Structural Health Monitoring
Overview
Structural Health Monitoring studies how to detect and characterize damage or deterioration in structures such as bridges, buildings, aircraft, rail systems, and wind turbines. It draws on vibration, strain, guided-wave, image, and point-cloud measurements, using signal processing and statistical models alongside machine learning methods such as convolutional networks, transformers, graph models, and physics-informed learning. These methods support tasks including anomaly detection, damage localization and severity assessment, displacement forecasting, and digital-twin or maintenance workflows. A central challenge is making reliable, calibrated models generalize across changing environments and structures when labeled field data are scarce, while remaining interpretable and efficient enough for safety-critical deployment.
