HDR Imaging

HDR: High Dynamic Range

Overview

High dynamic range (HDR) imaging represents a wider range of scene luminance than a standard image can encode, supporting faithful viewing, measurement, and vision in difficult lighting. Common approaches combine bracketed exposures through alignment and deghosting, infer missing radiance from a single low-dynamic-range image using inverse tone mapping or diffusion priors, or use event, raw, and spatially varying exposure sensors. Work also extends to HDR video and 3D radiance fields, where motion, view consistency, and lighting estimation matter, with quality assessed through radiometric, perceptual, and task-specific benchmarks. A central challenge is recovering clipped or noisy detail without inventing content, while preserving temporal consistency and keeping capture and inference efficient.
