Abstract

Dense temporal audio-visual captioning is important for multimodal video understanding and generation. However, prior work is constrained by three main limitations: (1) the lack of a dataset combining high temporal resolution, longer videos, and bidirectional alignment between time and events; (2) the reliance of most existing RL methods on checklists; and (3) the lack of a benchmark that bidirectionally evaluates event semantic correctness and temporal accuracy. To address these challenges, we propose: (1) AVTime-50K, a high-quality 50K-scale dataset with temporally precise, semantically accurate captions and longer videos; (2) AVTime, a state-of-the-art model optimized with a novel Bidirectional Temporal-Semantic Alignment (BiTSA) reward that imposes explicit bidirectional constraints between time and events; and (3) AVTime-Bench, a specialized benchmark that introduces a novel bidirectional evaluation of temporal accuracy and semantic correctness. Temporal and Cross-Modal Alignment for Enhanced Audiovisual Video Captioning

While Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have advanced video understanding, achieving precise temporal and cross-modal alignment in audiovisual video captioning remains a formidable challenge. Most existing approaches suffer from modality detachment and temporal incoherence, failing to accurately bind auditory events to visual entities or capture complex causal dynamics. To address these deficiencies, we propose TCA-Captioner, a framework specifically engineered to enhance Temporal and Cross-Modal Alignment for audiovisual video captioning. We first introduce the Observer-Checker-Corrector (OCC) framework, an iterative refinement strategy that generates high-fidelity, meticulously grounded training data. Leveraging a curated high-density human interaction dataset, TCA-Captioner is optimized to model sophisticated audiovisual interactions. Furthermore, we present TCA-Bench, a diagnostic benchmark utilizing a Decoupled Evaluation Protocol to isolate and quantify model proficiency in audiovisual binding and temporal relational reasoning. Extensive experiments demonstrate that TCA-Captioner sets a new standard for temporally-coherent and synchronized audiovisual narratives.

AVCap: Reinforcing Audio-Video Joint Caption with Detail-Aware Reward

Detailed audio-video joint captioning is essential for multimodal video understanding and generation. However, prior works are constrained by three main limitations: (1) the scarcity of high-quality public datasets with fine-grained audio-visual joint captions; (2) reinforcement-learning methods that rely on coarse reward signals; and (3) the lack of a benchmark and metric for evaluating detailed audiovisual captions at the atomic level. To address these challenges, we propose: (1) AVCap-100K, a high-quality dataset of 100K temporally aligned, detail-rich audio-video captions; (2) AVCap, a model optimized via Detail-Aware GRPO (Da-GRPO) that achieves state-of-the-art performance among open-source models and matches or surpasses proprietary models on several evaluations; and (3) AVCap-Bench and AVCap-Score, a specialized benchmark and metric for evaluating atomic-level details in audiovisual captions. TimeChat-Captioner: Scripting Multi-Scene Videos with Time-Aware and Structural Audio-Visual Captions

This paper proposes Omni Dense Captioning, a novel task designed to generate continuous, fine-grained, and structured audio-visual narratives with explicit timestamps. To ensure dense semantic coverage, we introduce a six-dimensional structural schema to create "script-like" captions, enabling readers to vividly imagine the video content scene by scene, akin to a cinematographic screenplay. To facilitate research, we construct OmniDCBench, a high-quality, human-annotated benchmark, and propose SodaM, a unified metric that evaluates time-aware detailed descriptions while mitigating scene boundary ambiguity. Furthermore, we construct a training dataset, TimeChatCap-42K, and present TimeChat-Captioner-7B, a strong baseline trained via SFT and GRPO with task-specific rewards. Extensive experiments demonstrate that TimeChat-Captioner-7B achieves state-of-the-art performance, surpassing Gemini-2.5-Pro, while its generated dense descriptions significantly boost downstream capabilities in audio-visual reasoning (DailyOmni and WorldSense) and temporal grounding (Charades-STA).
