IterCAD: An Iterative Multimodal Agent for Visually-Grounded CAD Generation and Editing

Computer-Aided Design is pivotal in modern manufacturing, yet existing automated methods predominantly rely on open-loop, one-shot generation, creating a mismatch with iterative real-world practices. In this paper, we present IterCAD, a unified multimodal agent framework for closed-loop, interactive CAD generation and editing. We formulate the task as a multi-turn interaction between a multimodal agent and an executable CAD sandbox, covering three tasks: Drawing-to-Code, Text-to-Code, and Interactive Editing. To support this, we develop a data synthesis pipeline incorporating advanced industrial manufacturing features to generate standard-compliant multi-view engineering drawings, complex code-editing tasks, and high-fidelity interaction trajectories. We optimize the agent via progressive SFT followed by geometry-aware reinforcement learning with viable-prefix masking to enhance code executability and geometric fidelity. Finally, we introduce the IterCAD-Bench evaluation suite and propose the Chamfer Distance Tolerance-Recall (CD-TR) curve alongside its AUC-TR metric, establishing a survivor-bias-free standard that unifies code validity and geometric precision. Extensive experiments demonstrate that IterCAD achieves highly competitive performance across multiple benchmarks, significantly outperforming existing approaches in both code executability and geometric precision, while exhibiting superior capabilities in closed-loop iterative refinement.

P3D-Bench: Benchmarking MLLMs for Parametric 3D Generation and Structural Reasoning

Multimodal large language models can write code to produce complex programs as well as use programs to do 3D modeling, which opens up a new avenue for 3D generation powered by their priors, world knowledge and reasoning. Yet existing benchmarks rarely evaluate 3D modeling through code. Such modeling demands more than runnable code: from a text or visual specification, a model must generate a parametric 3D program that is geometrically precise, semantically aligned and assembly-consistent. We introduce P3D-Bench, a benchmark for parametric 3D generation. Unlike a 3D mesh, a parametric 3D program exposes explicit dimensions, construction operations and part relations, revealing whether a model recovers a design's structure, not just its appearance. Under a unified protocol, P3D-Bench covers three task families (Text-to-3D, Image-to-3D and Assembly-3D) and scores each output for executability, geometric fidelity, topology, text-grounded constraints, multiview semantic alignment and part-level structure. We evaluate frontier MLLMs and text-only LLMs on 400 text cases, 400 image cases and 203 annotated assemblies, with domain-specific models as reference points. Our extensive evaluation yields three findings. First, assemblies are the hardest setting, where models still fail to compose multiple parts into a coherent structure. Second, models can often recover the global shape and semantic identity of the target object, yet fail to reproduce the precise parametric geometry specified by the input. Third, part-level modeling remains weak on assemblies, where models recover neither the geometry of each part nor the right number of parts. These results position P3D-Bench as a benchmark for evaluating precise parametric geometry and part-level structure in parametric 3D generation.

GuideCAD: A Lightweight Multimodal Framework for 3D CAD Model Generation via Prefix Embedding

Multi-modal approaches used for 3D CAD generation require substantial computational resources, necessitating efficient training. To address this, we propose GuideCAD, which leverages semantically rich visual-textual representations having only a small number of trainable parameters to generate 3D CAD models. Specifically, GuideCAD uses a mapping network that converts image embeddings into prefix embeddings, enabling a pretrained large language model to integrate visual and textual information. As a result, a transformer-based decoder predicts the construction sequence using the visual-textual embeddings in order to generate the 3D CAD model. For experimental evaluation, we construct a new dataset, referred to as GuideCAD, which consists of text-image pairs. Each pair includes a text prompt that represents a 3D CAD construction sequence and its corresponding 3D CAD image. Our experimental results show that GuideCAD generates comparably high-quality 3D CAD models while using approximately four times fewer parameters and achieving twice the training efficiency compared to fine-tuning approaches. We have released the source code and dataset for our method at: https://github.com/mskimS2/GuideCAD

Text2CAD-Bench: A Benchmark for LLM-based Text-to-Parametric CAD Generation

Text-to-CAD generation aims to create parametric CAD models from natural language, enabling rapid prototyping and intuitive design workflows. However, existing benchmarks focus on basic primitives and simple sketch-extrude sequences, lacking advanced features essential for real-world applications and covering only traditional mechanical parts. We introduce Text2CAD-Bench, the first benchmark systematically evaluating text-to-CAD across geometric complexity and application diversity. Our benchmark comprises 600 human-curated examples spanning four levels: L1-L2 cover fundamental geometry with standard features, L3 introduces complex topology and freeform surfaces, and L4 extends to real-world domains beyond mechanical parts. Each example pairs dual-style prompts -- geometric descriptions mimicking non-expert users, and procedural sequences aligned with expert-level conventions. Evaluating mainstream general LLMs and domain-specific models, we find that current models perform reasonably on basic geometry but degrade substantially on complex topology and advanced features. We release our benchmark to drive progress in text-to-CAD research.

Self-Improving CAD Generation Agents with Finite Element Analysis as Feedback

Computer-aided design (CAD) is the backbone of modern industrial design, yet learned CAD generators still fall short of real engineering pipelines: they neither iterate like engineers nor evaluate what engineering requires. Prior work has treated CAD generation as two disjoint steps, part synthesis and assembly, where the former is graded by proximity to a gold reference and the latter, when handled at all, is reduced to a separate constraint solving step. In this work, we introduce a more industry-native task formulation that requires a model to produce a fully assembled multi-part STEP file from a free-form engineering brief, which is then validated via finite element analysis (FEA). FEA validation reveals that Codex (GPT-5.5) and Claude Code (Opus-4.7) agents do not produce a single strict-passing artifact in the main first-attempt sweep, with the best configuration meeting only about 20% of typed requirements on average. Moreover, we introduce two additional supervision signals, a novel text-only blueprint schema and a 21-view image renderer that aids the agent's visual inspection, that better align the generation loop with how engineers iterate in practice. On S2O and Fusion360, the same feedback tools improve geometric reconstruction, with GPT-5.5/xhigh rising from 0.444 to 0.592 Box-IoU on S2O and from 0.397 to 0.505 on Fusion360. Together these signals move CAD programs toward artifacts that are not only visually plausible but also checked against physical and structural requirements.

Img2CADSeq: Image-to-CAD Generation via Sequence-Based Diffusion

Boundary Representation (BRep) is the standard format for Computer-Aided Design (CAD), yet reconstructing high-quality BReps from single-view images remains challenging due to the complexity of topological constraints and operation sequences. We present Img2CADSeq, a multi-stage pipeline that overcomes these limitations by encoding CAD sequences into a three-level hierarchical codebook. Guided by an importance prioritization, this strategy values profiles over details, compressing long sequences into a stable discrete latent space. To bridge the modality gap, we leverage a coarse-to-fine point cloud intermediate, aligning 2D visual features with 3D CAD sequences via contrastive learning to condition a VQ-Diffusion model. Supported by newly introduced CAD-220K and PrintCAD datasets, our approach ensures robust industrial domain adaptation. Extensive experiments demonstrate that Img2CADSeq significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods, producing standard STEP files that can be directly used in commercial CAD software.

CADBench: A Multimodal Benchmark for AI-Assisted CAD Program Generation

Recovering editable CAD programs from images or 3D observations is central to AI-assisted design, but progress is difficult to measure because existing evaluations are fragmented across datasets, modalities, and metrics. We introduce CADBench, a unified benchmark for multimodal CAD program generation. CADBench contains 18,000 evaluation samples spanning six benchmark families derived from DeepCAD, Fusion 360, ABC, MCB, and Objaverse; five input modalities including clean meshes, noisy meshes, single-view renders, photorealistic renders, and multi-view renders; and six metrics covering geometric fidelity, executability, and program compactness. STEP-based families are stratified by B-rep face count and all families are diversity-sampled to support controlled analysis across complexity and object variation. We benchmark eleven CAD-specialized and general-purpose vision-language systems, generating more than 1.4 million CAD programs. Under idealized inputs, specialized mesh-to-CAD models substantially outperform code-generating VLMs, which remain far from reliable CAD program reconstruction. CADBench further reveals three recurring failure modes: reconstruction quality degrades with geometric complexity, CAD-specialized models can be brittle under modality shift, and model rankings change across metrics. Together, these results position CADBench as a diagnostic testbed for measuring progress in editable 3D reconstruction and multimodal CAD understanding. The benchmark is publicly available at https://github.com/anniedoris/CADBench.

BenchCAD: A Comprehensive, Industry-Standard Benchmark for Programmatic CAD

Industrial Computer-Aided Design (CAD) code generation requires models to produce executable parametric programs from visual or textual inputs. Beyond recognizing the outer shape of a part, this task involves understanding its 3D structure, inferring engineering parameters, and choosing CAD operations that reflect how the part would be designed and manufactured. Despite the promise of Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) for this task, they are rarely evaluated on whether these capabilities jointly hold in realistic industrial CAD settings. We present BenchCAD, a unified benchmark for industrial CAD reasoning. BenchCAD contains 17,900 execution-verified CadQuery programs across 106 industrial part families, including bevel gears, compression springs, twist drills, and other reusable engineering designs. It evaluates models through visual question answering, code question answering, image-to-code generation, and instruction-guided code editing, enabling fine-grained analysis across perception, parametric abstraction, and executable program synthesis. Across 10+ frontier models, BenchCAD shows that current systems often recover coarse outer geometry but fail to produce faithful parametric CAD programs. Common failures include missing fine 3D structure, misinterpreting industrial design parameters, and replacing essential operations such as sweeps, lofts, and twist-extrudes with simpler sketch-and-extrude patterns. Fine-tuning and reinforcement learning improve in-distribution performance, but generalization to unseen part families remains limited. These results position BenchCAD as a benchmark for measuring and improving the industrial readiness of multimodal CAD automation.

Extrusion Segmentation Strategy to improve CAD Reconstruction from Point Cloud

Computer-Aided Design is ubiquitous in todays world, as almost every manufactured object begins as a digital model across industries. At the same time, advances in 3D sensing have made point clouds a dominant form of raw 3D data. Recovering the CAD model of a physical object from its point cloud scan has two major applications: reverse engineering, where physical or hand-crafted prototypes need to be reconstructed automatically as editable digital models, and quality control, where recovering the CAD description of a manufactured object helps quantify and understand deviations introduced during the production process. Thus, converting unordered point clouds into structured CAD models is increasingly important for modern applications. Deep learning has enabled major progress in computer vision for both 2D and 3D data, and new datasets facilitate data-driven CAD reconstruction. Building on this foundation, we develop an end-to-end model that reconstructs CAD models from point clouds and introduce a segmentation approach that decomposes them into individual extrusions. These partial shapes increase data diversity, improving the generalization and robustness of deep learning models. Our strategy thereby provides a simple, yet effective way to increase reconstruction performance of deep learning models.

Computer-Aided Design Generation by Cascaded Discrete Diffusion Model

Recent deep learning approaches seek to automate CAD creation by representing a model as a sequence of discrete commands and parameters, and then generating them using autoregressive models or continuous diffusion operating in Euclidean embedding space. However, continuous diffusion perturbs representations in a continuous Euclidean domain that does not reflect the inherently discrete and heterogeneous nature of CAD tokens, often producing perturbed representations that map to semantically invalid symbols. To overcome this limitation, we propose a cascaded discrete diffusion framework for CAD generation, which consists of a command diffusion for generating CAD commands and a parameter diffusion conditioned on CAD commands. Unlike isotropic Gaussian perturbation, the forward process of our approach operates directly over categorical token distributions using delicate transition matrices. For commands, we adopt an absorbing-state transition matrix that progressively corrupts tokens to a designated symbol; for parameters, we introduce specific transition matrices tailored to heterogeneous attributes: a Gaussian kernel for coordinate continuity, a scale-invariant kernel for dimensional values, and a prior-preserving kernel for boolean attributes. The reverse process is achieved by two denoising networks: a Transformer-based encoder for command recovery, and a parameter network with extra local self-attention for command-level interaction and cross-attention for conditional injection. Experiments on the DeepCAD dataset show that the proposed approach surpasses existing autoregressive and continuous diffusion models on unconditional generation metrics, while qualitative results validate effective controllability in conditional generation tasks. Source codes will be released.

CADFS: A Big CAD Program Dataset and Framework for Computer-Aided Design with Large Language Models

We introduce CADFS, a data-centric framework that enables large vision-language models to generate complex CAD design histories. Existing generative CAD systems are restricted to sketch-extrude operations due to simplified representations and limited datasets. We address this by introducing a FeatureScript-based representation and constructing a dataset of 450k real-world CAD models spanning 15 modeling operations. We obtain the dataset via a new pipeline that reconstructs clean, executable FeatureScript programs and provides multimodal annotations. Fine-tuning a VLM on this representation yields state-of-the-art results in text-conditioned CAD generation and image-based reconstruction, producing more accurate, diverse, and feature-rich designs than prior frameworks. Ablations show that each individual component of our framework, i.e., the FeatureScript representation, the extended operation set, and representation-aligned textual descriptions, significantly improves performance. Our framework substantially broadens the complexity and realism achievable in generative CAD. The CADFS framework and the new dataset are available at https://voyleg.github.io/cadfs/.

CADFit: Precise Mesh-to-CAD Program Generation with Hybrid Optimization

Despite recent progress, recovering parametric CAD construction sequences from geometric input, such as meshes or point clouds, is a key challenge for design and manufacturing, as existing CAD reconstruction and generation methods are largely restricted to difficult-to-edit formats like meshes or Breps or editable simple sketch-and-extrude pipelines and low-complexity datasets. We introduce CADFit, a hybrid optimization-based CAD reconstruction framework that recovers complex, editable CAD construction sequences from meshes by incrementally fitting and validating parametric operations using geometric feedback. Our approach is distinguished by formulating reconstruction as an IoU-driven optimization over structured CAD programs and supporting a rich set of operations, including extrusions, revolutions, fillets, and chamfers. Experiments on multiple CAD benchmarks show that CADFit outperforms state-of-the-art mesh-to-CAD methods in volumetric Intersection-over-Union and Chamfer Distance, while substantially reducing the Invalid Ratio of reconstructed CAD programs, particularly for complex designs. We further present a multimodal pipeline that enables end-to-end reconstruction of CAD construction sequences from images by combining image-based geometry reconstruction with CADFit. By enabling accurate reconstruction of higher-complexity CAD models, CADFit provides a practical foundation for generating richer datasets and advancing future learning-based approaches to CAD reverse engineering. The code is available at: https://github.com/ghadinehme/CADFit.

UVTran: Accurate Hole-Filling Parameterization with Transformers

In industrial design, N-sided hole filling is typically formulated as the construction of a single trimmed B-spline surface by minimizing a fairness energy subject to geometric boundary constraints. This formulation requires an accurate parameter-space representation of the trimming curve on the filling surface. Most existing methods project the hole boundary onto a nearby plane or polygon to establish correspondence; however, they often neglect boundary heterogeneity, which can yield biased mappings, degrade fairness, and even cause filling failures. We propose UVTran, a transformer-based framework that predicts an auxiliary projection surface better to capture the geometric characteristics of the hole boundary. Exploiting B-spline locality, we design a cross-attention mechanism that biases each surface control point toward the nearby hole boundary, preserving local geometric detail. We voxelize control-point coordinates and formulate the fitting problem as a classification task, which reduces the model's sensitivity to small numerical perturbations and noise. We adopt a progressive-resolution training strategy that injects controlled discretization errors at coarse resolutions to mimic distribution shifts, thereby mitigating overfitting and improving generalization at high resolution. On our benchmark, UVTran outperforms both industrial and academic baselines: the tolerance-satisfaction rate improves by 12%12\%, and it consistently produces fair filled surfaces even under complex hole boundary conditions. These results suggest that UVTran yields more faithful correspondences and fairer trimmed surfaces across a wide range of N-sided holes.

Zero-to-CAD: Agentic Synthesis of Interpretable CAD Programs at Million-Scale Without Real Data

Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models are defined by their construction history: a parametric recipe that encodes design intent. However, existing large-scale 3D datasets predominantly consist of boundary representations (B-Reps) or meshes, stripping away this critical procedural information. To address this scarcity, we introduce Zero-to-CAD, a scalable framework for synthesizing executable CAD construction sequences. We frame synthesis as an agentic search problem: by embedding a large language model (LLM) within a feedback-driven CAD environment, our system iteratively generates, executes, and validates code using tools and documentation lookup to promote geometric validity and operation diversity. This agentic approach enables the synthesis of approximately one million executable, readable, editable CAD sequences, covering a rich vocabulary of operations beyond sketch-and-extrude workflows. We also release a curated subset of 100,000 high-quality models selected for geometric diversity. To demonstrate the dataset's utility, we fine-tune a vision-language model on our synthetic data to reconstruct editable CAD programs from multi-view images, outperforming strong baselines, including GPT-5.2, and effectively bootstrapping sequence generation capabilities without real construction-history training data. Zero-to-CAD bridges the gap between geometric scale and parametric interpretability, offering a vital resource for the next generation of CAD AI.

neuralCAD-Edit: An Expert Benchmark for Multimodal-Instructed 3D CAD Model Editing

We introduce neuralCAD-Edit, the first benchmark for editing 3D CAD models collected from expert CAD engineers. Instead of text conditioning as in prior works, we collect realistic CAD editing requests by capturing videos of professional designers, interacting directly with CAD models in CAD software, while talking, pointing and drawing. We recruited ten consenting designers to contribute to this contained study. We benchmark leading foundation models against human CAD experts carrying out edits, and find a large performance gap in both automatic metrics and human evaluations. Even the best foundation model (GPT 5.2) scores 53% lower (absolute) than CAD experts in human acceptance trials, demonstrating the challenge of neuralCAD-Edit. We hope neuralCAD-Edit will provide a solid foundation against which 3D CAD editing approaches and foundation models can be developed. Code/data: https://autodeskailab.github.io/neuralCAD-Edit

Agent-Aided Design for Dynamic CAD Models

In the past year, researchers have created agentic systems that can design real-world CAD-style objects in a training-free setting, a new variety of system that we call Agent-Aided Design. These systems place an agent in a feedback loop in which it generates an assembly of CAD model(s), visualizes the assembly, and then iteratively refines its assembly based on visual and other feedback. Despite rapid progress, a key problem remains: none of these systems can build complex 3D assemblies with moving parts. For example, no existing system can build a piston, a pendulum, or even a pair of scissors. In order for Agent-Aided Design to make a real impact in industrial manufacturing, we need a system that is capable of generating such 3D assemblies. In this paper we present a prototype of AADvark, an agentic system designed for this task. Unlike previous state-of-the-art systems, AADvark captures the dynamic part interactions with one or more degrees-of-freedom. This design decision allows AADvark to reason directly about assemblies with moving parts and can thereby achieve cross-cutting goals, including but not limited to mechanical movements. Unfortunately, current LLMs are imperfect spatial reasoners, a problem that AADvark addresses by incorporating external constraint solver tools with a specialized visual feedback mechanism. We demonstrate that, by modifying the agent's tools (FreeCAD and the assembly solver), we are able to create a strong verification signal which enables our system to build 3D assemblies with movable parts.

CADReasoner: Iterative Program Editing for CAD Reverse Engineering

Computer-Aided Design (CAD) powers modern engineering, yet producing high-quality parts still demands substantial expert effort. Many AI systems tackle CAD reverse engineering, but most are single-pass and miss fine geometric details. In contrast, human engineers compare the input shape with the reconstruction and iteratively modify the design based on remaining discrepancies. Agent-based methods mimic this loop with frozen VLMs, but weak 3D grounding of current foundation models limits reliability and efficiency. We introduce CADReasoner, a model trained to iteratively refine its prediction using geometric discrepancy between the input and the predicted shape. The model outputs a runnable CadQuery Python program whose rendered mesh is fed back at the next step. CADReasoner fuses multi-view renders and point clouds as complementary modalities. To bridge the realism gap, we propose a scan-simulation protocol applied during both training and evaluation. Across DeepCAD, Fusion 360, and MCB benchmarks, CADReasoner attains state-of-the-art results on clean and scan-sim tracks.

CADKnitter: Compositional CAD Generation from Text and Geometry Guidance

Computer-aided design (CAD) defines 3D models as compact, precise, and editable representations, making it directly useful for several fields. Recently, CAD generation has been gaining more attention in both the research community and industry. Crafting CAD models has long been a painstaking and time-intensive task, demanding both precision and expertise from designers. Prior works have achieved early success in single-part CAD generation, which is not well-suited for real-world applications, as multiple parts need to be assembled under semantic constraints and geometric compatibility. In this paper, we propose CADKnitter, a compositional CAD generation framework with geometric-guiding cues to steer diffusion sampling. CADKnitter is able to generate a complementary CAD part that follows both the geometric constraints of the given CAD model and the semantic constraints of the desired design text prompt. We also curate a dataset, so-called KnitCAD, containing over 310,000 samples of CAD models, along with textual prompts and assembly metadata that provide semantic and geometric constraints. Intensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art baselines by a clear margin. Our project page is available at https://cadknitter.github.io/.

HistCAD: Constraint-Aware Parametric CAD Histories for Evaluating Editability

Sketch constraints specify geometric conditions for constructing and modifying parametric CAD models. We study whether predicted constraints allow a given history to reproduce the required initial model and support prescribed dimensional edits. We introduce HistCAD, an executable representation and dataset whose Academic and Industrial collections contain 180,495 parametric construction histories with entity-referenced sketch constraints and retained feature operations. Predictors receive these histories with the geometry and feature definitions retained and explicit sketch constraints removed. They generate constraints for every sketch without seeing the edit request. The benchmark compares models built with alternative constraint sets for the same history under the same dimensional edit. An edit succeeds when the model reproduces the required initial geometry, reaches the target value, preserves specified relations and unedited dimensions in the target sketch, and rebuilds through the complete history. A predictor trained on both collections and supplied with descriptions of the input histories achieves overall edit success of 52.4% on Academic and 29.0% on Industrial. Models retaining only endpoint-connectivity constraints in the target sketch and the history's constraints elsewhere can reach the target and rebuild while failing preservation. For all-sketch predictions, we retain the target-sketch prediction and restore the history's constraints in other sketches. More models then reproduce the required initial geometry, and some of these newly matched models complete the edit. HistCAD connects constraint learning to the construction and revision of parametric CAD models.
