QQ: A Language Metadata Toolkit for Multilingual NLP

Abstract

Multilingual NLP research increasingly involves hundreds or thousands of languages across different datasets. Managing, discovering, and reporting language metadata becomes a common hurdle at these scales. We present QQ, a metadata toolkit and browser explorer. QQ compiles language metadata sources into a graph of language varieties, scripts, regions, identifiers, names, and relations, and exposes it through a Python API, a command-line interface, and a browser-based explorer. Users can normalize identifiers, retrieve metadata, traverse relations, and discover which external resources contain a language. We demonstrate QQ on three workflows: an audit of the HuggingFace Hub, linking resources that use different identifier systems, and generating reproducible language-reporting tables. QQ supports FAIR-oriented metadata practices through versioning, open formats, and reusable interfaces.

MAPLE: Metadata Conditioned LLM Pretraining for Locale-Aware Question Answering

Large language models can memorize competing locale-specific facts yet fail to select among them when the locale changes, defaulting instead to a single globally dominant answer. We formalize this as localized knowledge disambiguation and introduce LocalNewsQA, an 18,700-item English-news benchmark that pairs the same question across two locales and scores whether a model actually switches its answer when the locale changes. We also introduce MAPLE, a controlled family of decoder-only models pretrained with document-level geographic metadata (source URL, country, and continent) already present in the training corpus, and compare it to metadata-free controls trained on identical data with the same token budget, architecture, and optimization. In controlled experiments at 1B and 3B, with inference-time metadata fixed, pretraining with metadata in MAPLE produces measurable switching and improves accuracy on questions whose correct answer depends on locale. Ablations and external-benchmark evaluations further suggest that locale-conditioned prediction benefits from geographic provenance learned during pretraining and that these benefits strengthen at larger model sizes.

Natural Language Access to Domain-Specific Metadata: A Reusable Framework for LLM Query Generation

Researchers need to answer ad-hoc questions about the contents of domain-specific archives but often lack the expertise to write structured queries on the metadata. We show that when domain vocabulary and semantics are captured in a well-designed Web Ontology Language (OWL) ontology, Large Language Models (LLMs) can generate accurate structured queries zero-shot, without task-specific fine-tuning, retrieval augmentation, or multi-agent orchestration. We present the Natural Language Knowledge Graph Query (NLKGQ) system, a framework and development process that enables natural language access to metadata in such archives. The framework includes a web interface that helps researchers pose natural language questions, which a domain-agnostic harness translates to SPARQL via an LLM and executes against a knowledge graph. The development process begins with capturing domain vocabulary and semantics in a formal OWL ontology. Domain-specific code then extracts metadata from archive sources and imports it into a knowledge graph defined by the ontology. Both are designed for reuse across domains. We demonstrate the system on metadata derived from a large-scale neuroimaging research archive, evaluating multiple LLMs and ontology representations. The best configurations achieve 100% accuracy on a 21-question competency and regression test set developed with domain experts. An ablation study across eight ontology representations reveals that readable entity names and semantic annotations are the dominant factors in accuracy, more significant than model choice or prompt engineering. We also compare SPARQL to an auto-generated SQL database as query backends, showing that OWL's structural features provide a substantial advantage over SQL DDL for LLM-driven query generation. Our demonstration domain requires local LLMs on modest institutional hardware to address privacy concerns for human subject data.

AtlasNLP: A Country-Aware Atlas of Dataset Representation in NLP

Understanding which countries are represented in NLP datasets is essential for identifying gaps, targeting data collection, measuring progress, and informing AI policy. However, geographic metadata is very rarely available, and country-level representation is often hidden behind broad language-level claims. We introduce AtlasNLP, a country-aware atlas of over 13,000 NLP dataset records across normalized NLP task categories, tracking both the populations represented and where datasets are produced. AtlasNLP includes AtlasNLP-Gold, a human-curated reference set, and AtlasNLP-Core, an ACL-derived large-scale collection. Using this resource, we show that (1) dataset coverage is highly uneven across countries and tasks; (2) dataset production and representation are geographically asymmetric; and (3) language coverage does not imply geographic representation. These findings reveal blind spots in current dataset documentation practices and motivate more explicit geographic metadata for country-aware NLP evaluation.
