Abstract

LeJEPA derives an isotropic Gaussian embedding target by minimizing, under its task assumptions, a Fisher information criterion that controls the task-averaged squared prediction bias. This enables unimodal self-supervised learning without reconstruction decoders, exponential-moving-average teachers, or contrastive negatives. However, its isotropic task prior does not account for the cross-modal structure of multimodal tasks that read shared content. We introduce MM-LeJEPA by extending LeJEPA's task assumptions to multimodal learning. Specifically, we model multimodal tasks as strength-weighted combinations of components that read independent information from the two modalities and components that read the same content from both. Under explicit gradient-moment, correspondence, and symmetry assumptions, we derive a correlated Gaussian target that minimizes a weighted Fisher information functional under a fixed total variance constraint. An analytic transform adapts Sketched Isotropic Gaussian Regularization (SIGReg) to this target, yielding a two-term objective that combines distributional regularization with local-to-global prediction. The extension adds a single scalar hyperparameter, the target cross-modal correlation, and retains the simplicity of LeJEPA. On public audio-visual classification benchmarks, our results are competitive with representative open-source methods. Code will be released.

UR-JEPA: Uniform Rectifiability as a Regularizer for Joint-Embedding Predictive Architectures

A central difficulty in training Joint-Embedding Predictive Architectures (JEPAs) is preventing representation collapse. LeJEPA addresses this by enforcing an isotropic Gaussian target on the embeddings via Sketched Isotropic Gaussian Regularization (SIGReg). This target is in tension with the manifold hypothesis, which expects embeddings to concentrate on a low-dimensional subset of the ambient space. We propose UR-JEPA, which targets a uniformly nn-rectifiable measure of local tangent dimension nn at small scales, realized through a Gaussian-kernel smoothed Carleson-type square function LCGLT\mathcal{L}^{\text{CGLT}}, with a complementary Jones ββ-number formulation. On Inet10, UR-JEPA(LCGLT\mathcal{L}^{\text{CGLT}}) attains 0.9141±0.00140.9141 \pm 0.0014 for a +0.83+0.83,pp gain over LeJEPA(LSIGReg\mathcal{L}^{\text{SIGReg}}) with ∼30%\sim 30\% lower seed standard deviation; on matched-recipe Galaxy10~SDSS, a single-seed ImageNet-100100 run, and a 33-seed EuroSAT remote-sensing run, the two methods lie in the same peak-accuracy band at convergence, with UR-JEPA retaining its lower-seed-variance signature. On EuroSAT the in-domain pair is competitive at 96.096.0 to 96.1%96.1\% with large remote-sensing foundation-model transfer at a 25×25\times smaller backbone. The distinction is geometric: direct visualization of the projector output distribution shows that on all four datasets UR--JEPA(LCGLT\mathcal{L}^{\text{CGLT}}) produces a global PCA spectrum with a 44 to 55 order-of-magnitude drop at index ∼20\sim 20 to 2525 out of D=32D = 32, while LeJEPA's spectrum is near-flat (top-to-bottom ratio at most 3.63.6). Per-dimension marginals are simultaneously near-Gaussian for both methods (mean Shapiro-Wilk W∈[0.992,0.996]W \in [0.992, 0.996]) as a Diaconis-Freedman consequence. At matched accuracy the two regularizers therefore yield structurally distinct projected representations.

MJEPA: A Simple and Scalable Joint-Embedding Predictive Architecture for Audio-Visual Learning

Self-supervised learning from large-scale video data has emerged as a dominant paradigm for visual representation learning. Since audio and visual streams naturally co-occur in video data, extending this success to jointly learn from both modalities is a natural next step, yet it remains challenging. Existing audio-visual self-supervised methods rely on modality-specific encoders and complex combinations of contrastive or reconstruction objectives, limiting cross-modal synergy and scalability. Joint Embedding Predictive Architectures (JEPAs) offer a simple, modality-agnostic alternative, but have to date been applied primarily to individual modalities. We introduce MJEPA, a joint-embedding predictive architecture for audio-visual learning that uses a single, unified encoder for both modalities. Our approach uses only a single predictive objective, applied both within and across modalities. We show that cross-modal prediction is critical: without it, a shared encoder degrades below unimodal baselines; with it, each modality's representation benefits from the other. Our frozen ViT-g model outperforms the best prior frozen baseline by over 6.8 mAP on AudioSet-20K, surpasses fully finetuned models on ESC-50 and FSD50K, and is competitive on video benchmarks despite using 10x less video data.

LeAVJEPA: A Minimalist Architecture for Audio-Visual Self-Supervised Learning

Prior audio-visual self-supervised learning methods rely on mechanisms such as EMA target encoders, prediction heads, reconstruction decoders, and contrastive losses. We introduce LeAVJEPA, the first audio-visual encoder trained under LeJEPA's collapse-free objective. A single early-fusion Vision Transformer processes audio, video, and joint audio-video inputs. Modality dropout treats a missing modality as another view of the same event, making cross-modal alignment implicit in the objective. The model aligns global embeddings with modality-specific local embeddings, and SIGReg prevents representational collapse. A controlled ablation identifies modality dropout as the key mechanism for audio-visual alignment. Despite the architectural simplicity, LeAVJEPA reaches 36.0 mAP on AudioSet-20K and 91.3% accuracy on ESC-50 under frozen evaluation. After fine-tuning, it reaches 61.1% accuracy on VGGSound, and its embeddings support zero-shot audio-visual retrieval.
