Abstract

In this work, we propose a movable-element (ME) multi-functional reconfigurable intelligent surface (MF-RIS) architecture, termed MM-RIS, which integrates element mobility with adaptive signal reflection, transmission, amplification, and energy harvesting (EH) to enhance communication flexibility and energy self-sustainability. A hybrid rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) transmission scheme is further designed to improve spectral efficiency. We formulate an energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem by jointly optimizing transmit beamforming, power and rate allocation, MM-RIS configurations, panel deployment, and ME positions. To address the resulting non-convex mixed continuous-discrete optimization problem, we propose constrained hybrid deep reinforcement learning with federated transformer and parametrized sharing (CRAFTS). CRAFTS integrates multi-agent proximal policy optimization (MAPPO) and multi-agent deep Q-networks (MADQN) through bi-directional parametrized sharing to handle continuous and discrete actions, respectively. Moreover, a transformer-based architecture and federated learning (FL) are incorporated to enhance state representation and distributed knowledge sharing, whilst a Lagrangian-based adaptive penalty mechanism facilitates the constraint satisfaction. Simulation results have demonstrated that the proposed MM-RIS architecture and CRAFTS framework substantially improve EE and constraint satisfaction compared to the benchmarks in the open literature. Moreover, the results validate the benefits of spatially reconfigurable MM-RIS, hybrid RSMA-NOMA transmissions, and intelligent collaborative learning, highlighting the potential of the proposed framework for energy-efficient and adaptive next-generation wireless networks.

Aerial Multi-Functional RIS in Fluid Antennas-Aided Full-Duplex Networks: A Self-Optimized Hybrid Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach

To address high data traffic demands of sixth-generation (6G) networks, this paper proposes a novel architecture that integrates autonomous aerial vehicles (AAVs) and multi-functional reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (MF-RISs) as AM-RIS in fluid antenna (FA)-assisted full-duplex (FD) networks. The AM-RIS provides hybrid functionalities, including signal reflection, amplification, and energy harvesting (EH), potentially improving both signal coverage and sustainability. Meanwhile, FA facilitates fine-grained spatial adaptability at FD-enabled base station (BS), which complements residual self-interference (SI) suppression. We aim at maximizing the overall energy efficiency (EE) by jointly optimizing transmit DL beamforming at BS, UL user power, configuration of AM-RIS, and positions of the FA and AM-RIS. Owing to the hybrid continuous-discrete parameters and high dimensionality of the intractable problem, we have conceived a self-optimized multi-agent hybrid deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework (SOHRL), which integrates multi-agent deep Q-networks (DQN) and multi-agent proximal policy optimization (PPO), respectively handling discrete and continuous actions. To enhance self-adaptability, an attention-driven state representation and meta-level hyperparameter optimization are incorporated, enabling multi-agents to autonomously adjust learning hyperparameters. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed AM-RIS-enabled FA-aided FD networks empowered by SOHRL algorithm. The results reveal that SOHRL outperforms benchmarks of the case without attention mechanism and conventional hybrid/multi-agent/standalone DRL. Moreover, AM-RIS in FD achieves the highest EE compared to half-duplex, conventional rigid antenna arrays, partial EH, and conventional RIS without amplification, highlighting its potential as a compelling solution for EE-aware wireless networks.

Active Sensing for RIS-Aided Tracking and Power Control: A Hybrid Neuroevolution and Supervised Learning Approach

This paper studies energy efficient tracking of power-limited mobile users with the assistance of a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS). Since localization pilot transmissions dominate the energy budget of power-constrained devices, we introduce a low-overhead feedback link from the Base Station (BS) to the user to enable dynamic uplink power control. To navigate the discrete and decentralized nature of this active sensing problem, we propose a novel Dual-Agent (DA) deep learning framework that jointly optimizes the discrete RIS phase profiles and the UE's transmit power in real time. Specifically, our approach employs a hybrid training methodology integrating the neuroevolution paradigm with supervised learning, effectively overcoming the non-differentiability of discrete phase responses from the RIS unit elements and the strict information bottleneck of single-bit feedback messages for pilot power control. The proposed DA active sensing framework can be applied with both single- and multi-antenna BSs, the latter with only minor modifications in the structure of one NN: an additional output branch with appropriate structure is included for the latter case to select a valid digital combiner from a finite set. Extensive numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves highly accurate and robust tracking across diverse target motion models, outperforming extended Kalman and particle filters, as well as, machine learning-based trackers. Furthermore, in static localization, it is shown to significantly outperform traditional fingerprinting schemes, deep reinforcement learning baselines, and standard backpropagation-based estimators.

Trustworthy AI-Driven Dynamic Hybrid RIS: Joint Optimization and Reward Poisoning-Resilient Control in Cognitive MISO Networks

Cognitive radio networks (CRNs) are a key mechanism for alleviating spectrum scarcity by enabling secondary users (SUs) to opportunistically access licensed frequency bands without harmful interference to primary users (PUs). To address unreliable direct SU links and energy constraints common in next-generation wireless networks, this work introduces an adaptive, energy-aware hybrid reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) for underlay multiple-input single-output (MISO) CRNs. Distinct from prior approaches relying on static RIS architectures, our proposed RIS dynamically alternates between passive and active operation modes in real time according to harvested energy availability. We also model our scenario under practical hardware impairments and cascaded fading channels. We formulate and solve a joint transmit beamforming and RIS phase optimization problem via the soft actor-critic (SAC) deep reinforcement learning (DRL) method, leveraging its robustness in continuous and highly dynamic environments. Notably, we conduct the first systematic study of reward poisoning attacks on DRL agents in RIS-enhanced CRNs, and propose a lightweight, real-time defense based on reward clipping and statistical anomaly filtering. Numerical results demonstrate that the SAC-based approach consistently outperforms established DRL baselines, and that the dynamic hybrid RIS strikes a superior trade-off between throughput and energy consumption compared to fully passive and fully active alternatives. We further show the effectiveness of our defense in maintaining SU performance even under adversarial conditions. Our results advance the practical and secure deployment of RIS-assisted CRNs, and highlight crucial design insights for energy-constrained wireless systems.
