When the Persona Contradicts the Line: Diagnosing Plan-to-Synthesis Failures in Chain-of-Thought TTS

Abstract

Chain-of-thought TTS systems rely on language-model planners to translate persona and context into vocal delivery, but it is unclear where this intent is lost when the requested affect conflicts with lexical sentiment. We introduce a bilingual Japanese--English persona--line conflict benchmark in which each item pairs one line with congruent and conflicting personas and pre-declares the expected acoustic direction. We probe this direction in the planner-generated delivery phrase, the planner-written emotion vector, the QwenEmotion-generated vector, and the rendered waveform. Planner outputs are usually direction-correct, while downstream agreement can be substantially lower. Bypassing QwenEmotion provides only modest gains over the full planner-controlled Base. Supervising QwenEmotion raises the direction rate to 75% in Japanese and 84% in English. A learned text-to-latent interface reaches the highest English rate of 89% and the highest Japanese arousal rate of 88%. These results show that learned repair of the plan-to-synthesis interface can recover counter-textual delivery, although its effect differs across languages and acoustic axes.

ISCSLP 2026 CoT-TTS Challenge: Chain-of-Thought Reasoning for Context-Aware Text-to-Speech

Recent advances in text-to-speech (TTS) have greatly improved speech naturalness, speaker similarity, and controllability. However, most existing controllable TTS systems still rely on explicit user-provided style prompts, making it difficult to automatically determine how a sentence should be spoken in long and complex conversational scenarios. This proposal introduces the ISCSLP 2026 CoT-TTS Challenge, which aims to evaluate whether a system can infer the intended speaking manner from contextual information and generate speech consistent with both the reasoning output and the surrounding scene. The challenge contains two tracks: text-context-aware CoT-TTS and audio-context-aware CoT-TTS. We construct a large-scale bilingual training set from speech-rich media and provide carefully filtered evaluation data for leaderboard comparison. Each system is required to output both a chain-of-thought reasoning analysis and the generated speech waveform. The official evaluation combines objective metrics, multimodal LLM-based evaluation, and human subjective assessment. To facilitate reproducibility, we provide inference code together with a fine-tuning recipe for a 0.6B Qwen3-based model trained via a three-stage strategy. This challenge is expected to support research on context understanding, chain-of-thought reasoning, and expressive speech generation for applications such as film dubbing, audiobook production, virtual characters, and spoken dialogue agents. Self-EmoQ: Plutchik-Guided Value-based Planning to Drive Streaming Emotional TTS

Emotional interaction is increasingly crucial for conversational AI, yet current systems lack a self-emotion determination mechanism to drive the streaming text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis. We propose an emotion-planning framework that determines the emotion prior to the textual generation, grounding the downstream emotional TTS in a streaming manner. The framework is implemented by a plug-and-play LLM module, initialized from pretrained LLMs, and trained by reinforcement learning (RL) with emotions as the actions. A hybrid reward is employed which combines imitation signals with theory-driven scoring, in which the theory of Plutchik's wheel of emotions is adopted. By experiments on DailyDialog, EmoryNLP, IMEOCAP, and MELD, our method outperforms prompting and finetuning baselines on both emotion determination and response quality. We finally implement an entire streaming pipeline for real-time deployment, with the speech quality confirming the framework's emotional alignment, contextual coherence, and expressive fluency. COT-TTS: Audio Context-Aware Text-to-Speech with Chain-of-Thought Reasoning

Recently, text-to-speech systems have made significant progress in speech expressiveness and controllability. However, the speaking style of generated speech typically relies on clear user-specified instructions. In natural conversations, speaking style should be naturally inferred from the preceding conversational context. Therefore, we propose COT-TTS, a context-aware, reasoning-based text-to-speech task. Given historical conversation audio, target text, and a reference speech, the system should comprehend the conversational context, infer an explicit intermediate reasoning, and finally synthesize the target speech with the specified timbre. To support this task, we constructed a large-scale bilingual conversational speech dataset comprising 9 million training samples, including a high-quality subset of 1 million samples. We further constructed a source-disjoint benchmark with 800 human-verified samples and established strong task-specific baselines. Additionally, we developed end-to-end autoregressive models with parameter sizes of 0.6B and 1.7B, generating emotion-labeled transcripts, editable speech style inferences, and speech tokens. Experimental results show that the proposed model achieves performance comparable to large-scale baseline systems with significantly fewer parameters. At the same time, the model performs well in terms of duration consistency and emotional consistency, and can generate appropriate emotional, stress, and rhythmic variations based on the conversational context. To facilitate future research, we will publicly release the data construction pipeline, dataset, trained models, and related resources.
