LLM-Based Multi-Reference Evaluation for Efficient and Robust Assessment of Phrase Break Annotations

Abstract

Reliable evaluation of phrase break annotations is crucial, as subtle variations in prosodic boundaries directly affect the clarity and naturalness of speech. However, existing approaches exhibit major limitations: single-reference evaluation assumes a unique gold phrasing for an utterance despite multiple valid phrasings, while human judgment, though flexible, is labor-intensive and unscalable. To address these, we propose LLM-based Multi-Reference Evaluation (LMRE) for phrase break annotations that models the one-to-many nature of prosodic phrasing and generates multiple valid phrasings from minimal demonstrations. On a Korean testbed of 1,356 annotations covering five strategies, LMRE shows stronger alignment with human judgment than single-reference evaluation in both acceptance behavior and score correlation. Our findings demonstrate that LMRE effectively achieves both scalability and multi-reference support, highlighting the potential of LLMs for evaluation in the speech domain.

A Finetuned SpeechLLM for Joint Multi-Granular L2 Assessment and Natural-Language Rationales

Automated L2 speech assessment can assign proficiency labels, but often lacks interpretability. We propose a rubric-guided SpeechLLM for multi-aspect, multi-granular assessment, trained with a hybrid objective combining supervised fine-tuning and Bounded Direct Preference Optimization. The model jointly predicts ordinal labels at the sentence-level (accuracy, fluency, prosody), word/phoneme-level accuracy, and generates a natural-language rationale in the same response. On SpeechOcean762, our approach matches or outperforms single-granularity models while remaining competitive with prior approaches. We analyze rationale reliability along two axes: self-consistency with model predictions and alignment with ground-truth labels, using sentiment consistency (plausibility) and mention-based agreement (faithfulness). Rationales are plausible at the sentence level, but faithfulness degrades at the word/phoneme level: references are sparse and weakly aligned with token-level labels.

SpeechAnnotator: A Context-Aware Multi-Agent Framework and Benchmark for Multidimensional Speech Annotation

Recent controllable speech generation requires training data with fine-grained annotations of speaker traits, prosody, emotion, paralinguistic cues, acoustic scenes, and context. Existing workflows often rely on manual correction, paid hosted multimodal services, or fixed processing chains, which limits large-scale data processing through annotation cost, external-service dependence, or weak cross-stage recovery. We introduce SpeechAnnotator, a locally deployable, context-aware multi-agent framework built entirely from open-source models and tools. Supporting frontend modules first obtain speaker-aware segments and final segment transcripts, while prior evidence extractors attach heterogeneous segment-level cues. Three specialist agents then collaborate through shared state: the Planning Agent converts local audio evidence, speaker history, neighboring segments, and recording-level context into field-specific contracts; the Labeling Agent performs contract-guided multimodal prediction for directly observable attributes; and the Review Agent runs a bounded review loop that checks evidence support and cross-segment consistency, triggering relabeling only for unsupported or inconsistent fields. To address the fragmentation of existing evaluation resources across isolated tasks and narrow-domain test sets, we introduce SpeechAnnotator-Bench (SA-Bench), containing 8.87 hours of human-annotated audio across nine source formats, together with SpeechAnnotator-Eval (SA-Eval), which separates Timeline-Eval for speaker-aware timeline recovery, Closed-Eval for finite-set attributes, and Open-Eval for open-ended attributes. Experiments and ablations show that SpeechAnnotator provides a locally deployable alternative to commercial audio-capable systems, while the bounded review loop improves multidimensional annotation through evidence- and context-aware field-level recovery.

WhoSaidIt: Human-LLM Collaborative Annotation for Text-Based Multilingual Speaker-Attribute Classification

Annotating speaker attributes from text is inherently ambiguous, particularly in multilingual settings where demographic and social cues are implicit and culturally variable. We propose a human-large language model (LLM) collaborative re-annotation framework for stabilizing multilingual speaker-attribute labels under practical resource constraints. Starting from a noisy corpus, we use LLMs to surface recurring annotation rationales through iterative interaction with experts, and apply disagreement-focused sampling for targeted re-annotation. Using this framework, we construct WhoSaidIt, a multilingual dataset covering nine speaker-attribute labels. We quantify divergence between original and revised annotations, benchmark recent LLMs, and analyze the effect of explicit rationales on model behavior. Our results reveal substantial cross-lingual differences in annotation decisions and demonstrate both the strengths and limitations of LLMs in speaker-attribute classification.
