Abstract

Vision-language models (VLMs) have achieved strong performance in multimodal understanding and reasoning, yet grounded reasoning in 3D scenes remains underexplored. Effective 3D reasoning hinges on accurate grounding: to answer open-ended queries, a model must first identify query-relevant objects and regions in a complex scene, and then reason about their spatial and geometric relationships. Recent approaches have demonstrated strong potential for grounded 3D reasoning. However, they often rely on in-domain tuning or hand-crafted reasoning pipelines, which limit their flexibility and zero-shot generalization to novel environments. In this work, we present MAG-3D, a training-free multi-agent framework for grounded 3D reasoning with off-the-shelf VLMs. Instead of relying on task-specific training or fixed reasoning procedures, MAG-3D dynamically coordinates expert agents to address the key challenges of 3D reasoning. Specifically, we propose a planning agent that decomposes the task and orchestrates the overall reasoning process, a grounding agent that performs free-form 3D grounding and relevant frame retrieval from extensive 3D scene observations, and a coding agent that conducts flexible geometric reasoning and explicit verification through executable programs. This multi-agent collaborative design enables flexible training-free 3D grounded reasoning across diverse scenes and achieves state-of-the-art performance on challenging benchmarks.

Chat-Scene++: Exploiting Context-Rich Object Identification for 3D LLM

Recent advancements in multi-modal large language models (MLLMs) have shown strong potential for 3D scene understanding. However, existing methods struggle with fine-grained object grounding and contextual reasoning, limiting their ability to interpret and interact with complex 3D environments. In this paper, we present Chat-Scene++, an MLLM framework that represents 3D scenes as context-rich object sequences. By structuring scenes as sequences of objects with contextual semantics, Chat-Scene++ enables object-centric representation and interaction. It decomposes a 3D scene into object representations paired with identifier tokens, allowing LLMs to follow instructions across diverse 3D vision-language tasks. To capture inter-object relationships and global semantics, Chat-Scene++ extracts context-rich object features using large-scale pre-trained 3D scene-level and 2D image-level encoders, unlike the isolated per-object features in Chat-Scene. Its flexible object-centric design also supports grounded chain-of-thought (G-CoT) reasoning, enabling the model to distinguish objects at both category and spatial levels during multi-step inference. Without the need for additional task-specific heads or fine-tuning, Chat-Scene++ achieves state-of-the-art performance on five major 3D vision-language benchmarks: ScanRefer, Multi3DRefer, Scan2Cap, ScanQA, and SQA3D. These results highlight its effectiveness in scene comprehension, object grounding, and spatial reasoning. Additionally, without reconstructing 3D worlds through computationally expensive processes, we demonstrate its applicability to real-world scenarios using only 2D inputs.

Think, Act, Build: An Agentic Framework with Vision Language Models for Zero-Shot 3D Visual Grounding

3D Visual Grounding (3D-VG) aims to localize objects in 3D scenes via natural language descriptions. While recent advancements leveraging Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have explored zero-shot possibilities, they typically suffer from a static workflow relying on preprocessed 3D point clouds, essentially degrading grounding into proposal matching. To bypass this reliance, our core motivation is to decouple the task: leveraging 2D VLMs to resolve complex spatial semantics, while relying on deterministic multi-view geometry to instantiate the 3D structure. Driven by this insight, we propose "Think, Act, Build (TAB)", a dynamic agentic framework that reformulates 3D-VG tasks as a generative 2D-to-3D reconstruction paradigm operating directly on raw RGB-D streams. Specifically, guided by a specialized 3D-VG skill, our VLM agent dynamically invokes visual tools to track and reconstruct the target across 2D frames. Crucially, to overcome the multi-view coverage deficit caused by strict VLM semantic tracking, we introduce the Semantic-Anchored Geometric Expansion, a mechanism that first anchors the target in a reference video clip and then leverages multi-view geometry to propagate its spatial location across unobserved frames. This enables the agent to "Build" the target's 3D representation by aggregating these multi-view features via camera parameters, directly mapping 2D visual cues to 3D coordinates. Furthermore, to ensure rigorous assessment, we identify flaws such as reference ambiguity and category errors in existing benchmarks and manually refine the incorrect queries. Extensive experiments on ScanRefer and Nr3D demonstrate that our framework, relying entirely on open-source models, significantly outperforms previous zero-shot methods and even surpasses fully supervised baselines.

Agentic Collaborative Cognition for Zero-Shot 3D Understanding

Recent advancements have explored agentic zero-shot 3D understanding by reformulating it as video keyframe understanding with Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs). However, existing methods face an intrinsic bottleneck due to the finite observation perspectives inherent in videos and the implicit perception of 3D scenes. In this paper, we propose a collaborative multi-agent framework that assigns a Planning Agent to handle high-level viewpoint planning and supplement novel perspectives, and a Perception Agent to explicitly summarize the 3D scene into a structured holistic cognitive map. Specifically, Planning Agent first analyzes this cognitive map to determine query-relevant viewpoints and supplements missing critical perspectives to ensure comprehensive observation. Subsequently, Perception Agent documents object-level attributes from these views by assigning consistent instance identifiers across viewpoints, thereby integrating fragmented observations into the holistic cognitive map. In parallel, it provides feedback to filter out mismatched candidate objects and guide subsequent viewpoint planning. Through this closed-loop iterative process, two agents collaboratively figure out candidates until Perception Agent determines that sufficient information has been captured to complete the task. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on 6 benchmarks, with improvements of 11.1% [email protected] on ScanRefer, 14.6 BLEU-1 on 3D-assisted dialog, and 2.1 EM on SQA3D.
