Fourier Series Coder: A Novel Perspective on Angle Boundary Discontinuity Problem for Oriented Object Detection

Authors: Minghong WeiPu CaoZhihao ChenZhiyuan ZangLu YangQing Song

Abstract

With the rapid advancement of intelligent driving and remote sensing, oriented object detection has gained widespread attention. However, achieving high-precision performance is fundamentally constrained by the Angle Boundary Discontinuity (ABD) and Cyclic Ambiguity (CA) problems, which typically cause significant angle fluctuations near periodic boundaries. Although recent studies propose continuous angle coders to alleviate these issues, our theoretical and empirical analyses reveal that state-of-the-art methods still suffer from substantial cyclic errors. We attribute this instability to the structural noise amplification within their non-orthogonal decoding mechanisms. This mathematical vulnerability significantly exacerbates angular deviations, particularly for square-like objects. To resolve this fundamentally, we propose the Fourier Series Coder (FSC), a lightweight plug-and-play component that establishes a continuous, reversible, and mathematically robust angle encoding-decoding paradigm. By rigorously mapping angles onto a minimal orthogonal Fourier basis and explicitly enforcing a geometric manifold constraint, FSC effectively prevents feature modulus collapse. This structurally stabilized representation ensures highly robust phase unwrapping, intrinsically eliminating the need for heuristic truncations while achieving strict boundary continuity and superior noise immunity. Extensive experiments across three large-scale datasets demonstrate that FSC achieves highly competitive overall performance, yielding substantial improvements in high-precision detection. The code will be available at https://github.com/weiminghong/FSC.

FGAA-FPN: Foreground-Guided Angle-Aware Feature Pyramid Network for Oriented Object Detection

With the increasing availability of high-resolution remote sensing and aerial imagery, oriented object detection has become a key capability for geographic information updating, maritime surveillance, and disaster response. However, it remains challenging due to cluttered backgrounds, severe scale variation, and large orientation changes. Existing approaches largely improve performance through multi-scale feature fusion with feature pyramid networks or contextual modeling with attention, but they often lack explicit foreground modeling and do not leverage geometric orientation priors, which limits feature discriminability. To overcome these limitations, we propose FGAA-FPN, a Foreground-Guided Angle-Aware Feature Pyramid Network for oriented object detection. FGAA-FPN is built on a hierarchical functional decomposition that accounts for the distinct spatial resolution and semantic abstraction across pyramid levels, thereby strengthening multi-scale representations. Concretely, a Foreground-Guided Feature Modulation module learns foreground saliency under weak supervision to enhance object regions and suppress background interference in low-level features. In parallel, an Angle-Aware Multi-Head Attention module encodes relative orientation relationships to guide global interactions among high-level semantic features. Extensive experiments on DOTA v1.0 and DOTA v1.5 demonstrate that FGAA-FPN achieves state-of-the-art results, reaching 75.5% and 68.3% mAP, respectively.

FR-DETR: Frequency and Recurrent Feature Refinement for Robust Object Detection under Adverse Weather

Object detection under adverse weather remains challenging due to severe visual degradations and domain shifts. Existing enhancer-based approaches attempt to improve detection by cascading an enhancer with a detector, but they introduce redundant feature extraction and incur high computational cost with limited accuracy gains when paired with SOTA detectors. We propose FR-DETR, a detector-centric framework that refines features rather than images, focusing enhancement on regions of interest and leveraging frequency-domain cues. Specifically, we design (I) a Frequency Refinement Module that dynamically separates and reweights low- and high-frequency components to improve foreground-background discrimination, and (II) a Recurrent Focus Refinement Module (RFRM) that iteratively refines features using coarse predictions as guidance. Extensive experiments demonstrate that FR-DETR achieves superior detection accuracy under adverse weather while being significantly more computationally efficient than enhancer-based methods. Our implementation is available at https://github.com/ducnt1210/FR-DETR.

SphereSOD: Geometry-Structure Coupled Learning for 360 Salient Object Detection

360° salient object detection (SOD) aims to accurately segment salient regions across a full field of view. However, equirectangular projection (ERP) introduces severe spatial distortion when mapping the spherical domain onto a planar representation. Existing methods mainly focus on compensating projection distortion while overlooking the interaction between panoramic geometry and salient object structure during feature perception and prediction refinement. To this end, we propose SphereSOD, an ERP-native framework that couples panoramic geometry with evolving salient structures. Specifically, spherical geometry governs feature sampling and spatial weighting, while coarse-grained saliency and contour prediction influence context aggregation during the progressive decoding process. SphereSOD first initializes deformable sampling based on spherical projection geometry and then employs bounded, content-adaptive offsets, yielding features that are better aligned with the underlying panoramic geometry. Subsequently, the decoder performs structure-guided context aggregation and progressive refinement to recover complete salient regions and accurate boundaries. Extensive experiments on three public 360° SOD benchmarks demonstrate state-of-the-art performance and a favorable accuracy-efficiency trade-off, supporting structurepreserving inference directly in ERP space as a promising alternative to projection-heavy panoramic pipelines.
