Abstract

In this work, we address diacritic restoration for Arabic speech transcripts. Most speech data are undiacritized, limiting the ability of modeling fine-grained phonological distinctions. The speech modality has recently been explored as a way to complement text-based diacritic restoration efforts. We propose an efficient non-autoregressive approach for speech-to-text diacritization based on Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC). Our method incorporates hard constraints during decoding by constructing a character-level diacritization lattice from an undiacritized transcript and restricting hypotheses to valid diacritized realizations. We evaluate on Classical Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic test sets (namely, ArVoice and ClArTTS) against a more computationally-complex multi-modal diacritic restoration baseline, and show statistically significant reductions in diacritic error rates in both, demonstrating that the proposed approach offers both performance and efficiency gains.

Thaka at KSAA-2026 Task 2: Regularized Fine-Tuning for Arabic Speech Diacritization

We describe the winning system for Task 2 of the KSAA-2026 Shared Task on Arabic Speech Dictation with Automatic Diacritization. The task requires producing fully diacritized Arabic text from speech audio and undiacritized transcripts, with only 2,327 training samples available and no external data permitted. Our system fine-tunes CATT-Whisper, a character-level multimodal model combining a pretrained CATT text encoder with a frozen Whisper speech encoder. The key to our approach is training regularization: R-Drop consistency regularization, Optuna-optimized hyperparameters with high weight decay, and Focal Loss. At inference, we average 200 stochastic forward passes across four model checkpoints using Monte Carlo Dropout at the softmax probability level. The system achieves 23.26% WER on the primary leaderboard metric (with case endings, including no-diacritic positions), placing 1st among all participants.

Koshur Diacritizer: A Byte-Level Sequence-to-Sequence Model for Kashmiri Diacritic Restoration

Kashmiri, an Indo-Aryan language written in a modified Perso-Arabic script, frequently omits diacritic marks in digital text, creating ambiguity and challenging downstream NLP applications. We present Koshur Diacritizer, a ByT5-small byte-level sequence-to-sequence model for restoring diacritics in Kashmiri text. To support this task, we release a publicly available dataset of 23.7k aligned undiacritized diacritized Kashmiri sentence pairs. The proposed framework combines script-aware normalization, alignment validation, and skeleton-preserving inference to ensure reliable restoration while maintaining the original base-letter sequence. Experimental results on a held-out test set achieve a DERm of 0.2012 and a WER of 0.2159. Additionally, evaluation by a native Kashmiri linguistic expert yields a mean accuracy of 77.5%. The dataset, model, and source code are publicly released to provide a reproducible baseline for Kashmiri diacritic restoration and future low-resource language research.

Beyond Acoustic Sparsity and Linguistic Bias: A Prompt-Free Paradigm for Mispronunciation Detection and Diagnosis

Mispronunciation Detection and Diagnosis (MDD) requires modeling fine-grained acoustic deviations. However, current ASR-derived MDD systems often face inherent limitations. In particular, CTC-based models favor sequence-level alignments that neglect transient mispronunciation cues, while explicit canonical priors bias predictions toward intended targets. To address these bottlenecks, we propose a prompt-free framework decoupling acoustic fidelity from canonical guidance. First, we introduce CROTTC, an acoustic model enforcing monotonic, frame-level alignment to accurately capture pronunciation deviations. Second, we implicitly inject mispronunciation information via the IF strategy under the knowledge transfer principle. Experiments show CROTTC-IF achieves a 71.77% F1-score on L2-ARCTIC and 71.70% F1-score on the Iqra'Eval2 leaderboard. With empirical analysis, we demonstrate that decoupling acoustics from explicit priors provides highly robust MDD.
