Abstract

This study investigates silence gaps in two kinds of audiovisual material. We analysed thirty US situational comedies and fifty-one synthetic podcasts generated with Google NotebookLM. Gaps were compared across speaker gender, assigned from a fundamental-frequency threshold estimated in Praat, and across production settings.

ParaPairAudioBench: Paralinguistic Pairwise Audio Benchmark for LALM-as-a-Judge

Large Audio-Language Models (LALMs) have been widely used as judge models for the automatic evaluation of generated speech. However, prior approaches predominantly focus on holistic naturalness, leaving fine-grained paralinguistic distinctions underexplored. We introduce ParaPairAudioBench, a pairwise benchmark of 5,175 audio pairs across five paralinguistic dimensions: Style, Rate, Emphasis, Age, and Gender. Our experiments show that current LALM judges still lag behind human judgments by 32%p on average and exhibit severe calibration failures, particularly in Tie cases where the correct decision is to abstain. To further analyze lexical versus acoustic reliance, the benchmark includes both same-transcript and cross-transcript conditions. ParaPairAudioBench enables multi-dimensional, calibration-aware assessment of the reliability of LALM-as-a-Judge for paralinguistic speech evaluation.

Low-Latency Real-Time Audio Game Commentary System via LLM-Based Parallel Text Generation

We present a low-latency real-time audio game commentary system that generates spoken commentary directly from live gameplay video. In this end-to-end setting, a key bottleneck is accumulated waiting time; conventional pipelines capture frames, generate text, and synthesize speech sequentially for each utterance, and do not request the next generation until speech playback has completed. This strict sequentiality causes long and unnatural silence between utterances. To address this latency bottleneck, our system runs text generation in parallel with speech playback and buffers multiple candidate utterances ahead of time, enabling immediate synthesis at playback boundaries. Experiments on fast-paced game videos show that our parallel design reduces the mean inter-utterance silence from 9.6 seconds to 0.3 seconds compared to sequential baselines. It also improves similarity to professional speaking--silence timing patterns by over 40 %, and a user study with 120 experienced game players confirms significantly improved perceived speaking rhythm. All That Glitters Is Not Audio: Rethinking Text Priors and Audio Reliance in Audio-Language Evaluation

Large Audio-Language Models show consistent performance gains across speech and audio benchmarks, yet high scores may not reflect true auditory perception. If a model can answer questions without processing the acoustic signal, the benchmark fails as a measure of auditory understanding. We present a diagnostic framework using two axes: text prior, which measures answerability from text and general knowledge alone, and audio reliance, which assesses actual dependency on the acoustic signal. Evaluating eight LALMs across three benchmarks, we find that models retain 60-72% of their full audio scores even without any audio input. Moreover, among items that require audio, only 3.0-4.2% need the complete audio clip; the majority can be resolved using localized fragments. These findings challenge the assumption that benchmark performance equals robust audio understanding, and we conclude with practical guidelines for improving evaluation reliability and benchmark design.
