Abstract

Synthetic supervision can bootstrap semantic parsers in new search domains, but prompt-induced diversity is useful only when generations are faithful to the structured intent. We explore this for cold-start e-commerce search: 118,098 synthetic pairs produced by 6 LLMs with 9 persona-conditioned prompt families on a 47-field UK automotive schema, against 1,214 human-annotated and 15,304 production queries. We show that the IPIP personality bundle improves parser F1 in all four matched contrasts (Holm-corrected p<.001p<.001), and all three bundles have a positive main effect over the complete 232^3 grid. Syntax conditioning is the axis that moves generations towards real traffic. It also induces lexical diversity. Alignment sKL, the divergence between von Mises-Fisher distributions fitted to synthetic and human-annotated queries, is an unlabelled proxy for parser F1 (ρ=−0.917ρ=-0.917 against human queries written for simulated shopper scenarios, lower is closer). An LLM committee, checked against a blinded author pass, triages the 927 queries missed by every parser and labels 37% as hallucinated. Dropped constraints dominate. The four syntax-bearing families have the largest hallucinated shares, 38 to 42%, while IPIP alone has the lowest at 28%.

Demand-Side Measurement for Generative Engine Optimization: Constructing and Validating a Million-Persona, Intent-Annotated Buyer Corpus

Generative engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity answer buyer questions directly and name a shortlist of brands inside the answer. Studying how brands enter or fail to enter that shortlist requires demand-side data: what buyers in a category ask, what information they need, and which sources they trust. Existing large persona corpora are built for training-data diversity and carry neither a staged search-intent label nor a preferred-sources field, so they cannot be joined to supply-side recommendation measurements. We built and validated PersonaGen-1M, a corpus of 1,031,732 synthetic buyer personas spanning 511 industry labels and 4 market contexts, carrying 19,416,821 structured behavioral attributes, 5,160,046 of them search queries. Each persona carries a single primary_intent label covering its query set (78.3% informational, 17.4% commercial, 4.3% transactional) and a preferred_sources field naming the source types that buyer would trust. The corpus was built from roughly 40 million raw persona descriptions drawn from four public datasets through GPU-accelerated MinHash LSH plus semantic deduplication, then enriched to a fixed schema. The intent field selects the commercial-evaluation personas whose queries drive recommendation, and the preferred_sources field pairs against citation-provenance data; that join is the primary intended use, and its controlled empirical estimate is future work. Among million-scale persona corpora surveyed in August 2026, one other carries a source-preference attribute, as a six-value media-channel enum; PersonaGen-1M pairs named per-persona source lists with a staged commercial search-intent label and an attached query set. The full corpus is shared on request for non-commercial research; a stratified subset is published openly so the protocol, the schema and the validation can be inspected and reused without asking us.

Beyond Relevance: Structured Semantic Supervision for Product Search with LLM-Augmented Annotations

E-commerce search requires distinguishing products that are merely related to a query from those that directly satisfy the user's shopping intent. We augment query-product pairs with structured LLM-generated query and product attributes and human-validated relevance, explanations, and centrality judgments, and evaluate these signals using a simple dual-encoder retriever and MLP re-ranker. On an augmented subset of ESCI, a human-feature oracle reaches 0.93820.9382 nDCG@10, while a human-free trained Q+PQ+P configuration reaches 0.92580.9258. Synthetic approximations of the human signals reach 0.91500.9150 overall but provide substantial gains for difficult, low-performing queries. Ablations show that most of the oracle improvement comes from post-edited explanations and annotator comments rather than the scalar centrality feature, suggesting that LLMs are most useful for exposing and approximating structured semantic supervision rather than replacing human judgment directly.

SimPersona: Learning Discrete Buyer Personas from Raw Clickstreams for Grounded E-Commerce Agents

LLM-based web agents can navigate live storefronts, yet they often collapse to a single "average buyer" policy, failing to capture the heterogeneous and distributional nature of real buyer populations. Existing personalization methods rely on hand-crafted prompt-based personas that are brittle, difficult to scale, context-inefficient, and unable to faithfully represent population-level behavior. We introduce SimPersona, a novel framework that learns discrete buyer types from historical traffic and exposes them to LLM-based web agents as compact persona tokens. Given raw clickstreams, a behavior-aware VQ-VAE induces a discrete buyer-type space that captures the statistical structure of real buyer behavior and merchant-specific buyer population distributions. To provide behavior-specific guidance to LLM-based web agents, SimPersona maps each learned buyer type to a dedicated persona token in the LLM agent vocabulary and fine-tunes the agent with these tokens on real browsing traces. At inference, each synthetic buyer is assigned to a learned buyer type with a single encoder forward pass, requiring no retraining or store-specific prompt engineering. For population-level simulation, SimPersona samples buyer types from each merchant's empirical distribution over the learned VQ-VAE codebook and instantiates agents with the corresponding persona tokens, preserving merchant-specific buyer population distributions. Evaluated on 8.378.37M buyers across 4242 held-out live storefronts, SimPersona achieves 78%78\% conversion-rate alignment with real buyers, exhibits interpretable behavioral variation across buyer types, and outperforms a baseline with 8×8\times more parameters on goal-oriented shopping tasks. We further release an open-source data pipeline that converts raw e-commerce event logs into buyer representations and agent-training traces.
