Abstract

Content caching via unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) becomes one of the solutions to maintain content delivery when terrestrial infrastructure is unavailable or disrupted. However, existing caching approaches often focus primarily on cache-hit performance or average delivery delay, without jointly addressing spatially heterogeneous and time-varying demand, content-specific deadlines, and uneven communication-energy consumption across UAVs. To address these challenges, we formulate a dynamic deadline- and energy-aware cache placement and replacement problem that jointly considers deadline misses, UAV-side communication energy, and inter-UAV energy imbalance. To achieve this, we first develop deadline- and energy-aware UBAC (DE-UBAC), an interpretable hierarchical rule-based realization that incorporates deadline-aware prioritization, cooperative placement, energy-aware coordination, and cache-update cost. However, predefined priorities and thresholds limit its adaptability under dynamically coupled network conditions. We therefore propose GRU-assisted Deadline- and Energy-aware Proximal Policy Optimization (GRU-DEPPO), which combines local and global GRU-based temporal representations with a centralized PPO actor-critic for adaptive cache placement and replacement. Simulation results show that GRU-DEPPO achieves the lowest deadline-miss rate and total UAV-side communication energy among the considered schemes. Compared with DE-UBAC, GRU-DEPPO reduces the deadline-miss rate by approximately 61% and inter-UAV energy imbalance by approximately 40%.

MA-HEAD-Net: Adaptive Rule-Guided Multi-Agent DRL for AoI Minimization in UAV-Assisted Emergency Networks

In post-disaster scenarios, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are critical for establishing emergency communication networks. For time-critical rescue missions, information freshness is crucial because decisions based on outdated data may lead to ineffective control actions. This paper investigates age of information (AoI) minimization for UAV-assisted emergency communications with heterogeneous emergency services. We model bursty packet arrivals using a Markov-modulated Poisson process and adopt finite blocklength theory to capture the coupling among transmission duration, packet completion, and AoI evolution. To balance delay-tolerant long-packet transmission and urgent short-packet response, we propose a mini-slot-embedded scheduling mechanism with adaptive checkpoint-interval selection. We formulate the joint optimization of UAV trajectory control, user scheduling, and checkpoint-interval selection as a multi-agent decision problem, and develop MA-HEAD-Net, an adaptive rule-guided multi-agent deep reinforcement learning framework. MA-HEAD-Net incorporates communication-domain rule priors into a gated multi-head policy, where adaptive gates regulate the contributions of rule-prior and learned-policy logits for different subtasks. The policy and gating components are jointly optimized under multi-agent proximal policy optimization. Simulation results show that MA-HEAD-Net improves policy-formation efficiency compared with representative multi-agent deep reinforcement learning baselines and achieves lower AoI than both learning-based and heuristic methods in dynamic UAV-assisted emergency communication scenarios.

Robust Energy-Aware Routing for Air-Ground Cooperative Multi-UAV Delivery in Wind-Uncertain Environments

Ensuring energy feasibility under wind uncertainty is critical for the safety and reliability of UAV delivery missions. In realistic truck-drone logistics systems, UAVs must deliver parcels and safely return under time-varying wind conditions that are only partially observable during flight. However, most existing routing approaches assume static or deterministic energy models, making them unreliable in dynamic wind environments. We propose Battery-Efficient Routing (BER), an online risk-sensitive planning framework for wind-sensitive truck-assisted UAV delivery. The problem is formulated as routing on a time dependent energy graph whose edge costs evolve according to wind-induced aerodynamic effects. BER continuously evaluates return feasibility while balancing instantaneous energy expenditure and uncertainty-aware risk. The approach is embedded in a hierarchical aerial-ground delivery architecture that combines task allocation, routing, and decentralized trajectory execution. Extensive simulations on synthetic ER graphs generated in Unreal Engine environments and quasi-real wind logs demonstrate that BER significantly improves mission success rates and reduces wind-induced failures compared with static and greedy baselines. These results highlight the importance of integrating real-time energy budgeting and environmental awareness for UAV delivery planning under dynamic wind conditions.

Threat-Aware Energy-Efficient Deployment for Dynamic UAV Networks: A Multi-Agent RL Approach

Ensuring operational safety in threat-prone environments remains a critical challenge for multi-UAV networks serving as aerial base stations. This paper proposes an efficient framework to maximize global energy efficiency (EE) while promoting safe operation through threat-aware clustering and reward-based safety enforcement. The proposed framework is executed in three steps. First, a threat-aware K-means (TAKM) algorithm determines the minimum required UAVs and computes safe initial placements. Second, an optimal matching stage assigns physical UAVs to these centroids to minimize energy expenditure. Third, a threat-aware multi-agent twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (MATD3) algorithm dynamically optimizes trajectories, power, and user associations. Simulation results show that the proposed framework achieves zero observed safety violations in the considered scenarios while achieving superior EE and faster convergence than other learning methods and non-clustering baselines. Compared to heuristic optimization, the proposed framework outperforms the greedy particle swarm optimization (GPSO) and achieves performance comparable to that of the optimized PSO (OPSO), while incurring significantly lower online deployment computational complexity. Furthermore, the proposed framework demonstrates effective generalization to unseen user distributions, large UAV fleets, and different threat geometries, while maintaining zero safety violations.
