Abstract

Robot manipulators operating in uncertain and non-convex environments present significant challenges for safe and optimal motion planning. Existing methods often struggle to provide efficient and formally certified collision risk guarantees, particularly when dealing with complex geometries and non-Gaussian uncertainties. This article proposes a novel risk-bounded motion planning framework to address this unmet need. Our approach integrates a rigid manipulator deep stochastic Koopman operator (RM-DeSKO) model to robustly predict the robot's state distribution under motion uncertainty. We then introduce an efficient, hierarchical verification method that combines parallelizable physics simulations with sum-of-squares (SOS) programming as a filter for fine-grained, formal certification of collision risk. This method is embedded within a Model Predictive Path Integral (MPPI) controller that uniquely utilizes binary collision information from SOS decomposition to improve its policy. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is validated on two typical robot manipulators through extensive simulations and real-world experiments, including a challenging human-robot collaboration scenario, demonstrating sim-to-real transfer of the learned model and its ability to generate safe and efficient trajectories in complex, uncertain settings.

Risk-Aware Kinodynamic Motion Planning Under Uncertainty For Safe Navigation on Planetary Environments

For autonomous space exploration, robotic agents need to perform motion planning in which environmental interactions may be unknown. Learning these interactions, such as terrain mechanics for wheeled robots, can introduce uncertainties that lead to risky motion plans and potentially hazardous operations or mission failures. Moreover, uncertainties induced by perception-based systems can exacerbate the problem of safe motion planning. In this letter, we address the problem of performing cost-optimal kinodynamic motion planning with risk awareness. We approach this in two steps. First, a sampling-based planner (AO-RRT) generates a dynamically feasible, risk-aware, and asymptotically cost-optimal trajectory. Second, we formulate motion planning as a nonlinear optimization problem and solve it using sequential convex programming (SCP), using the AO-RRT trajectory as an initial solution. By quantifying risk using conditional value-at-risk (CVaR), we demonstrate a reduction in risk by over ∼\sim97% across trajectories in simulation and hardware experiments.

ToMPC: Task-oriented Model Predictive Control via ADMM for Safe Robotic Manipulation

This paper proposes a task-oriented model predictive control (ToMPC) framework for safe and efficient robotic manipulation in open workspaces. The framework unifies collision-free motion and robot-environment interaction to address diverse scenarios. Additionally, it introduces task-oriented obstacle avoidance that leverages kinematic redundancy to enhance manipulation efficiency in obstructed environments. This complex optimization problem is solved by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), which decomposes the problem into two subproblems tackled by differential dynamic programming (DDP) and quadratic programming (QP), respectively. The effectiveness of this approach is validated in simulation and hardware experiments on a Franka Panda robotic manipulator. Results demonstrate that the framework can plan motion and/or force trajectories in real time, maximize the manipulation range while avoiding obstacles, and strictly adhere to safety-related hard constraints.

RoboNav-Arm: Agentic AI-Driven Navigation and Obstacle Avoidance for Robotic Manipulator in Cluttered Environments

Robotic manipulators operating in unstructured environments face significant challenges in safely executing goal-directed tasks due to dynamic and unforeseen obstacles, while traditional methods rely on prior knowledge or fixed perception pipelines, limiting adaptability. We propose a framework for safe task execution with effective obstacle avoidance. The environment module performs real-time obstacle detection, 3D localization, and ground surface geometry estimation. It then generates a structured semantic report that includes obstacle positions, object geometry and shape, and whether obstacles lie inside, outside, or within critical interaction zones. A central coordination module manages the overall system by handling tool invocation (e.g., memory and MoveIt collision scene updates), facilitating communication between modules, and continuously monitoring task progress until completion. Furthermore, a planning module selects an appropriate motion planning algorithm, such as RRTConnect, RRT*, or BiTRRT, based on the current environment configuration and goal requirements. The trajectory generated by the planner is further analyzed and refined to ensure safe and collision-free task execution. The proposed approach is evaluated in Gazebo Classic , demonstrating robustness in dynamic scenarios.
