Abstract

In this paper, we propose a dueling double deep Q-network (DDQN)-based adaptive multi-objective handover framework for low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks. The proposed method enables dynamic trade-off learning among throughput, blocking probability, and switching cost under time-varying network conditions. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach consistently outperforms conventional baselines, achieving up to 10.3% throughput improvement and near-zero blocking under typical operating conditions.

Spatial-Temporal Learning-Based Distributed Routing for Dynamic LEO Satellite Networks

In this paper, we propose a spatial-temporal learning-based distributed routing framework for dynamic Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite networks, where graph attention networks (GAT) and long short-term memory (LSTM) are integrated within a deep Q-network (DQN)-based architecture to enable distributed and adaptive routing decisions based on local observations. The routing problem is formulated as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) to address partial observability under dynamic topology and time-varying traffic. Simulation results show that the proposed method significantly outperforms conventional and learning-based routing schemes in terms of throughput, packet loss, queue length, and end-to-end delay, while achieving proactive congestion avoidance with up to 23.26% queue reduction. In addition, the proposed approach maintains low computational overhead with negligible carbon emissions, demonstrating its efficiency from a Green AI perspective.

STR-Agent: An LLM-Driven Agent for QoS-Aware Routing in LEO Satellite Networks

LEO satellite networks feature dynamic topologies, time-varying links, and diverse service requirements, which make conventional routing schemes difficult to support fine-grained quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning. Existing studies mainly optimize routing over network states with predefined objectives, but rarely address the practical challenge of translating unstructured natural-language service requests into adaptive routing decisions. To bridge this gap, we propose STR-Agent, an LLM-driven framework for QoS-aware routing in LEO satellite networks. The key innovation of STR-Agent lies in unifying intent perception, tool-based execution, experience accumulation, and reflection-based policy adaptation within a single agent architecture. Specifically, the Perception Module converts natural-language requests into structured routing semantics, while the Reflection Module dynamically adjusts the service-to-routing-policy mapping according to real-time congestion conditions and historical routing outcomes, rather than relying on a fixed routing objective. In addition, we develop a specialized perception model, and construct a domain-specific supervised fine-tuning dataset for LEO service understanding. Simulation results in a Walker-Delta constellation show that STR-Agent significantly outperforms conventional baselines: it reduces end-to-end delay by up to 60% compared with DQ-Dijkstra, improves average intent-understanding accuracy from 45.4% to 92.45% after supervised fine-tuning, and the Reflection Module further reduces the delay by 120 ms at 600 Mbps. These results demonstrate the potential of LLM-driven agent architectures to enable service-aware and adaptive QoS routing in future LEO satellite networks.

xApp Empowered Resource Management for Non-Terrestrial Users in 5G O-RAN Networks

This paper introduces a proactive Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) mobility management xApp for Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) Near Real-Time Radio Intelligent Controller (Near-RT RIC) environments, employing Double Deep Q-Network (DDQN) reinforcement learning (RL) enhanced with transfer learning to optimise handover decisions for UAVs operating along predetermined flight trajectories. Unlike reactive approaches that respond to signal degradation, the proposed framework anticipates network conditions and minimises both outage probability and handover frequency through predictive optimisation. The system leverages centralised weight averaging to consolidate knowledge from multiple flight scenarios into a global model capable of generalising to previously unseen operational environments without extensive retraining. A comprehensive evaluation demonstrates that the proposed framework achieves a favourable trade-off between handover frequency and connectivity reliability, reducing handover events by up to 54.6% compared to greedy approaches while maintaining outage probability at practically negligible levels. The results validate the effectiveness of intelligent learning-based approaches for UAV mobility management in next-generation O-RAN architectures, thereby contributing to seamless integration of aerial user equipment into cellular networks.
