Abstract

Recent advances in volumetric super-resolution (SR) have demonstrated strong performance in medical and scientific imaging, with transformer- and CNN-based approaches achieving impressive results even at extreme scaling factors. In this work, we show that much of this performance stems from training on downsampled data rather than real low-resolution scans. This reliance on downsampling is partly driven by the scarcity of paired high- and low-resolution 3D datasets. To address this, we introduce VoDaSuRe, a large-scale volumetric dataset containing paired high- and low-resolution scans. When training models on VoDaSuRe, we reveal a significant discrepancy: SR models trained on downsampled data produce substantially sharper predictions than those trained on real low-resolution scans, which smooth fine structures. Conversely, applying models trained on downsampled data to real scans preserves more structure but is inaccurate. Our findings suggest that current SR methods are overstated - when applied to real data, they do not recover structures lost in low-resolution scans and instead predict a smoothed average. We argue that progress in deep learning-based volumetric SR requires datasets with paired real scans of high complexity, such as VoDaSuRe. SCOPE-VSR: A Broad-Coverage Training Dataset for Video Super-Resolution

Open-domain video super-resolution (VSR) requires temporally coherent details across widely varying scenes and subjects. However, existing training datasets are often semantically imbalanced and insufficiently diverse. We address this data bottleneck with a structured curation pipeline for open-domain VSR, SCOPE. In this pipeline, we combine task-oriented video selection with hierarchical semantic rebalancing. Applying this pipeline to a large-scale collection of data sources, we construct the SCOPE-VSR dataset for training and SCOPE-test for testing. SCOPE-VSR has approximately 27k videos and provides balanced and diverse coverage of various real-world scenarios and subjects. We further develop GraCo-VSR, a novel framework for one-step video restoration. GraCo-VSR adopts a reliability-aware design with explicit supervision to reduce degradation-induced distortions in motion and texture guidance, allowing the model to benefit more effectively from the diverse training content in SCOPE-VSR. Evaluations show that our model achieves strong reconstruction fidelity and perceptual quality. Our code is available at: https://github.com/gyliao2768/SCOPE-VSR.

Real-World Blind Super-Resolution via Feature Matching with Implicit High-Resolution Priors

A key challenge of real-world image super-resolution (SR) is to recover the missing details in low-resolution (LR) images with complex unknown degradations (e.g., downsampling, noise and compression). Most previous works restore such missing details in the image space. To cope with the high diversity of natural images, they either rely on the unstable GANs that are difficult to train and prone to artifacts, or resort to explicit references from high-resolution (HR) images that are usually unavailable. In this work, we propose Feature Matching SR (FeMaSR), which restores realistic HR images in a much more compact feature space. Unlike image-space methods, our FeMaSR restores HR images by matching distorted LR image features to their distortion-free HR counterparts in our pretrained HR priors, and decoding the matched features to obtain realistic HR images. Specifically, our HR priors contain a discrete feature codebook and its associated decoder, which are pretrained on HR images with a Vector Quantized Generative Adversarial Network (VQGAN). Notably, we incorporate a novel semantic regularization in VQGAN to improve the quality of reconstructed images. For the feature matching, we first extract LR features with an LR encoder consisting of several Swin Transformer blocks and then follow a simple nearest neighbour strategy to match them with the pretrained codebook. In particular, we equip the LR encoder with residual shortcut connections to the decoder, which is critical to the optimization of feature matching loss and also helps to complement the possible feature matching errors. Experimental results show that our approach produces more realistic HR images than previous methods. Codes are released at https://github.com/chaofengc/FeMaSR.

MedGSSR: Generalizable Medical Image Super-Resolution 3D Reconstruction via Hierarchical Feed-forward Gaussian Splatting

High-resolution volumetric medical imaging is critical for clinical diagnosis, yet acquisition is often limited by scanner hardware, scan time, and for CT, radiation dose. Medical 3D Super-Resolution (Med3DSR) offers a computational alternative, but existing methods commonly rely on per-subject optimization, pretrained priors, or coordinate-based implicit representations, which compromise anatomical fidelity and limit efficiency. To address these limitations, we present MedGSSR, a fully end-to-end feed-forward framework that represents volumes as an explicit 3D Gaussian field for Med3DSR. Unlike coordinate-based implicit functions, our explicit 3D Gaussian representation naturally enhances signal continuity and local high-frequency fidelity. Specifically, MedGSSR explicitly decouples the reconstruction process into coarse-grained structural preservation and fine-grained textural refinement through the proposed Pyramid Anatomical Encoder and a Hierarchical Gaussian Projector. To support arbitrary-scale super-resolution, we introduce sub-voxel Gaussian decomposition and a Differentiable Gaussian Voxelizer that directly queries the continuous 3D intensity field, reducing discretization artifacts. Extensive experiments on MRI and CT benchmarks demonstrate that MedGSSR significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Notably, our framework exhibits robust generalizability across unseen datasets without requiring per-subject optimization, enabling fast inference and high-fidelity volumetric super-resolution in practical clinical settings.
