Abstract

3D Gaussian representations have emerged as a powerful paradigm for digital head modeling, achieving photorealistic quality with real-time rendering. However, intuitive and interactive creation or editing of 3D Gaussian head models remains challenging. Although 2D sketches provide an ideal interaction modality for fast, intuitive conceptual design, they are sparse, depth-ambiguous, and lack high-frequency appearance cues, making it difficult to infer dense, geometrically consistent 3D Gaussian structures from strokes - especially under real-time constraints. To address these challenges, we propose SketchFaceGS, the first sketch-driven framework for real-time generation and editing of photorealistic 3D Gaussian head models from 2D sketches. Our method uses a feed-forward, coarse-to-fine architecture. A Transformer-based UV feature-prediction module first reconstructs a coarse but geometrically consistent UV feature map from the input sketch, and then a 3D UV feature enhancement module refines it with high-frequency, photorealistic detail to produce a high-fidelity 3D head. For editing, we introduce a UV Mask Fusion technique combined with a layer-by-layer feature-fusion strategy, enabling precise, real-time, free-viewpoint modifications. Extensive experiments show that SketchFaceGS outperforms existing methods in both generation fidelity and editing flexibility, producing high-quality, editable 3D heads from sketches in a single forward pass.

Edit3DGS: Unified Framework for Dynamic Head Editing via 2D Instruction-Guided Diffusion and 3D Gaussian Splatting

We present Edit3DGS, a unified framework for dynamic 3D head editing that integrates 2D instruction-guided diffusion with 3D Gaussian splatting. Unlike prior approaches that separately address frame-based edits or static 3D reconstruction, our method couples semantic controllability in the image domain with photorealistic, temporally consistent 3D representations. Given an input video, editable facial regions are masked and modified using a text-conditioned diffusion model to support fine-grained operations such as expression transformation, attribute modification, and appearance refinement. The edited frames are then aggregated through 3D Gaussian splatting to produce a coherent, high-fidelity avatar that preserves both identity and motion dynamics. To enforce consistency, Edit3DGS incorporates multi-view batch editing and lightweight inpainting strategies that recover lost expressions across timesteps. Experimental results demonstrate that our framework enables controllable, artifact-free head editing with smooth temporal transitions, offering practical applications in virtual avatars, immersive communication, film production, and interactive media.

COSY: Compositional 3DGS Synthesis for Disentangled Human Head Editing

Recent 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) GANs for human heads synthesize and render photorealistic 3D models in real-time and offer a vast variety in identity and appearance. However, controlling specific semantic attributes such as hair color or glasses remains challenging, as edits in the entangled latent space often induce unintended changes in identity or appearance. Although there are several methods that aim to disentangle the latent space post training by estimating directions that only modify certain features, these methods cannot guarantee complete disentanglement and often require pre-trained classifiers. In our approach, we propose a new generator architecture that synthesizes components, such as hair, skin, glasses, and torso, completely independently. This allows for changing the latent vector for one region while keeping the remaining parts fixed. Further, we achieve this separation using only sparse information such as the hair or skin color, eliminating the requirement of segmentation masks or geometric priors, often seen in prior work. To ensure matching shape and lighting conditions during editing, we allow minimal shared information via context tokens between the independent generators. These tokens even allow us to control the shape and light, without any prior annotation. Compared to existing works on GAN-based generation and editing, our method shows better disentanglement, more precise editing control, and competitive visual quality.

Generating 3D models from sketches of human faces using a combined approach of Convolutional Neural Networks, Procedural Modeling, and Contour Mapping

Generating 3D models from face sketches is an active topic of research in Computer Graphics due to its potential to tremendously facilitate the modeling of faces for both professional 3D arists and novices. Motivated by the observation that facial expressions are responsible for significantly altering and shaping the contours in our faces, we combine both expression detection and 3D model generation in our approach. The result is a novel approach to generating 3D models from sketches which relies on three components: Convolutional Neural Networks, a parametric 3D face model (Valley Girl), and Active Snake Contours. For the first time in the literature, CNNs are trained (using our own generated dataset) to detect the expression in the given sketch through detecting the active FACS Action Units. The expression is then duplicated on Valley Girl to obtain a 3D model with a similar expression. Active Snake Contours are then used to find the transforms needed to close the gaps between that model and the given sketch.
