Material Point Method
Overview
The Material Point Method represents a material with moving points that carry mass and physical state, while a background grid computes forces and updates motion. Researchers extend it with differentiable solvers for learning and control, GPU acceleration, and specialized models for contact, fracture, cutting, and mixtures of materials. Applications include granular and soft-body manipulation, tactile sensing, surgical simulation, and physically based animation, sometimes combining MPM with methods such as position-based dynamics or neural decoders. A central challenge is balancing realistic, robust behavior—especially during contact and failure—with computational speed and reliable gradients for optimization.
