Overview

Inverse optimal transport asks what costs or model parameters would make observed flows, couplings, or distribution changes optimal. Common approaches use entropic transport and differentiable Sinkhorn solvers, feature-parameterized costs, neural transport maps, or losses derived from optimality gaps; partial and multi-marginal formulations handle rejection and richer relationships. Applications include inferring travel costs from origin–destination flows, predicting cell responses to perturbations, and learning representations from contrastive data. A central challenge is identifiability: estimates need stability guarantees and careful treatment of model misspecification, while remaining computationally tractable on large or incomplete datasets.
