Abstract

Massively multilingual speech modeling has made remarkable progress in recent years, yet existing training resources and benchmarks still underrepresent much of the linguistic long tail. To address this gap, we introduce ELARSpeech, a large-scale multilingual speech resource comprising 30,202 hours of speech across 675 underrepresented languages, curated from the Endangered Languages Archive. Combining human-annotated and unlabeled recordings, the corpus spans diverse recording conditions, domains, and language families. Beyond corpus construction, our experiments show how ELARSpeech supports extending ASR and TTS capabilities to diverse underrepresented languages, with further benefits from pseudo-labeling unlabeled data. At the same time, our speech representation analysis reveals remaining limitations in transferring existing multilingual models to the linguistic long tail. Together, ELARSpeech provides both a resource and a testbed for extending multilingual speech technology further into the linguistic long tail. We publicly release the dataset, all trained ASR and TTS models, and the complete data construction pipeline to facilitate research on long-tail multilingual speech technologies.

WorldSpeech: A Multilingual Speech Corpus from Around the World

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) performs well for high-resource languages with abundant paired audio-transcript data, but its accuracy degrades sharply for most languages due to limited publicly available aligned data. To this end, we introduce WorldSpeech, a 24 kHz multilingual speech corpus comprising 65k hours of aligned audio-transcript data across 76 languages, collected from diverse public sources including parliamentary proceedings, international broadcasts, and public-domain audiobooks. For 37 languages, WorldSpeech provides more than 200 hours of aligned speech, with 28 exceeding 500 hours and 24 surpassing 1k hours. Fine-tuning existing ASR models on WorldSpeech results in an average relative Word-Error-Rate reduction of 63.5% across 11 typologically diverse languages.

PolySpeech-100: A Large-Scale Benchmark for Speech Understanding Across 100+ Languages and Dialects

While End-to-End (E2E) Speech-Large Language Models (Speech-LLMs) are rapidly evolving, their evaluation methodologies remain limited to the era of simple transcription. Existing benchmarks suffer from three critical limitations: a pronounced bias towards high-resource languages, a focus on low-level recognition (ASR) rather than semantic reasoning, and a neglect of regional dialects. To bridge this gap, we introduce PolySpeech-100, a massive-scale benchmark designed to assess `native-level' speech comprehension across 110 linguistic variants. We employ a novel hybrid construction pipeline that augments gold-standard human recordings with instruction-driven synthetic speech, allowing us to cover 19 distinct Chinese dialects and over 80 low-resource languages. Extensive evaluation of 22 state-of-the-art models (including Gemini-3, GPT-Audio, and Qwen2.5-Omni) yields pivotal insights. First, we demonstrate that open-source E2E models outperform Cascade (ASR+LLM) systems on heavy dialects, proving that direct audio processing preserves critical paralinguistic cues and prosodic features (e.g., intonation, stress) that are often lost in standard transcription. Second, we reveal a significant performance gap: while commercial models maintain robustness, open-source models suffer catastrophic degradation on low-resource languages. Finally, counter-intuitively, we observe that under standard zero-shot settings, Chain-of-Thought prompting frequently degrades speech understanding performance for most evaluated models, revealing a potential modality alignment gap in current architectures. PolySpeech-100 establishes a rigorous standard for the next generation of inclusive, omni-capable Speech-LLMs. The data, demo, and code are publicly available at https://github.com/YoungSeng/PolySpeech-100.

GigaAM Multilingual: Foundation Model for Underrepresented Languages

Despite recent scaling successes, multilingual ASR performance remains highly uneven, with long-tail languages suffering from severe data scarcity. This work addresses the challenge of building robust foundation models for underrepresented Central Asian languages (Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Uzbek). We present GigaAM Multilingual, a Conformer encoder pre-trained on 2M hours of audio using a HuBERT-style objective. Crucially, we introduce a cluster-level data balancing strategy during pre-training and a domain-aware sampling method during fine-tuning to mitigate head-language dominance. In controlled comparisons, our approach outperforms strong open pretrained encoders (Whisper Large v3, Omnilingual-1B) on target languages, achieving significant gains on spontaneous speech while maintaining efficiency. We release the foundation encoder and ASR model, offering a proven recipe for effective multilingual adaptation under realistic data imbalance.
