Orthogonal Hierarchical Decomposition for Structure-Aware Table Understanding with Large Language Models

Abstract

Complex tables with multi-level headers, merged cells and heterogeneous layouts pose persistent challenges for LLMs in both understanding and reasoning. Existing approaches typically rely on table linearization or normalized grid modeling. However, these representations struggle to explicitly capture hierarchical structures and cross-dimensional dependencies, which can lead to misalignment between structural semantics and textual representations for non-standard tables. To address this issue, we propose an Orthogonal Hierarchical Decomposition (OHD) framework that constructs structure-preserving input representations of complex tables for LLMs. OHD introduces an Orthogonal Tree Induction (OTI) method based on spatial--semantic co-constraints, which decomposes irregular tables into a column tree and a row tree to capture vertical and horizontal hierarchical dependencies, respectively. Building on this representation, we design a dual-pathway association protocol to symmetrically reconstruct semantic lineage of each cell, and incorporate an LLM as a semantic arbitrator to align multi-level semantic information. We evaluate OHD framework on two complex table question answering benchmarks, AITQA and HiTab. Experimental results show that OHD consistently outperforms existing representation paradigms across multiple evaluation metrics.

H2Table: Hierarchical Hypergraph-Enhanced Large Language Models for Complex Table Reasoning

Tables are ubiquitous across diverse domains, yet reasoning over them remains a significant challenge for modern large language models (LLMs). Current approaches typically linearize tables into sequences, inherently overlooking their intrinsic two-dimensional and hierarchical structure. To address this, we propose H2Table (Hierarchical Hypergraph-Enhanced Table Reasoning), a novel framework that represents complex tables as hierarchical nested hypergraphs. To process this representation, we design a tailored hypergraph encoder to facilitate message passing between hyperedges (headers) and nodes (cells), thereby perceiving the semantic entailment relationships between them within complex tables. Furthermore, we introduce a set of learnable query vectors acting as a lightweight bridge to extract representative structural embeddings from the encoder into the LLM. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach effectively handles complex table question answering tasks with hierarchical nested headers. Notably, on the HiTab dataset, H2Table achieves an average improvement of 22.88% over state-of-the-art baselines on highly complex tables with a nesting depth of four. DeepTable: Structural Attention Biases and Tree Path Encoding for Hierarchical Table Understanding

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated strong performance in table understanding. However, they typically process table content and headers as linearized token sequences. This representation weakens the two-dimensional and hierarchical structural relationships encoded by multi-level row and column headers. Existing parameter-efficient fine-tuning methods incorporate basic row and column information but do not explicitly capture the rich structural dependencies induced by hierarchical table headers. We propose DeepTable, a structure-aware approach for table understanding with LLMs. DeepTable comprises two complementary components. Structural Attention Bias (SAB) introduces learnable biases into the attention logits to explicitly represent whether pairs of table tokens share the same row or column. Tree Path Encoding (TPE) represents each table token using the ancestor paths of its row and column headers, preserving its position within the multi-level table structure. We integrate DeepTable with TableLoRA (He et al., 2025) to inject structural information into parameter-efficient adaptation. Across three LLM backbones, DeepTable consistently improves the corresponding TableLoRA baselines on three table question answering benchmarks, achieving average gains of 7.42 points on HiTab, 3.23 points on WikiTQ, and 2.01 BLEU points on FeTaQA. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed structural biases across different LLM backbones.

Tables Decoded: DELTA for Structure, TARQA for Understanding

Table understanding is a core task in document intelligence, encompassing two key subtasks: table reconstruction and table visual question answering (TabVQA). While recent approaches predominantly rely on vision- language models (VLMs) operating on table images, we propose a more scalable and effective alternative based on structured textual representations. These representations are easier to process, align more naturally with LLMs, and eliminate the need for language-specific visual encoders, making them particularly suitable for multilingual documents. We present DELTA, which separates physical structure recognition, logical structure recognition, and OCR to extract both layout and content accurately. DELTA outputs tables in Optimised Table Structure Language (OTSL), a compact and unified format that encodes cell arrangements and textual content. On table structure recognition (TSR), DELTA achieves TEDS- Structure scores comparable with state-of-the-art methods across FinTabNet, PubTabNet, and PubTables-1M. We further establish its robustness on non-English tables through our curated Hindi benchmark, TORQUE. Building on this, we introduce TARQA, an LLM fine-tuned on OTSL sequences. Our approach yields gains of 9.3 p.p. on WTQ (TabQA) and 9.2 p.p. on FinTabNetQA (TabVQA), respectively. On TORQUE, our method ranks second among all VLMs and DELTA + LLM variants.
