Abstract

Stereo depth estimation is fundamental to underwater robotic perception, yet suffers from severe domain shifts caused by wavelength-dependent light attenuation, scattering, and refraction. Recent approaches leverage monocular foundation models with GRU-based iterative refinement for underwater adaptation; however, the sequential gating and local convolutional kernels in GRUs necessitate multiple iterations for long-range disparity propagation, limiting performance in large-disparity and textureless underwater regions. In this paper, we propose StereoAdapter-2, which replaces the conventional ConvGRU updater with a novel ConvSS2D operator based on selective state space models. The proposed operator employs a four-directional scanning strategy that naturally aligns with epipolar geometry while capturing vertical structural consistency, enabling efficient long-range spatial propagation within a single update step at linear computational complexity. Furthermore, we construct UW-StereoDepth-80K, a large-scale synthetic underwater stereo dataset featuring diverse baselines, attenuation coefficients, and scattering parameters through a two-stage generative pipeline combining semantic-aware style transfer and geometry-consistent novel view synthesis. Combined with dynamic LoRA adaptation inherited from StereoAdapter, our framework achieves state-of-the-art zero-shot performance on underwater benchmarks with 17% improvement on TartanAir-UW and 7.2% improvment on SQUID, with real-world validation on the BlueROV2 platform demonstrates the robustness of our approach. AquaStereo: Enabling Underwater Stereo Matching via Depth-Conditioned Diffusion and Geometry Self-Distillation

Learning-based stereo matching models struggle in underwater environments due to scarce in-domain data and the difficulty of extracting discriminative correspondences from degraded imagery. In this work, we present AquaStereo\textbf{AquaStereo}, a perception-enhanced framework with a data simulation pipeline and a self-distillation strategy that jointly address data scarcity and feature degradation in underwater stereo matching. First, a depth-conditioned diffusion pipeline renders underwater stereo pairs while preserving binocular geometry, with a lightweight left-right consistency module ensuring geometric alignment. Training on this synthetic corpus effectively narrows the terrestrial-underwater gap and improves zero-shot robustness. Second, a frozen binocular teacher trained on clean terrestrial pairs guides a student exposed to rendered underwater pairs with perturbations. A stage-weighted sequence loss is performed to align the student's disparities with the teacher's geometry, while a clean-branch supervision with shared pseudo targets prevents scale drift. To further enhance feature stability under turbidity and low texture, we introduce learnable perception frames, a perception-enhanced feature formulation that constructs robust matching descriptors by fusing temporal cues from two auxiliary views encoded by a video backbone with semantic features extracted by a strong image encoder. Extensive experiments demonstrate that AquaStereo\textbf{AquaStereo} substantially improves robustness and zero-shot generalization in challenging underwater scenarios. SurfSLAM: Sim-to-Real Underwater Stereo Reconstruction For Real-Time SLAM

Localization and mapping are core perceptual capabilities for underwater robots. Stereo cameras provide a low-cost means of directly estimating metric depth to support these tasks. However, despite recent advances in stereo depth estimation on land, computing depth from image pairs in underwater scenes remains challenging. In underwater environments, images are degraded by light attenuation, visual artifacts, and dynamic lighting conditions. Furthermore, real-world underwater scenes frequently lack rich texture useful for stereo depth estimation and 3D reconstruction. As a result, stereo estimation networks trained on in-air data cannot transfer directly to the underwater domain. In addition, there is a lack of real-world underwater stereo datasets for supervised training of neural networks. Poor underwater depth estimation is compounded in stereo-based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithms, making it a fundamental challenge for underwater robot perception. To address these challenges, we propose a novel framework that enables sim-to-real training of underwater stereo disparity estimation networks using simulated data and self-supervised finetuning. We leverage our learned depth predictions to develop SurfSLAM, a novel framework for real-time underwater SLAM that fuses stereo cameras with IMU, barometric, and Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) measurements. Lastly, we collect a challenging real-world dataset of shipwreck surveys using an underwater robot. Our dataset features over 24,000 stereo pairs, along with high-quality, dense photogrammetry models and reference trajectories for evaluation. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate the advantages of the proposed training approach on real-world data for improving stereo estimation in the underwater domain and for enabling accurate trajectory estimation and 3D reconstruction of complex shipwreck sites.

LinStereo: Linear-Complexity Global Attention for Multi-Scale Iterative Stereo Matching

Existing Vision Foundation Model (VFM)-based iterative stereo pipelines under-exploit three information pathways: multi-scale backbone features are collapsed into single-level correlations, geometric priors remain untapped at initialization, and context propagates only locally. These gaps widen under degraded photometric cues, making underwater scenes a stringent generalization test. To address this, we propose LinStereo, built upon Depth Anything V3, whose core is a Position-Aware Linear Attention (PALA) module that replaces local recurrence with global aggregation at linear cost, propagating reliable estimates from well-matched regions into degraded areas while preserving disparity structure. PALA is made effective by two enabling components: Hierarchical Semantic Cost Volumes (HSCV), which supply scale-aligned correlations from the VFM feature hierarchy, and a Depth Prior Initialization (DPI) that converts monocular depth into a metrically calibrated warm start. LinStereo achieves state-of-the-art-level accuracy on standard benchmarks and strong cross-domain generalization, particularly on underwater scene where severe photometric degradation makes stereo matching particularly challenging, attaining the best overall accuracy with consistent gains 28% lower AbsRel on TartanAir-UW, 26% on SQUID, a real-world underwater dataset).
