D Reconstruction Breaks Down on Under-Ice AUV Video, and How to Predict It

Reconstruction of 3D structures using under-ice AUV video footage has been inaccurate, although it is not certain whether this is due to shortcomings in the methods or an inherent deficiency of the capture system. We test four different models for reconstruction on the same Antarctic under-ice AUV video (Icefin, Kamb Ice Stream): classical feature matching SfM, differentiable photometric splatting, volumetric depth fusion, and a pose-free feed-forward foundation model. All four fail, each in a distinct way: near-total registration yielding almost no structure, geometrically broken output despite healthy photometric metrics, a persistent coverage artifact, and unstable cross-chunk scale. We show that all four are consistent with the same capture regime, a small camera-baseline-to-scene-depth ratio. Following our analysis, we propose a detection system that flags this type of failure in minutes, rather than hours of wasted compute.

BALTIC: A Benchmark and Cross-Domain Strategy for 3D Reconstruction Across Air and Underwater Domains Under Varying Illumination

Robust 3D reconstruction across varying environmental conditions remains a critical challenge for robotic perception, particularly when transitioning between air and water. To address this, we introduce BALTIC, a controlled benchmark designed to systematically evaluate modern 3D reconstruction methods under variations in medium and lighting. The benchmark comprises 13 datasets spanning two media (air and water) and three lighting conditions (ambient, artificial, and mixed), with additional variations in motion type, scanning pattern, and initialization trajectory, resulting in a diverse set of sequences. Our experimental setup features a custom water tank equipped with a monocular camera and an HTC Vive tracker, enabling accurate ground-truth pose estimation. We further investigate cross-domain reconstruction by augmenting underwater image sequences with a small number of in-air views captured under similar lighting conditions. We evaluate Structure-from-Motion reconstruction using COLMAP in terms of both trajectory accuracy and scene geometry, and use these reconstructions as input to Neural Radiance Fields and 3D Gaussian Splatting methods. The resulting models are assessed against ground-truth trajectories and in-air references, while rendered outputs are compared using perceptual and photometric metrics. Additionally, we perform a color restoration analysis to evaluate radiometric consistency across domains. Our results show that under controlled, texture-consistent conditions, Gaussian Splatting with simple preprocessing (e.g., white balance correction) can achieve performance comparable to specialized underwater methods, although its robustness decreases in more complex and heterogeneous real-world environments

Adapting Vision Foundation Models to Acoustics for Pose-Free 3D Sonar Reconstruction

Vision foundation models trained on Internet-scale RGB datasets enable remarkable capabilities across a range of tasks, from text-to-video generation to few-shot 3D scene reconstruction. An acoustic foundation model trained on large-scale sonar datasets could enable similar capabilities in the underwater domain, where turbidity and low-visibility conditions make conventional RGB foundation models inapplicable. Unfortunately, a lack of freely available large-scale sonar datasets makes training such a model from scratch impractical. In this work, we demonstrate that vision foundation models can be efficiently adapted to the sonar setting by (1) exploiting the geometric relationship between the two sensing modalities and (2) employing accurate physics-based noise models for synthetic data generation. The resulting sonar adaptation models enable new capabilities: For the first time, we experimentally demonstrate sonar-based pose-free 3D reconstruction.
