RA-CAD: Learning Post-Execution Critique for State-Aware Text-to-CAD Generation

Authors: Shuhao YanChanghao HeXi PengPeng Hu

Abstract

Text-to-CAD generation translates natural-language design intent into editable and executable parametric computer-aided design (CAD) codes, reducing the expertise and effort required for manual modeling. Existing methods incorporate fixed, externally supplied, prompt-induced, or separately optimized critique mechanisms to optimize the generation process, but they do not necessarily optimize how feedback is interpreted and translated into effective corrective actions throughout the generation process. To bridge this feedback-utilization gap, we present RA-CAD (ReAct Agent for CAD), a state-aware agent that interacts with the CAD environment through a Generate--Execute--Critique--Rewrite loop. At each iteration, RA-CAD executes the current code and observes its outcome. Conditioned on the design instruction, current code, and execution feedback, the agent then generates an explicit post-execution critique as an intermediate policy action. This critique either validates the current result for termination or provides revision-oriented guidance that conditions the next rewrite. CAD Code Bootstrapping (CCB) first establishes fundamental parametric CAD coding capabilities through supervised fine-tuning. Feedback-Driven Agent Optimization (FAO) subsequently applies trajectory-level Group Relative Policy Optimization to both policy-generated code and critique sequences, assigning terminal F1 and Chamfer Distance rewards to the complete interaction trajectory. This formulation makes critique an outcome-aligned, learnable policy decision rather than an unoptimized auxiliary output. Experiments on CADFusion and Text2CAD show that RA-CAD achieves state-of-the-art execution validity and geometric quality compared with existing methods and strong proprietary language models, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed state-aware text-to-CAD agent.

ArtisanCAD: An Industrial-Level CAD Agent with Expert-Grounded Knowledge Distillation

Computer-aided design (CAD) for industrial components requires long-horizon procedural modeling, robust feature dependencies, editable parametric geometry, and production-grade B-Rep execution. Existing text-to-CAD methods have made promising progress in generating CAD programs from natural-language descriptions, but they still struggle when user prompts are ambiguous, underspecified, or only describe high-level design intent. They also rarely exploit expert procedural knowledge naturally available in industrial workflows, such as CATIA operation recordings, macro logs, drawing notes, and engineering descriptions. We present ArtisanCAD, a skill-guided industrial CAD agent with expert-grounded knowledge distillation. The core of ArtisanCAD is CAD intermediate representation (CAD-IR), an executable procedural representation that encodes parameters, ordered operations, MCP tool bindings, dependencies, generated entities, and verification rules. CAD-IR plays two key roles: it first serves as the carrier for distilling expert CAD procedures into reusable parameterized skills; then it provides a procedural scaffold that turns vague or intermediate-level prompts into complete executable CAD operations. ArtisanCAD retrieves expert-derived skills, instantiates and revises CAD-IR, executes the resulting procedure through a dedicated CATIA-MCP backend, and uses multi-view visual feedback for iterative refinement, and finally generates production-ready B-Rep models. On the Text2CAD benchmark, CAD-IR improves generation from intermediate prompts by reducing mean Chamfer Distance from 14.8314.83 to 9.889.88, showing its ability to bridge ambiguous textual intent and executable CAD construction. On four complex automotive components, CAD-IR enables expert CATIA recordings to be distilled into reusable skills, allowing ArtisanCAD to generate editable CATIA-native B-Rep models for new variant requests.

Text-to-CAD Evaluation with CADTests

Text-to-CAD has recently emerged as an important task with the potential to substantially accelerate design workflows. Despite its significance, there has been surprisingly little work on Text-to-CAD evaluation, and assessing CAD model generation performance remains a considerable challenge. In this work, we introduce a new evaluation perspective for Text-to-CAD based on automated testing. We propose CADTestBench, the first test-based benchmark for Text-to-CAD, based on CADTests, executable software tests that verify whether a generated CAD model satisfies the geometric and topological requirements of the input prompt. Using CADTestBench, we conduct comprehensive benchmarking of recent Text-to-CAD methods and further demonstrate that CADTests can also guide CAD model generation, yielding simple baselines that surpass performance of current methods. CADTestBench code and data are available at GitHub and Hugging Face dataset.

HierCAD: Hierarchical Text-to-CAD Design via Structure Alignment and Parameter Grounding

Recent text-to-CAD approaches have shown promising results by leveraging large language models, but they often struggle with maintaining structural consistency in complex designs and accurately grounding geometric parameters. To address these issues, we propose HierCAD, a hierarchical text-to-CAD framework that improves both structural reasoning and parameter prediction. HierCAD reformulates CAD generation as progressive reasoning by decomposing CAD construction trees into object-level procedural reasoning and part-level topology reasoning trajectories. To further improve generation fidelity, we introduce a unified Structure Alignment and Parameter Grounding (SAPG) learning strategy. Structure alignment aligns topology reasoning trajectories with their corresponding parametric CAD spans, while parameter grounding mitigates shortcut learning through structure-preserving parameter perturbations and ranking-based supervision. Experiments demonstrate that HierCAD outperforms prior state-of-the-art methods on both CAD sequence generation and reconstructed CAD model evaluation.
