SQuadGen: Generating Simple Quad Layouts via Chart Distance Fields

Authors: Youkang KongYang LiuYue DongXin TongHeung-Yeung Shum

Abstract

3D shapes from scanning, reconstruction, or AI-generated content often lack simple quad mesh layouts -- critical for efficient editing and modeling. Existing quad-remeshing techniques typically produce complex layouts with irregular loops, leading to tedious manual cleanup and extensive algorithm tuning. We introduce SQuadGen, a diffusion-based generative framework that leverages Chart Distance Fields (CDF) to synthesize simple quad layouts on 3D shapes. Our approach addresses two key challenges: (1) the discrete nature of mesh connectivity, which hinders learning, and (2) the scarcity of large-scale datasets with simple quad meshes. To overcome the first, we propose CDF, a continuous surface-based representation enabling effective learning and synthesis of quad layouts. To address the second, we define loop-aware simplicity metrics and construct a large-scale dataset of high-quality quad layouts recovered from public 3D repositories through a robust quad-recovery pipeline. Extensive evaluations across diverse 3D inputs show that SQuadGen consistently outperforms existing methods, producing robust, artist-friendly simple quad layouts.

Rethinking 3D Shape Generation: Diffusion over Superquadrics

Diffusion models have advanced 3D shape generation, yet most methods still denoise in high-cardinality spaces (e.g., voxel/SDF grids, meshes, or point clouds), which is computationally and memory intensive and makes it difficult to scale in terms of both higher resolution and stronger controllability. We rethink the diffusion representation and propose to move diffusion from dense geometry to compact geometric primitives, representing each shape as a small set of superquadrics. Instead of operating on thousands to millions of geometric representation values, we leverage 7KB superquadric parameters (pose, size, and shape), drastically reducing diffusion-state dimensionality and per-step compute/memory. Our diffusion-over-superquadrics improves scalability by supporting broader capabilities (e.g., resolution-free point-cloud decoding, part-level editing, and constraint-based design) and achieving competitive surface-fidelity and distributional performance on standard benchmarks after point-cloud decoding, while enabling efficient generation within 0.6s per shape for most conditions.

QuadLink: Autoregressive Quad-Dominant Mesh Generation via Point-Relation Learning

The generation of production-ready quad-dominant meshes is a cornerstone of modern 3D content creation. Generating anisotropic quad-dominant meshes from point clouds is challenging, as existing methods are typically limited to producing either pure triangular meshes or pure quadrilateral meshes with isotropic densities. In this paper, we present QuadLink, a unified framework consisting of three stages for quad-dominant mesh generation by linking points into structured faces. QuadLink formulates polygonal mesh generation as a hybrid centroid-conditioned vertex linking model: it first predicts a unified set of anchors (vertices and face centroids), then learns centroid-conditioned links that associate vertices with face centroids, and finally assembles polygonal faces with a quad-first strategy guided by robust geometric verification strategies. This link-based formulation enables efficient generation of sparse and anisotropic quad-dominant meshes with coherent edge flow and meanwhile supporting hybrid polygonal topology. To construct training data for this model, we further introduce a Tri-to-Quad Operator that converts artistic triangle meshes into quad-dominant training data via global merge selection. Extensive experiments show that QuadLink produces production-ready quad-dominant meshes from point clouds and achieves improved geometric fidelity and topological quality compared to prior baselines. Our method natively supports hybrid polygonal topology, generalizing to arbitrary n-gon meshes without architectural changes.

Repurposing 3D Generative Model for Autoregressive Layout Generation

We introduce LaviGen, a framework that repurposes 3D generative models for 3D layout generation. Unlike previous methods that infer object layouts from textual descriptions, LaviGen operates directly in the native 3D space, formulating layout generation as an autoregressive process that explicitly models geometric relations and physical constraints among objects, producing coherent and physically plausible 3D scenes. To further enhance this process, we propose an adapted 3D diffusion model that integrates scene, object, and instruction information and employs a dual-guidance self-rollout distillation mechanism to improve efficiency and spatial accuracy. Extensive experiments on the LayoutVLM benchmark show LaviGen achieves superior 3D layout generation performance, with 19% higher physical plausibility than the state of the art and 65% faster computation.
