Abstract

Experienced storytellers decompose stories into local narrative strategies and how these strategies shape higher-level arcs. This decomposition helps writers recognize patterns in others' work and adapt those patterns to tell new stories. Novices, however, struggle to identify these strategies or to reuse them effectively. We present Narrix, a novel writing tool that helps novice writers recognize narrative strategies in example stories and repurpose these strategies in their own writing. Narrix analyzes strategies in example stories, highlights them with color-coded lexical cues and explanations, and situates them on an interactive story arc for exploration by emotional shifts and turning points. Writers then drag strategies onto multi-dimensional tracks and apply block-scoped edits to revise or continue their drafts through controlled generation steered by specified strategies. Through a within-subjects study (N=12), Narrix showed improved participants' retention, confidence, and creative adaptation of narrative strategies compared to a baseline chat-based writing interface.

NarrativeSteward: Coordinating Delegation, Guidance, and Verification in Agent-Assisted Interactive Narrative Authoring

Autonomous AI agents can turn authors' goals into interactive narratives by independently organizing and carrying out generation and revision. As agents generate and revise extensive content, authors struggle to grasp its overall structure, local details, and relationships, complicating continued guidance. We present NarrativeSteward, an authoring environment that organizes outlines, worldbuilding, and narrative graphs as linked artifacts for agent implementation and author guidance. Agent dialogue and project-wide structural review help authors understand the evolving work and guide local and cross-layer revisions, while change records and execution verification help authors assess the resulting work. Technical tests validated the system's change records, recovery mechanisms, and execution diagnostics. In a 12-participant within-subject study, NarrativeSteward supported easier formulation of revision requests and inspection of changes, and greater perceived understanding of changes and story structure, than general-purpose agents. Qualitative findings show how reviewing the work and feedback helps authors develop requirements and guide subsequent delegation. We open-source NarrativeSteward at https://github.com/Tencent/NarrativeSteward.

CraftAlign: Feature-Grounded Evaluation and Revision Guidance for AI Stories

Large language models can now generate fluent and complete stories, yet many outputs still feel formulaic and unnatural because of cliches, over-explanation, linear causal progression, and stereotyped endings, an immediately recognizable AI flavor. Existing detection and evaluation methods often stop at source labels or holistic scores, while revision methods typically target predefined issues through localized edits, limiting their ability to support multiple plausible revision strategies or guide story-wide changes in information release, causal organization, and ending treatment. We introduce CraftAlign, a framework that aligns AI stories with the craft of human storytelling by both assessing Human/AI writing patterns and providing revision guidance. CraftAlign comprises two learned modules and an inference-time guidance pipeline. A feature estimator built on Qwen3.5-9B predicts 304 explicit writing features spanning style and narrative. A class-conditional energy model scores the resulting feature configuration against Human and AI writing patterns, conditioning on the original writing prompt when available. At inference time, CraftAlign applies schema-valid structured perturbations, selects changes that move the feature configuration toward the Human writing pattern, and converts them into natural-language guidance for a separate editor to rewrite the full story. Experiments show that CraftAlign accurately distinguishes Human and AI writing patterns and that its guidance outperforms revision baselines across editors and in a human study.

Narrative Keyframing for Generative Creative Writing

We introduce narrative keyframing, an interaction technique for AI-assisted creative writing that lets writers specify different types of narrative constraints at selected moments in a story, then use AI to generate intervening prose. Inspired by the use of keyframing in animation, narrative keyframing offers a flexible way to connect story planning with adaptive control over generated text. We explore three types of keyframes: plot keyframes define significant events in a story, character keyframes represent how individual characters change over the narrative, and perspective keyframes capture how individual characters experience different events through first-person narratives. Plot and character keyframes offer a flexible way to adapt the type of high-level conditioning explored in previous AI writing tools to more customizable, iterative, and fine-scale control, while perspective keyframes add a new way to control characterization and focalization by using first-person narratives as an intermediary. Through a user study, we show that narrative keyframing supports a more controllable, transparent, and engaging way to use generative AI in creative writing.
