Abstract

GUI grounding maps natural-language instructions to click locations and is essential for reliable GUI agents. The task remains difficult on high-resolution, densely populated interfaces because a vision-language model (VLM) may recognize a requested control without locating it precisely enough for interaction. Most existing methods provide various forms of localization assistance, but still rely on a direct click prediction, allowing visual ambiguity or an inaccurate initial estimate to propagate to the final result. In this paper, we introduce GUI-Lens, a coarse-to-fine grounding framework that allows a general-purpose VLM to determine the target through active visual observations. Specifically, GUI-Lens extracts OCR text and detected UI components from the screenshot and presents their positions as coordinate references. Using the instruction, the current view, and these references, the VLM selects the region and scale of the next view, which is cropped and enlarged to provide finer visual details. This process continues over successively focused views until the target is determined. Proposed crops and clicks are checked against the instruction throughout the process, and the final local position is mapped back to the original screen coordinates. Experiments on four GUI grounding benchmarks and three general-purpose VLM backends show that GUI-Lens improves overall grounding accuracy by up to 24.9 percentage points and achieves state-of-the-art performance with GPT-5.5.

GUI-AIMA: Aligning Intrinsic Multimodal Attention with a Context Anchor for GUI Grounding

Graphical user interface (GUI) grounding is a key capability for computer-use agents, mapping natural-language instructions to actionable regions on the screen. Existing Multimodal Large Language Model (MLLM) approaches typically formulate GUI grounding as a text-based coordinate generation task. However, directly generating precise coordinates from visual inputs is challenging and often data-intensive. A more intuitive strategy is to first identify instruction-relevant visual patches and then determine the exact click location within them. Motivated by recent observations that general MLLMs exhibit native grounding ability embedded in their attention maps, we propose GUI-AIMA, an attention-based and coordinate-free supervised fine-tuning framework for efficient GUI grounding. GUI-AIMA aligns the intrinsic multimodal attention of MLLMs with patch-wise grounding signals. These signals are calculated adaptively for diverse user instructions by multi-head aggregation on simplified query-visual attention matrices. Besides, its coordinate-free manner can easily integrate a plug-and-play zoom-in stage. GUI-AIMA-3B was trained with only 509k samples (around 101k screenshots), demonstrating exceptional data efficiency and verifying that light training can trigger the native grounding capability of MLLMs. It achieves state-of-the-art performance among 3B models, attaining an average accuracy of 61.5% on ScreenSpot-Pro, 92.1% on ScreenSpot-v2, 68.1% on OSWorld-G, 79.1% on MMBench-GUI-L2, and 60.0% on UI-Vision. RankGround: Efficient High-Resolution GUI Grounding via Lightweight Reranker-Guided Crop Selection

Graphical User Interface (GUI) grounding is a fundamental perception task for multimodal agents, enabling them to interpret natural language instructions and interact with digital interfaces. Existing methods face a fundamental trade-off between accuracy and efficiency: direct full-image inference often fails to capture small or visually similar UI elements, while multi-crop strategies improve localization at the cost of multiple expensive Vision-Language Model (VLM) calls per query. To address this challenge, we propose RankGround, a two-stage framework that achieves accurate GUI grounding with a single VLM call per query. Central to our approach is GroundRanker, a lightweight multimodal reranker that identifies the most promising crop from a dense candidate set. Because no off-the-shelf ranking dataset is available, we construct ranking supervision data from existing grounding datasets. A strict containment criterion and boundary-aware positive augmentation improve alignment and spatial coverage in cluttered layouts. GroundRanker is then trained with a two-stage curriculum: a pointwise objective first learns coarse containment, and a listwise objective refines subtle semantic and spatial distinctions among visually similar crops. Experimental results show that RankGround consistently outperforms strong baselines while reducing computational cost. It achieves 1.4 times faster inference and improves localization accuracy by 5.5% on average over the second-best method across all backbones and screen scales, establishing a new state of the art in both efficiency and precision for GUI grounding.

Hallucination-Free GUI Grounding via Regression-Free Layout-Aware Matching

GUI agents are shifting from metadata-dependent large language models to purely visual multimodal large language models (MLLMs) that operate directly on screenshots. The core task, GUI grounding, requires translating abstract user instructions into precise element coordinates. This task faces a persistent dual obstacle: conventional grounding models lack the semantic richness to interpret abstract instructions, while end-to-end MLLMs suffer from coordinate hallucinations caused by deficient fine-grained perception. We propose a regression-free framework where a frozen MLLM performs instruction parsing and a dedicated grounding model handles precise localization without learning any coordinate regression. A frozen MLLM first elaborates the abstract instruction into a structured visual description rich in layout cues. These descriptions are then fed to a novel Layout-Aware GUI Grounding Model, which performs regression-free localization by matching against layout-prior candidates, inherently suppressing hallucinations and avoiding expensive fine-tuning. The grounding model is trained with only Text/Icon binary labels, requiring no coordinate regression parameters. On ScreenSpot-Pro, our method achieves over 20% improvement in grounding accuracy over end-to-end systems; on Mind2Web, it raises success rate and element selection rate by more than 15%. These results demonstrate that decoupling instruction understanding from layout-aware localization effectively resolves the core challenges of GUI interaction.
