Abstract

Facial rigging - creating FACS-based blendshapes together with inner-mouth geometry (teeth, gums, and tongue) - remains a major bottleneck in 3D character production. Existing pipelines still require substantial designer effort, especially for manual landmark annotation, per-character template adjustment, and inner-mouth placement. We present OmniFaceRig, a fully automatic end-to-end pipeline that converts a static surface-only 3D character mesh, with no pre-modeled oral cavity, into an inner-mouth-aware FACS rig with up to 155 blendshapes, procedurally fitted teeth, gums, and tongue, and re-packed UV/texture. OmniFaceRig supports diverse topologies - humans, humanoids, long-muzzled animals (e.g., dogs, wolves, foxes), and short-muzzled animals (e.g., cats, bears, rabbits, tigers) - with no manual landmarks, no user-provided templates, and no per-asset setup. The pipeline combines hybrid VLM+CV riggability checking, multi-model face parsing, dense keypoint-driven template registration, procedural inner-mouth construction, and collision-aware blendshape transfer. For non-human characters, OmniFaceRig selects topology-specific face and inner-mouth templates and uses collision-aware inner-mouth fitting to reduce teeth-face intersections without exposing users to category-specific tuning. We also publicly release Omni-Bench, a freely available benchmark dataset of 1,000 biped 3D characters with FACS facial blendshapes and inner-mouth geometry, spanning humans, humanoids, cats, dogs, and other animals. Experiments show high final rigging success on screened Omni-Bench inputs, nearly complete face detection recall from the segmentation ensemble and reliable inner-mouth placement with low penetration. Together, OmniFaceRig provides an automatic path from static generated characters to animation-ready facial rigs across both human and non-human topologies.

TopoRig: Topology-Agnostic Facial Rigging via Multi-Source Supervision

Automatic facial rigging across heterogeneous mesh topologies remains challenging because high-quality expression supervision is often tied to canonical templates, while deformation transfer to arbitrary meshes can introduce geometric artifacts and correspondence errors. We present TopoRig, a topology-agnostic facial rigging framework that predicts FACS-conditioned deformations directly on input mesh vertices while preserving the original topology. Starting from the ICT FaceKit expression model, we construct complementary supervision from accurate but template-biased common-topology rigs, topology-diverse but noisier transferred rigs, and targeted image-based cues for controls poorly captured by geometric transfer. TopoRig combines local surface geometry, landmark-relative semantic features, global shape context, and FACS controls to predict per-vertex displacements. We train on 3,496 generated identities using 45 non-gaze expression controls from the 53-control ICT FaceKit vocabulary. On held-out identities and unseen mesh topologies, TopoRig more faithfully reproduces the reference expression space than prior neural facial-rigging methods, while qualitative results show consistent localized deformations across diverse character geometries. Ablations demonstrate that semantic landmark features and complementary supervision improve cross-identity and cross-topology generalization. Overall, TopoRig amortizes heterogeneous and imperfect expression supervision into a single topology-preserving deformation model.

RegHead: Non-Humanoid Head Blendshapes via Feed-Forward Registration

We present RegHead, a framework for constructing semantic blendshape sets for animatable non-humanoid head avatars. With a fixed expression vocabulary, semantic blendshapes provide a low-dimensional and interpretable animation interface and support cross-identity retargeting. Building such blendshape sets remains expensive because (i) expression-consistent supervision is scarce, (ii) generated 4D assets typically lack correspondence, and (iii) facial motion is highly localized. We propose (1) a large-scale dataset of non-humanoid identities paired with a shared expression vocabulary, obtained by expanding a small artist-rigged library via fine-tuned image editing; (2) a dense stochastic anchor motion representation tailored to localized facial deformations; and (3) a fast feed-forward registration model that converts unregistered expression meshes into a corresponded blendshape basis by predicting anchor-based deformations from the neutral shape. Experiments show that our approach produces higher-fidelity expression meshes than baselines, while running orders of magnitude faster than optimization. We further demonstrate real-time retargeting from human face tracking signals to non-humanoid characters, capturing both head pose and localized facial motions. Rigel3D: Rig-aware Latents for Animation-Ready 3D Asset Generation

Recent 3D generative models can synthesize high-quality assets, but their outputs are typically static: they lack the skeletal rigs, joint hierarchies, and skinning weights required for animation. This limits their use in games, film, simulation, virtual agents, and embodied AI, where assets must not only look plausible but also move plausibly. We introduce Rigel3D, a generative method for animation-ready 3D assets represented as rigged meshes. Unlike post-hoc auto-rigging methods that attach rigs to completed shapes, our method jointly models geometry and rig structure through coupled surface and skeleton structured latent representations. A rig-aware autoencoder decodes these representations into mesh geometry, skeleton topology, joint coordinates, and skinning weights, while a two-stage latent generative model synthesizes both surface and skeleton representations for image-conditioned generation. To support downstream animation workflows, we further introduce an open-vocabulary joint labeling module that embeds generated joints into a shared vision-language space, enabling correspondence to arbitrary retargeting templates. Experiments on large-scale rigged asset datasets demonstrate that our method generates diverse, high-quality animation-ready assets and outperforms existing rigging baselines across multiple metrics.
