Reasoning Diversity
Overview
Reasoning diversity concerns whether AI systems can find meaningfully different ways to solve a problem, not merely express the same approach in different words. Researchers measure it with strategy annotations, semantic trace groupings, and coverage across multiple attempts, and use methods such as diversified reinforcement learning, mutual-information objectives, and diverse training-data selection. Search techniques that penalize revisiting explored approaches offer another way to broaden candidate solutions at inference time. A central tension is that methods that improve single-attempt accuracy can narrow coverage, while surface-level diversity metrics may not reflect genuine strategic breadth.
