Abstract

Quantifying degradation between a pristine signal and its degraded observation is fundamental to signal processing, yet existing full-reference measures are inherently modality-specific. We introduce SymKL, a unified full-reference degradation measure based on implicit neural representations (INRs). An INR is fitted once to the pristine reference and characterized by its diagonal Fisher information, which captures the local information geometry of the learned representation. Evaluating the Fisher information with the pristine reference and a degraded observation yields two parameter-sensitivity profiles whose symmetric KL divergence defines the degradation score. The proposed formulation requires only the reference and degraded observation, without knowledge of the corruption process or degradation severity, making it applicable across images, audio, and 3D data. We further derive an exact closed-form expression for the diagonal Fisher of SIREN, enabling efficient computation. Experiments on image, speech, and volumetric 3D benchmarks demonstrate that SymKL accurately tracks degradation severity, remains monotonic where conventional metrics saturate or fail, and provides a unified modality-agnostic measure of signal degradation. Code will be made publicly available after the review process.

Simpler and Stronger Baselines for All-in-One Image Restoration

Current methods for all-in-one image restoration increasingly rely on complex mechanisms, such as Mixture-of-Experts or prompt learning, to handle diverse degradations. In this work, we challenge this trend by showing that structural symmetry provides a strong and effective inductive bias, which is often sufficient to support high-quality restoration in many practical settings. We propose SymUNet, a minimalist baseline that enforces strict encoder-decoder alignment via simple additive fusion, which outperforms complex state-of-the-art models on standard benchmarks while significantly reducing computational costs. Furthermore, to address the negative transfer observed in highly diverse degradation scenarios (e.g., 5-task settings), we introduce SE-SymUNet, which leverages frozen semantic priors (CLIP) to disentangle conflicting restoration tasks. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach establishes a simpler, stronger, and more efficient foundation for multi-degradation learning.

Causal Disentanglement-Inspired Degradation Representation Learning for Full-Reference Image Quality Assessment

Existing deep network-based full-reference image quality assessment (FR-IQA) models typically work by performing pairwise comparisons of deep features from the reference and distorted images. In this paper, we approach this problem from a different perspective and propose a novel FR-IQA paradigm based on causal inference and decoupled representation learning. Unlike typical feature comparison-based FR-IQA models, our approach formulates degradation estimation as a causal disentanglement process guided by intervention on latent representations. We first decouple degradation and content representations by exploiting the content invariance between the reference and distorted images. Second, inspired by the human visual masking effect, we design a masking module to model the causal relationship between image content and degradation features, thereby extracting content-influenced degradation features from distorted images. Finally, quality scores are predicted from these degradation features using either supervised regression or label-free dimensionality reduction. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves highly competitive performance on standard IQA benchmarks across fully supervised, few-label, and label-free settings. Furthermore, we evaluate the approach on diverse non-standard natural image domains with scarce data, including underwater, radiographic, medical, neutron, and screen-content images. Benefiting from its ability to perform scenario-specific training and prediction without labeled IQA data, our method exhibits superior cross-domain generalization compared to existing training-free FR-IQA models.

SLER-IR: Spherical Layer-wise Expert Routing for All-in-One Image Restoration

Image restoration under diverse degradations remains challenging for unified all-in-one frameworks due to feature interference and insufficient expert specialization. We propose SLER-IR, a spherical layer-wise expert routing framework that dynamically activates specialized experts across network layers. To ensure reliable routing, we introduce a Spherical Uniform Degradation Embedding with contrastive learning, which maps degradation representations onto a hypersphere to eliminate geometry bias in linear embedding spaces. In addition, a Global-Local Granularity Fusion (GLGF) module integrates global semantics and local degradation cues to address spatially non-uniform degradations and the train-test granularity gap. Experiments on three-task and five-task benchmarks demonstrate that SLER-IR achieves consistent improvements over state-of-the-art methods in both PSNR and SSIM. Code and models will be publicly released.
